    What are the advantages and disadvantages of AP Access Point Mode? This information will help just as much as your video - thanks in advance.

      @d.b.n.3974 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think there is an advantage or disadvantage , I believe he was just giving us two ways that the system can be set up . The access point, from what I understand, is just basically a way to use the mesh system without it having to replace an existing router/modem. You're just using it as a go between router, adapted to your existing modem/router combo to boost your wifi signal when it's set to AP.

      Paul - Thanks so much for doing these videos.
      I have the 2.0.0.74 version of the software and have experienced continual internet drops. I contacted Netgear support and advised that I have a dual modem/router (M/R) with Comcast/Xfinity set to bridge mode. I asked them if the Orbi should be in router mode or access point (AP) mode and was told it definitely should be in router mode and not in AP mode.
      Their solution to the problem was to change the channel setting on the 2.4G band, but that hasn't worked. I can't find anything that would suggest a better solution, so I'm thinking of trying the AP mode despite what Netgear says. In order to do that, however, wouldn't I have to contact Comcast and have the M/R set back to non-bridge mode?
      Also, one proposed solution I found online referenced using AP mode and setting IP passthrough (IPP). I don't think you mentioned IPP in this video, so I'm assuming it is not needed. Is that correct?

    I'm confused why I should do this or what the advantages are. Because if I turn off the WiFI on my modem/router, then in effect, how would that be different than if I was connected to a modem-only device? This is what I don't understand.

    In AP mode, does Orbi still do the automatic band selection? Meaning if 2.4 is crowded will it automatically move stuff to 5.0? Or does AP mode literally only create mesh WiFi with no features or functions?

    Question - Hello, I currently have xfinity with ARRIS TG1682G (modem Wi-Fi combination). This device has the capability to be configured in bridge mode or not. Bridge not enable will run the wi-fi on the same device. With bridge enable the Wi-Fi will be ran by the attached Orbi mesh system. RBK50
    My Question - Should I install the Orbi in router mode or Access Point ?

    • @bkay77584
      @bkay77584 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Putting your ARRIS TG1682G in bridge mode effectively turns the modem/router combo into just a modem. You would then connect your main Orbi to the ARRIS TG1682G via the LAN connector, and enable it in router mode.

    There is more information required in this tutorial. After I am done setting the Orbi to Access Point mode, it now has a different SSID than my modem/router's original SSID, so now none of my smart devices will work that are connected to my old SSID. How do I get the orbi to mesh with the EXISTING SSID as it's not possible for me to manually change all the devices connected to my existing cable modem's SSID.

    What does ap mode do that makes it good for using with a modem that also works as a router?

    • @authorsauditions
      @authorsauditions 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The modem/router does all the dhcp and dns work. The Orbi and satellites almost become like network switches except they support Wifi. You can continue to use the ports on the Orbi and its satellites to "hardwire" devices as well.
      I like that Orbi puts your 2.4ghz and 5ghz on one network. I initially thought it made things complicated cos I wanted to decide which device should use which band. But having the Orbi take care of it means all my 2.4 and 5 GHz devices can see each other.

    • @omi_cs
      @omi_cs 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, he just suggests it so the Orbis do all the WiFi work, I will recommend that the SSID (WiFi network name) be different in the Modem/Router and in the Orbis, don't use the same.

    • @authorsauditions
      @authorsauditions 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I had Orbi and Verizon networks going simultaneously my Orbi Wifi kept crashing - e v e r y day! Netgear support recommends turning off Verizon wifi and using only Orbi Wifi. I set my Orbi to AP mode turned off the Verizon WiFi and everything works as it should and flawlessly.

    • @nolberding

      Double NAT'ing traffic can cause issues with streaming, VOIP, throughput, etc. You also might want to control your own local DHCP or network with your upstream router or DHCP server. There's plenty of reasons to run a wireless system without NAT, just make sure you have at least one NAT before hitting the internet. Otherwise your RFC1918 address will get lost in the ether.
