New GLA 35! AMG’s Cheapest SUV Reviewed!

So #MercedesAMG likes making SUVs because they sell so many now. And the entry to that #AMG SUV family is now this the GLA 35 4Matic. The less powerful brother to the GLA45S we recently reviewed here:

So first let’s see what the car brings to the table. The previous GLA 45 had 380BHP, 0-60 of 4.8 seconds from the 4 cylinder single turbo engine. The 4matic had a maximum of 50% power to the rear. And the car itself was an oddly less practical car than the A45. But despite this it was really quite good looking in full fat AMG form. With 1 million units sold, it’s no wonder AMG figured a cheaper model was in order. Our new 35 features the same format as the old 45, with a 2 cylinder 4 pot, the same 4 magic system, same brakes, but suspension and steering borrowed from the GLA45S of the new generation!!
It’s only 0.2secs behind the old GLA 45 to 60, and the engine produces 306BHP with 400NM of torque. But these are the same figures as the A35, which is a smaller lighter more agile hatchback. Same goes for the CLA 35! So will this car feel sluggish? And then there’s the matter of the 7 seat cooler looking GLB 35!

I just don’t see the need for this, get a A35 or if you really need space, GLC43 or an old GLA 45! 🤷🏻♂️ My opinion. Anyway, who is excited for the merch?!! Exhaust On Or Else!! ‼️👹
What makes AMG so successful is to AMG everything and provide variety. Though I don't like the idea of 35 family at all. But as soon as they create the A35, GLB35 and CLA35, it's gotta be a GLA35. They need to keep the family complete.

@Remove Before Race Yes sir. Your right！Not only C63R. Every AMG fan can see there're serious problems with the current or upcoming lineup now. It's like they don't make those products so special anymore. I don't know why they are in such a hurry to go electric (4cylinder C63s) while M power ones are still petrolpowered with the new petrol engine. Also the GLE63s(ML AMG) are the father of all luxury performance SUVs and now they totally lost its spirit. They also decided to cancel S63 Coupe in the next generation and I just can't get over it. In the future, E53 Coupe will be the top end pillarless hardtop coupe instead. That's a shame to AMG and to the Mercedes brand.
Not only the lineup but they are delaying the delivery of AMGs all over the world. It feels like Mercedes didn't put enough resources to AMG like BMW did to M at present.
In my country they didn't take good care of the marketing and was way behind M power. All they want to do is to sell more G63s(cost 0.5M$ here) to the rich people who know nothing about AMG cars but G63. They didn't give a damn about the future because G63s are giving them easy money.
Over here the GLC43 is quite a bit more expensive and I really don't like the look of the old GLA interior. It wasn't on par with the price...
In my eyes the GLA 35 makes perfect sense. See it as a fast GLA with a dash of AMG. Not a real AMG. If I wanted the pure fun I'd go for an A45. Since I don't like the looks of the GLB and don't need the space a GLA 35 would be great, or a CLA 35 or 45 shooting break...
If I wanted the pops and bangs I would bye a sports car this is a small suv for driving from A to B with a luxury vehicle. So no need for pops and bangs. Its not a lambo or ferrari corvette or mustang .

Such a pointless AMG. My stage 1 tuned c300 makes more power then this thing. They are only hurting the AMG brand by this.

GLB would made more sense , would be miles more iconic, and justify it's existence if they made it look like a mini G class just like the Suziki Jimny
Interesting! I bought one yesterday for my 78yr old Mum. She needs a small SUV to transport my 81yr old dad who has scoliosis (a bent back). She currently has an SLC 200, which has been awesome, but sadly getting just a little too low for them both to get in & out of now. Im looking forward to her next Mercedes Benz Chapter...!

Please give us an update on the 2021 C63(s) !! I have had one on order since April and its been such a hectic process. I know 2021 will still be the w205 models but when will they be starting production & be in dealers??

All the available options should be mostly standard on a car like this. Getting the options that most people want makes this car a good $10k more than it should be.

I remember a time where AMGs had hand built motors and were exclusive cars. Now everything has an AMG badge on it and it's just watering down the name and heritage. I love the C43 AMG but it should just be called a C430 or C450 but no AMG attached to it. That should be reserved for the actual C63 AMG.
Seems 90% people commenting here have not driven the new a35 with it 8 speed dual clutch gear box before make any comment drive it other wise never undestand what I am saying

I saw an old (maybe 90’s?) GL 500 coupe yesterday. It looked very (not) Mercedes. I thought it was a weird old Chevy minivan/CUV. I feel like this new generation harkens back to that era of this series. The previous version to the current was much more Euro-luxury looking.
Ah yes, the GL500 coupe from the 90's. If it didn't look like a Mercedes to you, perhaps it's because it wasn't, as there is no such thing.

AMG is like a cocktail at happy hour. It’s full of ice with less alcohol and you’re paying more for it.

Hmmm....it sounds like a big mix of parts that combine to make a mixed up car...good but confused. I think A45S with the A35 alternative then forget the dull and boring GLB and move on to a NEW GLC 43/53AMG with a total overhaul as it is now years out of date compared to the rest of the range. As such..we have too many models and too much confusion...more is less...Porsche Macan S 2021 Hybrid please and as soon as possible!!!🤔😀😀😀😀

Mercedes I am totally lost, there are too many models in the range to allow for any individuality.
I therefore find searching for the right model an exhausting experience. The same is also true of BMW.
Just my thoughts.
How many of them do you want to buy? Take your time over the right car for you.
There must be a favorite of the bunch, for example bmw I like the 4 series and the x5. Audi I like the S5 and Q5 Mercedes GLC 63S and S class coupe or the E63 and this is the first GLA model that actually caught my eyes.
It just looks like the ‘B Class’. Puts me right off. Previous gen GLA was more of a better looker.
Why does this amg gla 35/45 not have a heated steering wheel especially on a suv. Not even the option to order it. The lower modke gla 250 has it thats ridiculous no sence.

I hated the previous CLA 45. The transmission was a non-starter. It was, frankly, terrible. It was driveable in Sport+. Otherwise, it was unbearable IMO.

This is getting dumb. They're ruining AMGs name. AMG is supposed to be exclusive and do special models. At this point they should separate into two different car companies. What is the point of doing cheaper models so amg is more accessible? The whole point was that Mercedes made an amazing car and then amg was the ultimate masterpiece of that car. Hate that they're doing this.

The AMG models have been sportier versions of the regular Mercedes models for a long, long time. Nothing that exclusive, or rare about them. If you're such a big shot buy yourself a Ferrari or something.

Every car expert knows that touring cars are so much better. But car buyers decide differently. And they are right. Several CEOs were fired for the same mistake. And a fast growing share of buyers want not only an SUV, but a fast SUV. The decision which car to buy is taken more and more by women; in many countries more than 50% of the decision takers are women. A fast growing share of women like fast cars, posh cars or both. RemoveBeforeRace: get a woman with a strong mind into your team, if you want to succeed. She could explain the SUV market in a totally new light to you first, then in your channel, where she should have more than 50% of the time.
Else you will have to join the CEOs men at their golf club for retirement.
