    I love when I can hear you quietly giggling at the squirrels’ antics! I have always enjoyed watching my own squirrels chasing each other up and down trees but I didn’t realize just how entertaining they are until watching them here! Thank you for feeding and thoughtfully caring for these beautiful creatures! ❤️

    Remy is soooooo cute, and he stayed to eat peanuts, didn't run off with peanuts - he didn't like the avocado, but it might have moisturized his feet as he stood on avocado.😊

      @@Squirrels_at_the_window Yes, it's quite a charge when you romance a squirrel and they finally trust you enough to eat out of your hands, walk on your legs when sitting down...but the biggest charge for me? When they hold your finger or hand with their little hands while eating! Adorable pets that you can love from afar.

    Squirrels are individuals. Some will like sunflower seeds more than dried corn. They love peanuts and fruits(dried and fresh) because that’s cake to them. They’d sell their own mother for peanuts! They’re supposed to eat healthy stuff like veggies, insects, bird eggs, etc. but the more expensive the nut, the more they love it (haven’t tried Brazil or macadamia since they’re not indigenous to the contiguous US)

      Oregon is big producer of hazelnuts. Where I live in SW Washington state we have one of only 4 populations of transplanted Eastern Grey Squirrels. We have about 10 that come to our deck. They really go for the hazelnuts and also like shelled walnuts. Those are fairly pricey. The staple however is a no waste mix with a high percentage of peanuts.

    I made friends with a chipmunk a few years back. I would put out things I knew he had never had before - raspberries, pecans, melon and his favorite...mango. He waited every single day for me to put something out for him. This went on all summer long. One day I told him this would be the last day because I was moving. I went inside leaving the door open. 5 minutes later I turn around and there he is inside the kitchen looking up at me. He had never been anywhere but the backyard before. I doubt he understood English but I do think he understood the sentiment.

    Squirrels experiment, they taste things that might be edible although they can tell that by smell. Here in South Florida squirrels eat ackees, which is native to Africa and introduced to the Caribbean. Ackees are nominally poisonous until they burst open naturally. The squirrels and the birds figure it out and I haven't seen any poisoned critters, yet.

    Give them some big round corn chips. The squirrel I fed them to was begging for food when I was at the park, so I tossed him some. He would take them to the tree and sit on a branch, and spin them as he ate them. It was rather entertaining ❤️🇺🇸

    I am sorry your squirrels didn't go for the avocado and give you an avocado eating show. For our squirrels it started slow too, especially when they are used to all kinds of nuts. I only buy them when they are $.99 each or 4 for $3.00 and I cut them up like you did (4 sliver lengths/half) and I will press unshelled peanuts, walnuts, pecans, hazel nuts and almonds into them as an attractant. This way when they remove the nut from the avocado, there will be some avocado on the nut and they will be introduced to the avocado and get a taste that way. I find 40-60% like the avocado and when the nuts are gone, believe me, they will eat the avocado and it is a circus show to watch. They will primarily go for the nuts fist, ALL THE TIME. Lol. Thank you for trying and sharing your experience. I hope you will try it again sometime 😀🥑😀.

      Thank you as well for sharing this. 😊❤️ I notice in the comments that some say that some of their squirrels like avocado(like yours), but others say that is not good for them and it can give them diarrhea, so I don't know if I should try again because I wouldn't want to hurt them 😟 Especially since they rejected it, I don't want to force it on them. Were you able to observe your squirrels after they ate avocado, to see if it made them sick or not?

    • @woodsspy327
      @woodsspy327 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Squirrels_at_the_window The ratio of avocado to nuts, seed, corn and other miscellaneous treats represents less than 5% of their diet I feed them. I give them on average of 2 avocados a week, so it isn't like you might think that I have or suggest feeding them avocado at the rate you are feeding them nuts. Way too expensive.
      Also, to answer your question, I have never observed a squirrel getting sick or having diarrhea. All the droppings I have observed are moderately hard and dark in color. I have seen TH-cam videos of squirrels briefly choking on peanut butter and don't suggest feeding them that because they eat too fast, and it can get stuck in their throats. Always have water out for them when feeding as they need to wash down all of them nuts and to cool down.

      @@Squirrels_at_the_window Our squirrels also took a little bit to figure out what avocado was too, but now they love it. I pressed a walnut into the avocado to show them it was food. Avocado is high in healthy fats, so if you can convince them to eat it (sparingly as the other commenter mentioned) it can be very good for them.

I guess the Avocados have a nutty kind of taste, but myself, I have never tried them. I like how the 2nd Squirrel stands on the Avocados and eats all the nuts. At least the first Squirrel seemed to like the Avocado treat. Take care.

    Try putting some in half a peanut shell.I got a couple hooked on peanut butter that way. So funny watching them trying to get it off the roof of their mouths. Squirrels are funny about trying food they have never seen before. Many avocado growers hate squirrells because they eat so many.

      @@Squirrels_at_the_windowThree years ago I moved to a 2 acre colonial farm site. It is loaded with very old oak, walnut and pine trees, I have been squirrel wispering since I got here. It is no surprise that pine cone seeds, acorns and walnuts are their staple food. Squirrels living in California on an avocado ranch will have avocados as a primary food source. I'm retired and spend every morning and evening on my deck having my cofffee and feeding my friends with various treats. I have 8 squirrels and 2 chipmunks that eat from my hand. In three years, I have never seen a squirrel deficate. I do not understand how anyone could know if a squirrel has diarrhea. I have countered numerious post that peanuts are bad for squirrels with the actual nutritional value which is quite good. People often post misinformation believing they actually know something, when all they have done is watch another video made by someone who is clueless.
