    1952 Cadillac Convertible Paint and rust removal results
    After working on removing the paint and rust from most of the 1952 Cadillac Convertible we took the car outside to see and dents and rot spots. We then decided while we're looking over the car it might be beneficial for the viewers to see what we look for next. As you can see for the age of the car it is in fantastic shape. There are a few rot spots we will most likely make patch panels for. Unfortunately we didn't have enough time to finish removing all the rust, we still have the front hood and a little surface rust on the fender. Next we will try to tackle all the rust from underneath the car. Stay tuned cause that one will be pretty wild!

    I think you're really tapping into your audience with these videos.
    I'm one of those people who find rusty junk, buy some tools (including a set of shrinking discs from you), watch videos, and try to restore it myself.
    Thanks Wray.

    There's I guy I ran across that buy's those inspection sticker's or good close up pics He reproduce's them for restoration re-installation. Saving the original for the paperwork folder. I'll look him and post his info. I've purchased 2 and they are nice repro's. Just thought I would mention it. Neat nostalgia piece to put back on. OR you may already know about him or someone who does ? Amazing survivor ! You are a lucky fella !

    That vehicle is a lot less putrid than it first appeared. You've made a lot of progress in a very short time. It looks like it's going to make a great case study, with samples of many of the problems a restorer faces.

    Great videos. Very interested to see how to best deal with that undercarriage rust. Or just dealing with rust in hard to reach areas in general. I am repairing the rocker panels on my 2003 Volkswagen that have severely rusted away and its been a challenge to access the built up rust for cleaning on the inner sides of the metal that has been exposed.r

    Hi Wray . So this was what you worked on in your father's workshop as a boy ? And l guess it brings back happy memories so you just had to have it ! She really does look remarkably good . As we say over the pond "nothing on a big ship!" And lets be honest they don't come much bigger ! Soda blasting ? How's the engine ? I wonder if the rust on the left fender is years of mud , grime and gravel ! Great stuff !

    • @proshaper
      @proshaper  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      At my Grandfather's restoration shop we mostly worked on 1930s Classics, J Duesenbergs, Packard, Rolls Royces, Auburns, Bentleys, Stutzes, etc. No soda blasting. The engine is free but I haven't turned it over. I will be doing a compression test. If it has compression it will start, but it will get rebuilt.

    I cringe every time I see someone reach for a grinder to remove old paint and rust. Your "do no harm" method rules.

      Those stripping discs that are like a plastic mesh don’t sand or touch the metal and take the paint off quickly. If anything the metal comes out a bit polished.

  • @policedog4030

    Good project! The metal looks great, and it wouldn't be fun if it was too easy. When I first saw it I thought: "Elvis!" But actually 1952 was a little too early for him - he was still a Junior in High School in 1952. That year Caddy had the Sombrero Hubcaps with the cloisonne type crests; I hope you keep the steelie wheels; and I know its pushy but wanna vote for whitewall tires. Another wheel idea though would be those new genuine wire wheels - like these: www.truespoke.com/cadillac-kelsey-hayes-wire-wheels Curb weight must be at least two tons! Shout out and three cheers to you and what must be many minions manning the putty knives and steel wool! Fun to see it shaping up so quickly.

      I want wire wheels on it. I'll make a steel tonneau panel to cover the back seat too.

    Great job Wray , how are you going to keep it from flash rusting?? I have a '59 Impala I am about to start restoring so this series is going to be awesome!

    • @proshaper

      A quick wipe with phosphoric acid will quickly clean any new humidity rust. The phosphoric also leaves a layer of protection. Rusting from this point forward to when it gets primered is a non issue.

    The drivers fender might out of whack because of worn radiator support/body mounts or maybe, my experience with drag cars (not that this was a drag car) but getting on the gas, the front left rises up. Maybe the previous driver had a heavy foot, too heavy for a early 50s convertible.

    What is the best way to remove undercoating?

    • @proshaper
      @proshaper  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paint remover removes undercoating. A heat gun and putty knife also helps. Follow up with lacquer thinner steel wool, elbow grease and paper towels.
