  • We're legging it! Find out how to leg a narrowboat through a canal tunnel as we visit the Dudley Canal and Tunnel Trust and leg a canal narrowboat, the old fashioned way, through Lord Ward's section of Dudley Tunnel.
Many thanks to Dudley Canal & Tunnel Trust for allowing us to spend the day with them. You can find out more about the tunnels on their website www.dudleycanaltrust.org.uk.

Awww that was absolutely brilliant!! Proper made me laugh out loud when poor Shaun couldn’t reach the wall 🤣🤣🤣🤣 especially when Colin almost had his knees up his nose!!
I’m sat in my car outside a prison waiting for my colleague to arrive so we can go in and X-ray some naughty boys, and if they’ve got me on camera they will wonder what I was doing in my car, laughing with tears rolling down my face ha ha

This is a superb vlog! I am a history buff and this is by far my favorite story you have shared. We had canals and tunnels in the USA at the same time Britain did, but we just shut them down and covered them up when trains came along.Such a shame. Now I can know what the coal miners in Pennsylvania had to do in the 1790’s to get the coal down the canals! Great bit of living history, thanks so much for sharing😊

    Oooow aaaaaah!
Here in Australia we don't have tunnels on our canals, so all this is new.
Also we don't have narrow boats......or canals.
And most of our rivers don't have water in them most of the time.
And your canals are older than Australia......well let's not get into that.
So you two are bringing some real experiences to us.
Thanks guys keep up the good work.
Maybe one day we can travel again and try it out for ourselves.
    Yay!

Superb video and brought back memories. In late 1970's I took six 15 year olds for weekend on Black Country canals. We 'legged' that tunnel (kids providing power), no electric motor and lighting provided by 2 Tilley lamps pressure TVO)! Kids loved it. Many of branches were derelict and closed. The whole area was run down and one point had to fish out shopping trolleys to enable passage. The trip would have failed modern risk assessments from the start.
Earlier, mid 70's I took 16 of same age on Nothants C C boat (----- Rose) and Butty for 3 days out of Braunston.. Council employed boatman but 'we' had to operate all the locks - luckily kids took to the task quickly and there was always a volunteers to go ahead to prepare next lock. The kids all had social problems and everyone had chance for half an hour on tiller. Girls had beds in motor boat, us boys sleeping bag on camping mat on butty floor. Unfortuneately modern H & S and 'snow flake' attitudes means such rich and stimulating experiences are history. It was 90% traditional boats then. - all with their traditional Castle & Roses painting.

Finally watching the final season of Peaky Blinders, just saw the scene where Tommy is reminding Arthur about the 3172 of blackness that was Dudley tunnel.
I remembered this video right away and rewatched it.
As an American living in a town in Ohio that had a canal in the mid-1800's for about 30 years, I dream of making it over to your still functioning canal system!

This is my neck of the woods! I've been through Dudley tunnel a few times on tours. Once, my fiance (now husband) and I did a special tour around Halloween where actors dressed up as ghosts in the caverns and told us some of the history of the area and the tale of how their character died! It was night time and the tunnel was lit up throughout with tea lights. Very atmospheric but it was flippin' cold as you would imagine.
I live a couple of miles away in a town called Coseley on the BCN Main Line. We've got a tunnel of our own, but it's nowhere near as long as Dudley Tunnel.

Happy memories - and the reason I became obsessed with the canals. I hadn't a clue what a canal even was when I was invited on a convoy of boats back in 1975 as a teenager for a weeks trip around the Black Country. We legged all the way through the Dudley tunnel - as it had just reopened - 16 of us on a 4 berth nb to get under the loading gauges - with a chorus of "Jerusalem" as we came out at Park Head. Birmingham was fascinating place back then with many foundries still working away canalside. I know they've done a fantastic job in making it all more clean & accessible now, but it was great to see it when the water was black with oil and still had working boats on it.

And, tunnel walking eh?...once again you’ve provided a fascinating insight into the early days of narrowboats and the physical work involved in their operations. The horses moving on to the the other side of the tunnel independently is another tribute to what a remarkable contribution they made in those early days of canal transport. Thanks boys, James and Colin 🤗

Talking of horses finding their way over the hill to the other end of the tunnel reminded me of the milkman. Back in the 50s the United Daries, where I lived very close to Marble Arch in London, had a horse drawn cart, Express was very modern with electric powered milk floats. Each Saturday the milkmen would gather at the Duke of Kendal to do their books. The UD milkman was often a bit under the weather and could be seen fast asleep on his cart while the horse made its way back to the depot, stopping for red traffic lights.

Yet another superb Vlog. The phrase to "Leg it" may have originated from the canals?
So how did you get on with the Black Country (YamYam) accent?
I'm a born and bred Brummie, and wur (we are) frever having the P taken out of our accent. Brummies say you as Yow, and Black Country Folk say Yam. Yam ok? Hence why they are known as Yamyams.

Hopefully we can go next May - I'm going to suggest we check out the museum as it looks like a good day out. Our running club weekends usually consist of drinking, a Parkrun, drinking, museums, drinking, running, drinking, walking, drinking, a train trip, drinking and more drinking - its often said that our running club is a thinly disguised drinking club...
