  • Black Ops! Building the Revell 1/48 SR-71A out of the box. In part four I discuss the ideas I used to create a subtly shaded and interesting black finish. Controversy reigns supreme - Pre-shading vs Tinting vs Black basing vs Jenesis ....

I am a sucker for paint tests of any sort, but this one was a brilliant demonstration and I agree entirely!
    Great job!

Fantastic explanation of the color theory and how to make these subtle changes in value and tone & tint. I have held off on buying this kit because others have said it has so many fit issues. However, your detailed build and beautiful scribe work have convinced me to go for it. I really enjoy your in-depth technical, yet very understandable explanations.

Thankyou Michael, I did find myself struggling quite a few times in this one, so I'm glad you still understood stuff (my brain doesn't seem to work properly post covid, I sometimes have a bit of trouble with words and memory)

I've just been painting some scale miniatures (40k) black. I remembered this video and it's been a great help to add some variation, much appreciated! My Blackbird is still in the massive box so I will be back again at some point. 🙌👍

New Subscriber - Your discussion of painting is both informed and novel. It also nice to see that modeling is not all grumpy old men. Your attention to detail is just enough without being overly anal which I find all to often in the hobby.

Great video Jen, I’ve been doing a few black planes recently , Boulton Paul Defiant and Blackjack, blue was what I was adding to get me where I wanted to be, I also tried different clear coat finishes to vary the reflective properties and that gives a nice effect 👍👍

Really good Jen. Love the gouge on the black paints. I use a lot of XF-64 Red Brown as a base, then layer mixes with blue and neat black for variations and low lights.
Pre-shading is an utter waste of time, the colours look awful and 1 pass too many and its gone. "Black basing" I think is just as useless most of the time, the colours also look transparent although it can work on greys if done properly. The marbled look looks horrid!
I would say though that "Colour basing" has been around for years. Its called "post shading"...! 😊

I literally said that I wasn't claiming it as my idea lol, I have always called it During Shading up to now, because you do it as you go along!

In another life, I was a painting major. One thing I learned then about doing my own mixing of paint was that one color of blue can act very differently than another (depending on color hue and amount of actual pigment in the paint). Underpaintings with one color and then glazing with another can give some nice variation (where just using a straight black for shading or a glaze is going to be boring and tone things down). I happened on your channel while finding airbrush reviews and am following the SR-71 build. Getting back to modeling with a couple Star Trek models and then will be going to a F14a (and who knows, the SR-71 after). The hobby has changed quite a bit. Since I also have experience with 3D animation, I've gotten into 3D printing. Made a custom base for my current kit, and will do for F14 (and with electronics being easier, thinking of adding nav and cockpit lights). My current kit is a Klingon bird of prey, which if you go off the studio model, has some interesting shifts in green. I started with a darker olive green, then sprayed thin layers of pale green to the color I wanted. Have mixed my own ratios of greys, transparent green and blues, to get more shifts in paneling. Then probably will save some more weathering in panel lines and adding rust (might also shade some transparent pale green over select raised areas). I see a lot of pre-shading videos for the F14a...and I guess it's not as dead looking with having a translucent navy grey being coated. But I'm going to be modeling the high visibility Jolly Rogers, which were painted. Makes sense to lay down solid colors and then weather with washes and highlights with drybrush.

That's very true, I have a set of primary colour tinters in my drawer for that reason

@@JenesisDesignsandModelcraft And adding varying warm and col highlights to individual black panels of the SR-71 make it look more interesting. I've seen some neat patterns with photos of the SR-71 in flight: I wonder if they also changed while in flight. I remember reading that the titanium shell had some gaps that would seal while going supersonic. Before that happening, having fuel leak while on the ground. Certainly should also influence to color as well.

How nice to see colour theory applied and pre-shading debunked. I have always maintained that pre-shading was crap and black basing a waste of my bloody time. I always base coat using a "base" colour(s). After all, the real object is not made of dirt and dents so why start that way? Rather, I start with a sense of the base material (wood, metal, canvas) to a degree that depends largely on how much weathering and chipping I plan (usually not that much to be honest), I then move to the paint (camo, natural metal or canvas) and then tone, weather, filthy up and bugger around until I get the result I am looking for.
I worked as a photo re-toucher way back (early '70's) when we still used gouaches for black and white photos and maintained a warm set (red shift) and cool set (blue shift). Bloody dull job, but I learned a lot.
Your SR-71 is starting to look fab, but I still won't get one. Cheers!

I wouldn’t even tackle a small 1/72 F117 because it was “all black”!
Might try it now though with your tutorial.

I've never liked the idea of preshading because of the lack of control it's much easy to post shade especially when working with multi camo finishes. Some preshaded models do look very good but it has to be done very well and to many model just look overdone and unrealistic. I've always post shaded.
