I’m so very happy that this audio still exists!
I am so disappointed about how many people here on Britain and all over it seems do not know about the life and stature of this man. I get this impression from people I have met and it has been compounded by seeing how few people have logged on to information provided here on TH-cam. This is despite the recent BLM world awakening today. I am white but he has always been my hero and I don't use that word lightly. Not only one of the greatest black men in the world but just the greatest man. I am a white person by the way. Sorry to have to say that because colour should not ever matter. Unfortunately it still does. His life should be on the school curriculum instead of some other historical figures. It would teach children so many things of utter importance for the advancement of humanity.
This has been a problem of mind for years, that people form other countries relate to Britain as a whole. where four Nations , Paul Robeson is celebrated in wales, today is the 5th October a mile stone in our history. many people in porthcawl and Pontypridd will be celebrating he was political activist in wales and scotland for the miners and from miners around the world. even in England if your working class. Today 22/10/20 I listened to an hour long programme on whold bbc radio on this great man. Then I googled and read much more about this great African American thus also ended up listening to this rich radio interview.

His accomplishment are astounding and 30 years before MLK. He could have kept quiet and enjoyed fame and fortune- accepted the consequences of his activism and the many problems it brought him. His importance has been erased or has faded. He was a genius, and a hero.

I'm listening to this in 2020 during the covid_19 pandemic. An inspiration of a man. I am English and I can see why the Welsh and Scottish loved him so much. The memory of this man should be honoured in America. RIP
Paul Roberson repeatedly pointed out the hypocrisy of equality in the United States of America. There were those who attempted to silence him. I am going to study this man and his works further.

I was called after Paul Robeson, This great man made such a big impression with my parents over this standing with miners and quarry man and the colonised repressed. they tried to erased him from popular history. But part of him will always be with me.

I recommend Martin Duberman’s authorized biography of Paul Robeson. I had the privilege of working on the Freedom of Information Act lawsuit on behalf of Duberman to gain FBI files on Paul Robeson that was part of the research for this biography. Robeson was a pictue of courage and integrity and should be studied in every American history class. He should be someone tht every person in our world knows about. He fought for civil rights when it was dangerous, he stood with labor unions around the world and for freedom movements around the world.
He was my Welsh fathers hero. It took me along time to understand why? What a man!!! What a story!!!! Thank God for TH-cam, and the history it preserves for us to be able to accsess easily. The quality of this interview is amazing.
Mr Robson was a democratic socialist, humanist and used his enormous gifts for the benefit of all peoples,rest in peace

Keep his autobiography next to your pillow or Bible or Quran. He then is a good guest in your home to learn lot of courage, wisdom and strength to bring about a change in society , which is for the better.
As though he is still alive: The clarity of his speech, his focus, his commitment, his articulation - This is a wonderful interview and I am always grateful to know more about Paul Robeson. He speaks of his son, his daughter-in-law, his wife, his education, his travels, his singing engagements and how the government was constantly/ repeatedly attempting to impede, impair and curtail...but he was not, he never made remarks in a defeatist tone. Just as I had imagined that he would be in his older age. I heard many of his comments from recordings when he was younger nad he was written about quite a lot back when. Thank you for the upload.

Didn't know the connection between Paul Robeson and Robeson County before listening. The incident with the "North Carolina Indians we've been hearing about" was when the Lumbee defeated the KKK in January 18th, 1958 and drove them from the county all together (just 3 weeks before this interview).

Amy, you touched me, thank you. I'm his niece, by his wife, my aunt Eslanda. Her brother, and my father, Frank Goode followed them, in Dec.1934, inspired by their praising Russia. My father had lived in the UK for over a decade, and he loved to travel. Little did he know - his travels, and his freedom stopped right then. He accepted the invitation to work for Rus. sports, for the time the Robesons toured the world, and longer, while the family ( including my grandmother, also Eslanda) settled in the UK, where PR played Othello, for 8 years. Father was trapped, treated somewhat as a celebrity, but stripped of his US passport by KGB. My father was a very deep, widely educated man, inspired and humbled by his kin. He was committed to not endanger Paul's situation by his "collaboration"with the SU. He chose to live distantly from Moscow, not to participate in anti Amer. propaganda. He declined to join the CPSU, but had to accept the Soviet citizenship. He watched carefully, that our mutual residing in Moscow during summer 1958, as his travels to Moscow every time the Robesons visited the SU - were unnoticed by press. I remember us leaving the Metropol hotel after them, in the same direction, to his concert in Luzhniki, sitting not as guests, but as regular audience. At night, in a hotel, PR with me on his lap, sang to me "sleep, my baby, my curly headed baby...". After my father's death in 1967, I, then a student, was "advised" to not continue corresponding with my cousin Paul Jr. There wasn't a chance to disobey - the letters wouldn't pass the "iron curtain" anyway. Only in 1988, at the US Embassy the Embassador announced that the time had changed, and I, as a daughter of the good Am.citizen, and a niece of a true Amer. hero P.Robeson - could claim my Amer. citizenship, even though dual citizenship was not allowed by the Soviet Constitution. He showed me the agreement between the US and Soviet gov. of M.Gorbachev to allow "children of Americans, who lived and died in the SU to carry dual citizenship".
The rest is history. I've been living in the US since. Now I had to be quiet, in the 90s. I went "to visit", and never returned. They kept my position for me for 4 years ( I worked at one of the most ideological, first international Peoples'Friendship University). Any confession and sharing in media could hurt my family and close friends in Russia. I was open only with my students and faculty at Lincoln Univ., where I taught for 9 years. One of my courses was "Afr. Amer. international experience,".
I'm retired now, and have been hiding from the crazy Corona situation in the US - in the far corner of Turkey. No, I didn't know better in March, going for 2 wk vacation. With mandatory self-isolation, return ticket cancelled, airports in lock down - I ended up just sitting here and waiting. And time just crolls. The pandemic isn't about to go down. I can't believe I've become a resident of T., had to apply after 3 months.
I hope to have entertained you. With PR only son's death it's only his childless granddaughter Susan. The great line will end. I was happy to see, that my brilliant aunt, to whom PR was much obliged for love, wise, sober management adding to development of him into what he became - was finally recognised in full sense of the word. And she, through her beloved brother Frank ( brother John died childless), has me, her niece and namesake (at some periods - a spitting image of her), and my son, her grand nephew, and his 3 children, her great-grandnephews and g.grandniece. Not blood related to great PR, they'll carry the family legend farther.

What a fascinating interview with Paul Roberson with KPFA radio. It gives one a look into the late fifties world of global white supremacy and original people who fought to support our quest to live as human beings. A very interesting look at moderators during this period, and the sterile position taken when not informed on resources Paul took to support original people. Wasn't aware Firestone controlled Liberia during this time.

I first heard his name PAUL ROBESON , FROM the mouth of Mohammad Ali. When in an interview he said this type of persecution of minority members , is not new, Adam Clayton Powel and Paul Robeson were persecuted by this government as I am being PERSECUTED. It was then I read in details about them.

This was recorded in 1958. It is regrettable that TODAY (2020) a black/1st Nation person living in the United States of America can express some of the sentiments and feelings that Mr. Robeson had then. Certainly the fact that no matter how accomplished you are as a black/1st Nation man/woman, you are meant to feel "less than" in a system that still promotes the philosophy that holds one man superior and another inferior.
The division you speak of has been/still is perpetrated by the Capitalist Class Against The Poor & Toiling Masses.

This is such an interesting interview. Paul is laying out the square root of injustice and problems facing African Americans in the United States at that time (which are still relevant today) yet the interviewers are more obsessed with cornering him on being a Communist sympathist.

Yes. Most likely never will be, though. Even if it were, would the students know who he was? Who can explain the overall context to them? Come to think of it, do students nowadays stumble upon knowledge of him; are they even allowed to stumble upon knowledge at all? What I mean by my questions is that there was a time when I had never heard of Paul Robeson but I stumbled upon knowledge of him just because I knew about 1930's theater which I knew about through a sort of cultural osmosis.....there used to be a time when people just knew about this stuff....it also helped that teachers used to be able to talk about anything they wanted to.......at least mine did.

I have only just found out about him and that's only by chance because an elderly man I care for, who has Alzheimer's, just happened to start telling me about his favourite singer - Paul Robeson. So I was looking for his music to play to him and am now learning about this great man.
It is necessary for the US to write Paul Robeson out of its history -- he challenges the Lies that are repeated endlessly.
It definitely is possible to stumble across him on the internet, but it doesn't seem very likely. As an example, I'm 23, into old music and left -wing politics and to my shame had not heard of him until very recently. More people need to start talking about people like Paul so this becomes much more likely
