Guys, I just wanted to say that I admire Microchip for doing this video response. The CEO himself have called Dave and thanked him for the product review he did. Now that's first class customer service! :) Two thumbs up, Microchip. Making mistakes isn't important, learning from them is! Way to go, indeed. Arye Segal.
my level of respect for this company went up a million times because of this video. i don't think there's any other big company that would make a video like this.
I wasn't sure whether I should start with AVR, or PIC. This video sealed it. The fact that you guys have enough of a sense of humor to laugh at yourselves, makes you a company I want to deal with.
i think it's very brave that you made this reply video. I lost my spare pickit2 and ordered a spare pickit3 now.... I sure hope it supports the external programming app now.
I think I had this meeting when I was at some other company. This explains why I go out of my way to not buy things with 1) subscriptions to get fixes for bugs 2) software based on free tools repackaged for a purchase fee to get a new fancy logo splash screen 3) coffee makers with locked in pods 4) cars/electronics that are not repairable 5) printer ink beyond 5$ a unit 6) razors 7) fpga's with overpriced IP 8) electronic things without somewhat available schematics 9) things with copy protection that is not easily removed 10) things that are obviously designed to use the support dept for additional revenue 11) food that contains GMO 12) things with dongles 13) and my favorite software you have to buy _and_ subscribe to use
Good for you guys for being geeks all the way!!! I have been working with your products since 1997 and Im still a huge fan! And for what its worth I love all my PIC programmers but the PM3 Ive gotta say I love the most!
I bought pickit 3 many years ago but have never used it. After seeing the EEV blog video & now this video - is it worth my time to hook the unit up & start using it? I'm confused having read the comments. Is there a step by step easy guide to go regarding the software to use / update & all should be well? Perhaps a TH-cam vid?
I'm in the middle of deciding which product to start with. Thank goodness I've seen the review and response. I'm definitely going the ARM route with JLINK EDU and Texas Instruments.
Good choice! I am just doing a project on dspic33, after using cortexes for a while. I am aging at 10x speed. Half my hair is gone already, after just a week.
FYI it's 2024 and I bought a Pickit3 (I know the updated model exists. I don't have ready access to buy it here). My entire reason for buying this device over a generic was literally this video. You guys are awesome.
@@MicrochipTechnology wow you guys replied. This video is 14 years old haha. Awesome support. The product is pretty great too. Flashed an EEPROM and it was easy enough.
help me out.. mplab x says "The target circuit may require more power than the debug tool can provide. An external power supply might be necessary. Connection Failed." have any idea..
+Shahe Ansar I got it working with the help of a standalone programmer but I want to use the go-to function. Is there a solution...Anyways thank you for your reply
Thanks for the reply. Solved my problem by reverting PICkit3 to MPLAB mode with MPLAB IDE v8.70 then upgraded with MPLABX v3.61. PICkit3 now connects smoothly including MPLAB IPE v3.61. I know now where to ask for help, thanks again sirs.
amazed by the quality of your response. top marks. instead of just the standard corporate route of writing a text statement disputing facts or apologising and promising to do better, you do *this* - along the way saying Yes, we admit we got it wrong; Look what we're doing to fix it; There are a couple of things you didn't understand; we care and we're listening. and we get it. this is like a textbook wet dream case study for that new breed who advise businesses on how to adapt to social media.
Kudos to Microchip for this video response. They went further than any company to address a bad review of their product. Although giving their reasons for the design seemed a little unnecessary, its understandable. They wanted to defend their reasons, seemingly not for redemption of their ego, but to stress their design was not profit margin based. "fixing" the led's is over and above what I have come to expect from any company. Though, I just bought a pickit 2, for the logic analyser.
I have the circuit, pickit 2 and MPLAB IDE. It was fine for programming but MPLAB sucks (lot of features those all modern IDEs have are missing). I decided to try MPLAB X and pickit 3... hm it was surprised how buggy it is! sometimes it loses device ids sometimes it doesn work al all. Pickit 3+ MPLAB IDE was also buggy. I was not able to program the device. maybe lvp issue i don't know but pickit2 able to do this. So i'm still using pickit 2 + it's standalone program and other IDE for writing the code to have as minimal auto-completion and mplab ide only for debug purposes. Very confusing. Next time i will think properly before doing such experiments and trust the microchip.
I love the spirit of the video specially if those are the actual employees (I'm pretty sure thy are). Too bad it seems they still missed their target after all this. Based on comments I guess PicKit 2 it is.....
great :D Im glad you guys at least havent lost your humour during development of the PicKit3 ;) .. But to be honest, I never used the PicKit2 so for me the PicKit3 just fits my needs.
At least, you guys have humor :-) What's about a PICkit 3 programming software with this fine "auto program" feature like for PICkit 2? That would be neat!
wow thats the best response they could ever make! Its funny but at the same time says that they admit the screw up and are really trying to fix it. Professional looking video too!
Update - "PICKit 3 Stand Alone Programmer Application v1.0 Released - Wednesday, February 02, 2011 2:11" for something that Mike had "almost done" 2+ years ago... ugh, punch to the stomach for my misplaced respect. Quick to a response video, but obviously implementing the changes isn't a priority
Hi guys, I started off straight into the pickit 3 and honestly I find it amazing. Why do guys hate it so much, I mean OK i never use the programmer to go feature ... right... but just clicking the Program icon in MPLAB is pretty fantastic fro me considering that I was used to using the JDM type programmers and WINPIC. After watching Dave's EEVBLOG #39, I bought both the pickit 2 and 3 because I needed to use some chips not supported by the pickit 2, but I enjoy the pickit 3 to the max, I haven't used my pickit 2.
If Microchip shows serious commitment to supporting Free Source tools (Linux), I may cancel my move to AVR. I do not run and will not run Windows at home. Great response, Microchip. Now, hold the promises.
I work for Microchip and I can tell you with total conviction that it is the best company I've ever worked with during my 30 years in the industry and almost 7 years with the company.
Com'n guys. You sell products because people like us buy it. If your new product under performs or is in any way slightly inferior to the product its replacing then you guys have to rethink your strategy and FIX it !
pretty sad/bad, but I understand you are trying to make a point! Still funny tho. Add features/function and make profit by increasing unit volume sales.
Awesome video response guys, hilarious!
My hats off to you all.
Dave.
They have a sense of humor; that's honorable.

Haha love the awkward high five change to fist bump
This is every IT meeting of my life. Action-packed drama for IT professionals.
I wasn't sure whether I should start with AVR, or PIC. This video sealed it. The fact that you guys have enough of a sense of humor to laugh at yourselves, makes you a company I want to deal with.
How does this.. answer anything?
It does in a way. Cannot point on it thou.
Goddamn it.... D. Head came to work for my company.
4 plus years on guys and your PICKIT3 still sucks. For the most part EEVblog #39 is still true. Regrettably.
Nice to see a company engaging the customer base and not sending a C&D. Also A+ for not taking yourselves to seriously.
This video just earned you another subscriber, and a sale for a Pickit3!
Totally awesome! I love the ending. Cool to know the company has such a sense of humor.
i think it's very brave that you made this reply video. I lost my spare pickit2 and ordered a spare pickit3 now.... I sure hope it supports the external programming app now.
There's a Mr.Head in every company, always the one with the MBA.

very classy, microchip. very classy, indeed. :)

3:31 What's up with Mr. Head's tie? Looks like he took some tie-agra.
The Dilbert tie :D Nice touch!
Epic way to support your end users! Microchip FTW
If I ever start a company... I'm going to take MicrochipTechnology as a role model of sorts... I wish more companies were like this!!!
I'm in the middle of deciding which product to start with. Thank goodness I've seen the review and response. I'm definitely going the ARM route with JLINK EDU and Texas Instruments.
How did that manager get the same script my managers used?
gotta love the dilbert tie !!
I love it. A company with a sense of humor. Thanks Microchip.
Thanks. This Clip saved my afternoon :D Still better acting than Twilight ;)

Great! Always feel free to reach out if you have any questions or more feedback, we're here for you!
perfect answear tks to internet and EEVblog for his incredible knowlegd and help to understand things
help me out..
mplab x says
"The target circuit may require more power than the debug tool can provide. An external power supply might be necessary.
Connection Failed."
have any idea..
+THULASI RAM Use another psu, don't plug in the one with the pickit
+Shahe Ansar I got it working with the help of a standalone programmer but I want to use the go-to function. Is there a solution...Anyways thank you for your reply
THULASI RAM Get a linear voltage regulator
+Shahe Ansar Sure I will give it a try....thank you..
THULASI RAM Don't sweat it
because of this video I will now have to burn my Arduino and AVRs and spend all my money on PICs
sometimes you have to love sarcasm
"Engineers work in the dark anyway"
Classic!
I still only have Pickit II and didn't know what the fuss was about :)
Bought a PICkit3, installed MPLABX V3.61 and XC8 V1.42 on Windows 10 64-bit, why PICkit3 always says "connection failed"? Help please.
Hello Pedro. We don't provide technical support via our TH-cam channel. Please go to support.microchip.com to create a support ticket.
Never expect something like this from a company like Microchip...
They just prove they have soul...
So David Jones of EEVblog pretty much wrote the script for this video?
Proof a company actually listens to it's customers, THANK YOU!
WOW. Genius PR move. I now have lots of respect for Microchip because of this.
It was a great video and my PICKIT 3 is still on my desk even though I have the PICKIT 4, and yes the 3 still does the work great!
I think Mr.Head previously worked at Agilent
Mr. Head's voice is reminiscent to that of Louie C.K.
And even now the standalone app is the same and hasn't been updated for new chips.
I love the Dilbert tie at 3:31
Wow. I'm starting to love this company now.

Was this video created for Mr Dick Head? Because I don´t get it, where exactly did this video addresses EEVblog #39?
Thanks to Dave Jones' EEVblog for the excellent video and to Microchip for actually listen and do something.
This is absolutely amazing you guys have earned my respect, this is true commitment.
Awesome. Just ordered a pickit! Won't tell you which though.
Great response!!!!... but we still want the logic analyzer!!!! Great video Microchip!!!!

Way to have a sense of humour about this.

HaHaHaHa, that was great damage control! I'm gonna buy one of these units, only because Mr. Head was let go.
Can we put these engineers to work on the healthcare exchange website? Microchip always rocks!
Hahaha, oh wow..... A totally unexpected response in this form is awesome. Props, Microchip! Never thought I'd say that...!
Love the parity! Only Microchip could pull this off!
This video is amazing, they even have cricket noise as in Dave's video. They are actual employees. Haven't seen such video from any other company....
Finally saw Dave Jone's video. Nice response.
At least, you guys have humor :-) What's about a PICkit 3 programming software with this fine "auto program" feature like for PICkit 2? That would be neat!
The greatest redemption arc in youtube history?
wow thats the best response they could ever make!
Its funny but at the same time says that they admit the screw up and are really trying to fix it.
Professional looking video too!
Dr. Head would be the ideal candidate for managing our Camacho Memorial Hospital.
Do I need still to connect this crap to MPLAB?
Update - "PICKit 3 Stand Alone Programmer Application v1.0 Released - Wednesday, February 02, 2011 2:11"
for something that Mike had "almost done" 2+ years ago... ugh, punch to the stomach for my misplaced respect. Quick to a response video, but obviously implementing the changes isn't a priority
One thing's for sure ... I'm glad this group went the engineering route and didn't try making it in Hollywood!!
For you Bard I've got five!!!
Which movie tell me?
Bravo! An extremely well produced satire dealing with a very real corporate F*!*!*ckup!

wtf microchip seriously? you're fireing mr. Head because of that? i think despite everything he is still a good guy who tries his best
OK, now I have to go an buy one...
Hahaha, This is gold! I just got a PicKit 3 and I'm happy with my purchase!
After watching this, I'll always think "Dick Head" when I see "MBA"!
...wait, I was already thinking that :P
Great humour & video :-)
Golf clap! Well done guys, this is how business should be done!
- But Mr Head our customers really use that feature on Pickit 2 , this would make Pickit 3 MORE EXPENSIVE with LESS FEATURES !
- EXACTLY!
Awesome!!! I suppose there is some truth in this response ... but I appreciate the sense of humor. Microchip makes great products -- keep it up!
lol, awesome. Kudos to the Marketing team. Or whoever came up with this response.
Well I love my PICKIT3 !!
Great video !
I assume that no Microchip Engineers were harmed during the filming.
;-)
Microchip is obviously a special company, given this reply :)
Seems like a pretty funny way to say they think they addressed most peoples concerns.
You guys are fantastic, enough said.
I've got to get one of those Microchip T-shirts......
I learned more here than in my mba
i just got my new Pic Kit 3 yippy!!
i think il make the transition from Atmel to Microchip!
Kudos to Pickit for making this video. I know im late to the party here and most of you are probably dead by now..but KUDOS anyway!
I work for Microchip and I can tell you with total conviction that it is the best company I've ever worked with during my 30 years in the industry and almost 7 years with the company.
I wonder if these problems still exist on PICkit 3.
Com'n guys. You sell products because people like us buy it. If your new product under performs or is in any way slightly inferior to the product its replacing then you guys have to rethink your strategy and FIX it !
Just ordered one:) My icd2 is dead ... may it RIP.
The movie was a really cool idea.
I kinda feel bad if someone actually lost their job over this but really if you let out something that terrible you have to see it coming
What is this circus...? You MUST listening what EEVblog says, because he is smart guy.
pretty sad/bad, but I understand you are trying to make a point! Still funny tho. Add features/function and make profit by increasing unit volume sales.
I just sent my pickit 3 back to Mouser.
