This was filmed before the big winter storm in Texas. We thankfully were back at Kathryn's parent's house and we got very lucky with (mostly) keeping power, having heat, and having running water. So many people around Texas were not as lucky though. 😭 Thank you to everyone who checked in on us!

Safety is our #1 priority and we want to stress that this adventure, and all future adventures, will be done responsibly and with the health of others in mind. Here are the steps we are taking everyday, including in these videos:
😷Masks and face coverings. We wear these anytime we are near others outside and especially indoors. If we don’t have a mask on in a video, it’s 99% because there was no one around.
❌Not seeing anyone outside of our household. We are currently living with 4 family members and have a strict “do not see anyone outside of the household” family policy. The only interactions we have with others is quickly grabbing takeout or going to the grocery store.
⏰ Exploring early. We have been starting most of our days before sunlight so we can limit our interactions.
🧼 Washing and sanitizing our hands
6️⃣ Keeping our distance. We are trying to stay at least 6 ft from others, which truthfully isn’t always possible (and then we make sure we cover our face).

I have lived in Amarillo all my life, 26 years. I have gone here probably 500 times and it still does not get old. The back of the park is the free-rang back packing area that is like 4,000 acres of no roads and minimal trails for people to just go explore and go back-packing for a few nights, that's my favorite area because there is never many people out there.

Wife and I visited Palo Duro on a day trip on a 7 night trip to Caprock. We're older Texans who until recently knew nothing about either park, but they're now among our favorites. Seeing your Caprock and Palo Duro videos were a big help in helping us know what to expect. We'll be returning to Palo Duro with the travel trailer for a week or so in the fall and will definitely include the PD Caves trail while we're there.

My favorite hike is to go to the end of the paved roads where they loop around, then park and follow the stream. If you follow it far enough you will get to a barbed wire fence that marks the boundry of the state part of the canyon and private property. it's a pretty long walk though.

Loved this video! It’s the coolest place and we plan on going back when it’s warmer. We were there a few days before the Arctic Vortex hit. We were making a fast trip back from Az to NW Ar. We lucked out and there was a cancellation so instead of just going for the day spent the best night there. A running creek behind our camp spot. Woke up to snow flurries but didn’t slow our ride around the park area. Was super cold getting out to take photos of awesome views and boulders. The ride down into the canyon in a 31 ft Class C wasn’t bad at all. One place the brakes did get a little warm. Love the way they have all the campsites in different areas with tables and some have covers. Our spot would have been nice and shady under big trees had it been the summer season. Everyone should visit Palo Duro Canyon, it’s beautiful and we had such a pretty sunset too🥰 We waved goodbye and said we will be back when we can stay longer. We got home late sat night and the storm rolled in behind us. We did fine, I had read an earlier post yawl made that all was good at home too. Never ever had weather like that here! You two have a fun week ahead and thanks again for sharing the sights and sounds of that adventure!😁👍

Oh wow, we’re so glad you made it before the snow storm! We keep saying how thankful we are that we weren’t up there in the van during it. Our heater wouldn’t work because it was SO cold and the diesel gelled up, so we would’ve been frozen in the van. We’re so happy you enjoyed the park! It’s one of the coolest spots in TX!

Hi, it's me again from Germany. If you should choose between Big Ben National Park and Palo Duro Canyon State Park; what would you choose? While Planing my trip, I would like the see the Big Bend National Park with a friend from Austin and then make a Roadtrip over El Paso to Albuquerque. But when I now see the pictures from Palo Duro Canyon, I think about to change my route. Austin -> Dallas -> Oklahoma City - Palo Duro Canyon and then to the Monument Valley. What would you suggest? Btw, what about snakes ;-) ? Here in Germany, when you hike, you don't see not much snakes. And when you see one - it's not dangerous. Are there a lot of snakes, when you hiking on your trips?

We LOVE big bend! In our opinion it’s the best part of Texas. So we’d highly recommend going there! Palo Duro is awesome, but big bend has a lot more to see and do in our opinion. And we have never seen a snake on a trail, but we do know they are out there!

I've heard you mention parking at Walmart, Cracker Barrell, BLM spots, rest areas, and pull-offs.
I've not yet heard you mention truck stops. I can understand why a truck stop would be at the bottom of the list of places to camp except in an emergency. They're LOUD, SMELLY, and the asphalt is sticky! HA!
There is a book that you can find INSIDE the truckstop called, Truckstops and Big Truck Parking in the U.S.
That may not be the exact title but it's close.
There are little known, little used, off-the-beaten-path places to park all over.
For example... I-30, exit 62 (East side of the highway), Phillips 66 with a LARGE LOT! No one is ever there because the BIG truckstop and all the food are on the WEST side of the Interstate.
I parked behind Papa-Bears restaurant, in Chicago, every week for three years and I was the only one there every week. (Their Reuben with Baby Swiss on Marble Rye is off the chain)
Anyway, I'm ramblin and now I'm hungry. Que-sa-dia with fajita chicken from Walmart! It's the American Way. L8er...

    • @AdventuresofAplusK
      @AdventuresofAplusK  3 ปีที่แล้ว

We have stayed at some! It really depends though, usually we can find a quieter option nearby, but definitely not opposed to truck stops. We will take anything free and legal!

That cave does have another exit. There are a few other caves all around that area, some larger than the one you went in. When our kids were little, those caves were their playground. Many great memories. Hiking up to the top of that mesa, Timber Mesa, is a worthy hike. On one side you have great views of Sad Monkey and the other side views of Sunday Canyon with the Lighthouse in the distance.

I live in Amarillo and go down to the Canyon once or twice a month, more in the summer. If you go back, definitely do the GSL Trail. It has the best views of the park IMO. It can be challenging in some parts but it’s so beautiful. By the way, there are mountain lions and coyotes out at night. You were right to be scared! 😆 You came at a good time because the park just reopened a bunch of trails (including Rock Garden, which is one of my favorites!) after a couple months of controlled hunting. Thanks for an awesome representation of the Panhandle! It doesn’t get enough love.

We were lucky that we were the only ones at the big cave and it was amazing. In fact, we were all alone on all our hikes. It was great! Bummed we didn’t know about the Palo Duro caves, that looked fun. I think the Rock Garden trail is under rated. We loved it as much if not more than the lighthouse. We even climbed some of the boulders and were like kids playing around (we’re in our 40s and 50s) lol. Love your videos!
