Man why are the swarms so awesome this year? I’m loving it. I told my buddy I was catching lots of swarms (he owns Hive & Garden in West Linn) and he asked me where I put my bait hives. I told him “around your apiary”. He looked at me with that look but knew I was kidding 😂😂 He’s from England and I’m from Scotland. Good banter between two ex pats.

People get so annoyed with baiting around apiaries. I'd be really miffed if I found someone was purposefully trying to bait them next door! :)

Black Mountain Honey although it would be funny to do it at his place and attach a nature camera to catch his reaction. 😂

Laurence. Could you be kind enough to do a video on the requirements for a quarantine apiary?

Great video. Will have to put up a few bait hive myself now.

It's very exciting what with all the suspense! :)

I am a second year beekeeper and I want to know the earliest time I can make splits ie temperature, dates.

Its all dependent on location and spring build up. I can make splits with mated queens end of April/early May but they will be small

In one of your other videos about bait hives (older I think?) you said you use 6 frames in the top half but keep the lower half empty. Here though I see you're using the full 12 frame potential. Which is your preferred setup for bait boxes - 6 frames with space underneath or the full 12 frame with no empty void? Many thanks!

I do both to be honest. I have good success with both ways. Most important is good quality dark combs 👌

Any tips for improving the survival chances of a small swarm?

Frame of emerging brood. Frame of pollen. Feed 7 days after capture. Use drawn comb as opposed foundation. Dummy down hive to match number of frames.

Murphy's law - you say "these bees are quite calm really", then next frame - they go mental.

haha! I noticed that... To be fair to them, they hadn't orientated on that location, it was about 8c and blowing a gale! I'll reserve judgement but I've got much worse colonies ;)
