  • The Headstander Fly is an interesting approach to duplicating the shaky head technique in conventional bass fishing. This fly utilizes its clouser eyes, jig hook and rabbit wing to stand on its head. It's a great fly for bass, carp, walleye, catfish and even trout.

    Just moved here to North Dakota right on the Missouri river, I'll be tying this for the river as well as Lake Sakakawea and other close lakes for walleyes and smallies,cant wait for spring breakup.

    Great video. Every video I've watched has had fantastic tips. This channel is underrated and underviewed for sure. I've been suggesting it to my fishing buddies. ;)

      I think you'll have fun with it as it's proved to be a good, big fish producer. The dinks tend to grab the wing and miss the hook, which for me is a good thing.

    Love fishing for smallies! Not many where I live except for creeks in upper Delaware.

    I've been preparing for a spring trip to fish small mouth and watched your Headstander video. I haven't used rabbit strips like you did, and wondered about the wire wrap to secure the strip. First, is wire necessary, would some GSP do as well? If wire is better, what guage or diameter do you use? I enjoy your videos. I now live in Fla. but have an invite to stay close to the James River, where it comes through the mountains west of Lynchburg, Va.

      I know GSP is flexible, but I don't think I could wind him around a fly. I know, bad joke, but if you follow MMA . . .
      I'm using a medium wire. I don't know the gauge, but if you look at medium wire at the fly shop, that's it. Wire is easier to handle when wrapping a fly. I'm Loomis/Shimano pro staff so I'm very familiar with PowerPro. While I do use it for a variety of purposes, this would not be one of them. Wire is very easy to handle. The first wrap holds the rabbit wing in place without us doing anything. Very easy to apply, plus the wire adds a bit of weight, which is helpful.

      @@hooked4lifeca Thanks for the fast response. Amazon carries .1 and .2 mm. I imagine it's not too critical. I appreciate you putting underwater footage on fly tying videos. It really helps to visualize lures in action. Tight lines!

      @@hooked4lifeca I bought some .2mm wire in a six spool set from Amazon. It worked well, and ribbed the body as I've seen in videos and in shops. I tied with large bead chain that weighs the same as small lead eyes. I tied on both 4's and 2's. They should do well on largemouth, small mouth and inshore salt. I also tied some clousers with the Rabbit strips; very similar tie to the headstander jig.

      Yes, 18th inch and I'm using looking for a mottled or barred brown or gold brown

    What weight or size are the painted lead eyes?

      @hooked4lifeca  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      These are size large, painted lead eyes. We could use medium as well.
