Oh to be younger! My body is bit too achy to sleep on the ground now. But doesn’t stop me cycling or camping with a massive air bed. Another superb video.
Your channel has been popping up for a while and I've avoided it because I knew as soon as I watched it I would need to quit my job, move back to Japan, and hit the road for some more touring. From Amami Oshima to Hokkaido and everything in between, it's such an amazing country to ride!
I do a lot of stealthy camping in Kansai. I've woken up in some pretty precarious situations! Yeah, when you set up camp at night, it can be difficult to know what's going to be going on when the sun comes up. Good for a laugh later on in the day, though. Eh? After the shock/embarrassment wears off... lol
Keep up the great work! I do 2-day and 3-day tours 3 or 4 times per year. I just stay at B&B's. I don't need all this expensive gear, and this allows me to travel ultra-light. I also enjoy the hot shower and the dry room. I understand this would not be for the purist. I have done long-distance touring in the past with a 5-month trip being the longest and carried all the gear on the bike.
Last year my first serious bikepacking trip, I had my clothes in a very similar handlebar bag by Zefal (9 litres I think). Worked great. I will switch the top tube bag to a small frame bag and for that I will probably need a fidlock or something. There's always something new to learn from other people's experiences.
Hi, again! I’ve been binging Your videos recently! Love Your personality and the things You choose to share with us. I realzie this video is two uearts old, but wanted to note that MSR also makes the MSR Universal Canister Stand. It folds up small as well. Amazon has afew options made of plastic(?) that don’t fold, but probbaly weigh less.
Headed to Japan as soon the country opens. Riding the 3T Exploro with some bike packing kit for short hops. Great video and excellent road you were on. Can you tell me where and the name? I missed the link and would love to check it out. Thanks!
I think Fidlock drink kit is the most cool accessory bought for my struggle machine. When you need a short trip I can just leave both flasks at home and enjoy almost clean frame (e.g. easy for shouldering w/o any interfering cages).
I do live under a rock most of the time but I must applaud you on your drone controller solution. I thought someone else flew your drone as you ride along.
A+ videos all around. Super informative and to the point. Really appreciate all the reviews and budget options. Very happy I found your channel. Keep the videos coming
Wow - what an amazing ride. I want to put this place on my list. As a bit of a gear nerd myself I have some of the same camping gear..... I've switched to an enlightened equipment sleeping bag (actually more of a quilt) - love it. Keep on riding.
Always kick back, whack it on 1080p and chiiiiiiil when one of these appears. Class as usual. Love the bike packing micro adventures. Hikers out @ 4am, total weirdos! ✌️❤️
Hi there, Great video - again - thank you so much! Could you share / create a video what kind of food you are taking for a 2-day trip? From energy gels to dry freeze food?
Have you considered rivnuts for cleanly mounting frame bags (no straps)? Or making your own bags and other gear? Old sewing machines can be fine (see "vintage Japanese sewing machines" - beautiful). And it's amazing what you can do hand sewing with a simple needle, thread, and a few basic stitches (good YT tutorials on these).
Not considered that no. Don't have the time and I'm not doing enough bike packing to warrant doing something custom. Never know what the future brings though.
Great gear and a well produced video! Japan is stunning. I use your bikepacking tips and a similar setup for commuting purposes. Just curiously, what do you use for a bicycle lock for overnight?
Robert de Wit cheers! If anything a small cable lock, but honestly I’m not worried about anyone taking the bike when camping up in the mountains unless the deers starts riding 😜
Overall yet another great video, but that open and closing sequence... OMG, brings back great memories and stirs the spirit! Definitely going to be getting back out there!! Thank you, mate!
I was wondering why I found your text hard to read. I thought it was the colour or font, but it is because it is in all caps. I really struggle to take in info in all caps. Studies have proven that this is true for most viewers. Great channel.
Yes, like reginator said, it’s japan. If I’m not camping at an official camping ground I’m usually in some remote spot in the mountains where nobody comes through especially at night. So the bike I lay down just behind the tent... if you’re really paranoid you can tie one tent line to the bike, that would wake you up if a dear try’s to steal the bike ;)
Me and my brother are hoping to do a 3 week tour around Japan next summer. We'll be staying at hostels and hotels rather than in tents though. That top tube bag looks very useful!
Thanks man! I got the handlebar bag custom made from a local bag maker. Concept is same: waterproof fabric, harness, plus the bag is expandable. Sometimes I carry heavy stuff in it. With that kind of weight it pull on the hoses. Do you have any suggestions to maintain gap between bag and hoses for the protection of hoses?
Thanks so much for sharing another great video. The area west of Chichibu looks like some of the most inaccessible and therefore some of the nicest and car free riding of anywhere, but it's so tough to get to from close to central Tokyo. I'll have to try bike packing as well or at least stay somewhere overnight but I'll definitely try the lake side road this year!

David Adamus to me it’s kind of backwards to start with the bag first (but I did so myself 🤪) If I had do it all over I would get the main camping pieces first then get the bag that fit those pieces the best.
@@ridesofjapan that makes sense to me. Basically I'm trying to find a way to start collecting the gear. Though if it doesn't all fit the bags, you might get stuck buying bags again. Will probably work on the sleeping stuff first like a tent, sleeping pad, and sleeping bag.
Great video. Is your drone housed or carried in that controller module you mounted on your stem? And how many teeth in your front sprocket? Yes, seriously :) I am thinking of converting my MTB trainer to a bikepacker. Those tires you are running, I looked at them online last week and liked them, but am thinking that the nubby parts will wear down faster than a smoother tire, and that a smoother tire will offer a more efficient ride VS any tire with nubbies or other "traction" devices. Yeah, I heard that int'l shipping from Revelate was crazy ex! Instead, I purchased my Revelate bags from a dealer in Australia. Not sure if I am allowed to name him here but shipping from Oz to Singapore was very reasonable!
There’s a few stores here in japan selling very limited amount of revelate gear, usually only frame and seat packs. The premium they put on though it’s just as cheap to fork out for the international shipping depending on the product.
Greatest drone shots I've seen on your channel so far, and what a beautiful scenery and road! I'm a flatlander, not really good at climbing plus a fourteen kg heavy bike, but nevertheless I envy you for having such landscape near your hometown.
You might want to check out the Tailfin Aeropack- light weight and much more stable than the seat bags that tend to sway when you climb out of the saddle
Specialized Zee cage, it comes left or right handed and eliminates the problem of not having enough room above your bottle to get it. Been using them for years on my mtb
