Since Tanmay already highlighted the benefits of smallcases, here's some pointers before you invest: 1. If you're looking to start an SIP in a smallcase, a fee of Rs 50-100 would be charged on each deposit. 2-3 smallcases are exempt from this rule. Though if you're looking to invest large amounts, this shouldn't be a problem. 2. Some taxes and charges are also levied on each re-balance (by SEBI, BSE etc, not by smallcase). Basically you would be paying some amount for the readjustment of your portfolio. Again, this isn't significant if you're investing a relatively huge sum. 3. Only 2-3 smallcases allow you to start from a small amount (500-1000 bucks). For the rest, you would need upwards of 20-30K and you would only be able to invest in multiples of this amount. Here's a tip - If you're a know-nothing investor, consider investing in index funds/ETFs (don't necessarily need smallcase for that) as they grow with the GDP of the country and give you decent returns over a period of 15-20 years.
Sensible comment. If you're really a beginner and know nothing about stock markets, blindly invest in index ETFs. You will get more returns than 99% of the retail stock investors over a period of time.

@@RoninMarut Hi Ronin. Mutual funds are not eligible for taxation till the time you redeem them. So for instance you invest for 40years, you don't need to pay any tax for 40 years. Now other thing is debt or equity. If you redeem long term debt instruments ie after 3 years, you have to pay taxes as per your slab rates (i guess your father would be knowing that as well) and in case you redeem long term equity after 1 year, you get indexation benefits which reduces the tax. However, in short, till the time you don't redeem, invest! Also, small but steady is the best strategy!😊
