The students are sooo lovely!! I hope I can visit again soon. I love the painting by Kulha, of the praying woman. When I have money I will buy it, unless it's already gone by then....

Ahh, love it!The Snowland Art School adopted a cat from my organisation 'Chengdu Animal Rescue', and we had him shipped over to the school! Then they did charity collaboration with us, and donated some profits to our cause. Great to see an interview / learn more about them

Good on the teacher from Canada for helping Tibetan Women, probably another life path for them. Tibetan women in Qinghai are very hardworking, but life for them is tough, because they have to do almost everything in a family.

Hi alpha. I am copying and pasting the notification I had but it seems that the reply you are referring to has disappeared and also I cant find any of your comments or replies here. But for the sake of informing the audience I am copying and pasting it here. I do not know how long the reply was, but this is what is left in my notification.
alpha shanahan replied: "The Truth Seeker yes, i was a bit concerned when she started talking about art history. As if the only history in art is that on which Da Vinci was a part of. Tibetan culture and art is very rich. ..."
If the world is so ignorant it is time to do some research on what Tibetan Tanka (Thangka) paintings are and how they are made. They are unique in the world and the process is also arduous. It is also a very ancient tradition. It is sad there is NO intention in keeping this/these tradition/s alive but to replace with something completely alien this ancient civilisation. Next, bring Jesus to the Tibetans. Why not Jesus as it is the world's most followed religion, and all of world's wealthiest, prosperous countries are Christian. How sad it is. But if Chinese build roads, rail and send Tibetan kids to modern schools in Tibet it will be called cultural genocide by the west and the Church.

What I don’t understand is why is it that there is NOT ONE Canadian opening an art school in one of the Canadian reserves to teach our young Aboriginals art... yet we are in China helping the Tibetans with free education for 5 years.. and what makes even less sense is that you are begging for money to support your own agenda, not those of the Tibetans... it’s arrogance to think that you can teach those with 2,000 years of history more than you on how to live ...
Nomadic Tibetans have their own lifestyle, it would be inhumane and undemocratic to try to transplant them into western style of living... (these are young adults who are used to the Tibetan nomadic ways, how well do you think they will adapt if you put them in New York for example to teach art... normal immigrants take approximately 10 years before they are used to the new way of life, and these are people from Italy or Greece ie western countries ... )..if you are Canadian do you know the story behind residential schools...
In Canada, it’s against the law to take even a frog or a bird from its normal habitat and domesticate it at home, yet you are taking humans away from their historical culture and way of life and try to cookie cut them into western ways.. it’s a crime.. leave them alone.. the western way is good for western people, it’s genocidal to try to force them into the western ways... if they want to live the western way, let them apply to immigrate to Canada and let them be Canadians like other immigrants..

I understand your frustration with the situation for aboriginals in Canada. But I don't think this is the right place to take that complaint. Do you mean that the one Canadian woman who has lived in tibetan areas for the majority of her life, has married a tibetan man, and lives permanently, and happily, in China should leave it all and fight for the oppression of aboriginals in Canada? A culture she knows nothing about? Isn't it better to highlight this problem in CANADA and not in China? Both me and Kristel are based in China. I'm sure it would be better for you to turn to Canadians who are actually in Canada. Maybe your local community? What are you, as a Canadian man, doing for the aboriginal population? If you are doing something great, then maybe you can inspire more people in your area to do the same.
I don't know if you forgot my comment - but this it not some sort of "white man's burden". Kristel fought for social justice when she was in Canada, but she left at 17. So you mean because tibetans have a long history, all of it is good? All the traditions? Do you agree with child marriage?
Most tibetans today do not live like they did 2000 years ago. Should they stop having running water? Stop driving cars and motor cycles? Stop using western medicine? Should all their cell phones and computers and all other electric devices be taken away? Maybe all the improvements that has been made in eg. tibetan medicine the last 2000 years, should also be forgotten? Maybe all the new changes in monasteries, e.g. that in some monasteries nuns are now also allowed to debate, should be taken back too? Cultures change. And they should embrace positive change, regardless of how old the culture is.
Kristen is motivating young artists to follow their dreams Especially young girls, who are otherwise not seen as very importans, and always as inferior. Do you actually mean that women are inferior to men? Or what's your point?

      Miriam In China
My point is very simple - don’t interfere and try to change other cultures thinking that the western way is the only way. The residential schools is AN EXAMPLE. What happens when we try to change the way of life of other cultures with western ideals always turn into disasters.
What works for the west does not necessarily means it’s good for other cultures. We have to let them decide.. it’s arrogance that we want to decide for them. If you think that Tibetan child marriage is subjugation of women, you can’t go in there and try to change a whole way of life for the Tibetans because you disagree with the way they do things.. AS AN EXAMPLE, what about male circumcision? Don’t you think that’s cruel to little male babies... ..why don’t we stop that.. because it’s practiced by major religions, nobody would dare to challenge it, but we feel so superior by condemning the little poor Tibetans and their savage ways... show some respect to the Tibetans..please..

      Miriam In China
I have been involved with social work , always volunteered, and with different cultures.. and I can certainly attest to the fact that white people have different aspirations than Chinese people and in turn both are also not the same as what Aboriginals look for.. and what is interesting is that we are all Canadians... of course there are common denominators but I think we all start from a different launching pad.. and there are also generational gaps within the same cultures.. ..
I work with a lot of single moms.. some as young as 14... and 95% of the father’s are dead beat dads who do not support the child financial or spiritually. .. there are many child brides in North America but somehow it’s acceptable....and legal... but I can tell you one thing.. they are all live in penury with very little support..and many in abusive relationships.

Yes, absolutely! It is also sad to hear from another foreigner asking you to voice to your concerns to your own Canadians rather than here. I am not going to reply point by point for the response you received and you have answered a few in return. Yes we go there with white Christian moral authority to civilise the uncivilised even though the Chinese and those who lived in the periphery of ancient China had their own way of lives in comparison to what we have here. If any westerner to justify feminism, liberalism, arts and culture to the ancient Tibetans, they they should agree with the Chinese that they saved Tibetans from serfdom, and also agree with teaching Chinese and Chinese culture to the Tibetan as they lived side by side for millennia long before these do gooders arrived there. If these foreigners do not agree with the Chinese govt then these are the most hypocrites I have ever seen.
I have seen my uni evangelical classmates travelling as far as Mongolia to spread the message of the Gospel to civilise and save the Mongols going to hell. I still have their video with me. First they befriend them using their shyness, trust with strangers, kindness then learn the language and art. Most pathetic way was to transform was to transform Mongolian Buddhist imagery with Christ. Their mantras, chants and prayers were changed to accommodate Jesus instead of Mongolian deities. Yes we helped them to transform their way of life to modernity, and 'what is wrong with that'
