It’s funny, when these ads used to come on TV back in the day I was annoyed by them and hated it, now 40+ years later I’m actually seeking them out and watching them deliberately for the nostalgia.
I agree with you there. I used to have waiting for the commercials to end to watch a TV show or a movie. These commercials bring back a lot of pleasant memories
Jan. 1978. Star Wars was still huge as was DISCO. Saturday Night Fever was either HUGE or about to be. As was the soundtrack. Billy Joel was either or about to be huge with The Stranger LP. And "Just the Way You Are". Saturday Night Live was huge as well. In another 6 months ..."Grease" opens and dominates the summer box office (and radio) as well as National Lampoon's Animal house. Donna Summer was having hit after hit around this time and so was Abba. Love Boat was on Saturday night . KISS was a thing and a new band called Van Halen was getting a lot of notice.
I am glad I was born 1960, I got to watch all the old ads on TV when new, as well as the shows and movies. TV ads were entertaining during 1960s-1980s. Many had jingles, and some told brief storylines. I remember many of the ads. Different deodorants seemed to be advertised alot, as well as gum brands and coffee. I have not seen ads of coffee brands, deodorants, or gum since the 1980s.
I wish the makers of commercials today had the courage to break away from the pack to produce retro looking AND sounding ads like those of the 70s. Our generation would eat them up. :)

Connie Needham from Eight Is Enough in the Noxzema ad. Jill Whelan from The Love Boat in the M&M's commercial. Cheryl Ladd from Charlie's Angels in the Ultra Bright ad. She had replaced Farrah Fawcett a few months prior in 1977.
It's interesting to see the product selling trends through the years .The 70s and 80s were about feminine hygiene , aspirin, cold medicine, constipation relievers, floor wax, under arm deodorant , laundry detergent , hardware store products , car tires and batteries
Today its trash like ambulance chasing lawyers...meds than can kill you..and ads you need hearing aids after they air..why I stopped watching trash TV..
I just watched this show, The intro was missing, there was no Top Ten, that surprised me, and I'm also surprised in the commercial breaks of this that Dick Clark did not do a product plug at The AB podium between breaks.
THE AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS BACK WHEN WE HAD TALENT IN MUSIC MUSICIANS SINGERS THAT PLAYED INSTRUMENTS AND WROTE THEIR OWN SONGS REAL VOCALS NO AUTO TUNE NEEDED SELLIN SEX SEXUAL PERFORMANCE NEEDED REAL TALENT SPOKE FOR ITSELF
Commercials today target market the dumbed down. Its an easy sell. They are all hard in-your-face, loud obnoxious hip hop infused. All the same...all unintelligent garbage. Bring back the days od soft, alluring, romantic sells. Simply more creative and intelligent.
That's Laraine Newman, doing her best Weekend Update reporter voice, narrating the Washtub ad. The woman in that Maybelline ad looks oddly like Princess Di.
But she was doing commercials after Gilligan's Island was cancelled. She was doing the tv series Dallas at the time, so had to turn down the offer to star in Gilligan's Island. She stated that she made more money being a tv spokesperson than the salary she made on Gilligan.. Vivian Vance also stated she made more money selling Maxwell House Coffee on tv than in her I Love Lucy days.
God! I loved the girls hairstyles back then. So cute and natural. No ugly black marker tatoos back then. That Tickle commercial is so cute. Cheryl Ladd. Melody the dingy blonde from Josie and the Pussycats. 1970.
Michael, if you ever get any 1980-87 ABC episodes of (American Bandstand), let me know, I would love to watch it originally since it was so horribly edited on (VH1's Best Of American Bandstand), they only aired half hour edited selected episodes from as far as I know from The 60's, 70's, and 80's to 1985, I think June 15,1985 with Bon Jovi was the highest they got up to. I wouldn't mind seeing original Syndicated episodes of (The New American Bandstand) 1987-89 either, as well as The USA Network 1989 version when they had it outside Universal Studios Hollywood.
One guy on eBay recently had a bunch of episodes from the USA version, but due to my current stock and the bidding price, I decided to pass. Next time, I might consider a bit more.
I just posted the October 16, 1982 episode on Dailymotion from its original version. With the exception of Rate-a-Record, all songs are by Hall & Oates.
The reason I want to see The USA Network version is because I want to see if they were still doing Rate A Record, Top Ten, Spotlight Dance, Video Showcase, I don't know why it was taped outside, it should've been inside, outside makes you think of a MTV Spring Break Special from The late 80's.
Michael I'm trying to find the episode from 10/16/82 with Daryl Hall and John Oates AB episode you put up on Dailymotion, but I don't see it, are you sure you put it up there? all I see is Quark, Head Of The Class, and The Alvin Show, is there a problem here?
I have another question, according to TV.com I can't believe the show was preempted many times for ABC Sports and Specials, "Did that ever aggravate any of you fans of this show knowing it would not be on for a few weeks?" what did Dick Clark say in the show when (American Bandstand) was going to be preempted and wouldn't return for a few weeks?
I wasn't even born until 1985, but I would had written to ABC to reschedule to Sunday morning (forget Saturday Night because of course the "Fever" was at its height back then!) I would actually have pre-empted some of the cartoons since in those days, the new episodes always aired during September-November or December, followed by reruns during the rest of the year.
6:18 SNL's Laraine Newman on the voice-over for Wash Tub face wash. 01:26 Dick Summer was a great v/o artist and disc jockey. 7:19 This 3 Musketeers jingle is really fun and memorable.
In the absence of McDonaldland ads or toy commercials, would I be correct in assuming these ads aired during the ABC Afterschool Special? They definitely seem more geared toward the 10-20 year old set
@Frank Silvers I was born in 1982, so I grew up in the late 80's to the turn of the millennium. It was a great time, but you're right, way too cynical. That's why I was obsessed with the 70's. Too bad TH-cam wasn't around. I would of loved watching these old videos

It's called nostalgia. I'm pretty sure most people were annoyed when commercials came on, especially their favorite show.

Remember these commercials, like yesterday, but it was, yesterday year.
I like how simple the commercials were back then. I was just a little kid, but remember most of them.
These commercials were 3 weeks prior of the blizzard of 78
I remember that storm back east.
Got that storm on old 8mm film

Yup doing commercials was a good way to cement your name into stardom… unless, of course, you fail. Lol
The introduction of Starburst. They originally came in white packaging, and had a lime flavor instead of cherry.
The Cover Girl ads with the lovely Cheryl Tiegs is my favorite!
All those oranges and lemons flying upwards without any cgi - how?!
