I was a bad IC . Coding and concentrating to become expert is not my cup of tea. So i became manager and its been great. I help people who want to succeed and the pay is way better. Its a win win

I think that despite not having any interest in management, a lot of Senior IT employees accept the offer of taking up the managerial roles; just to avoid getting replaced by technically highly-skilled freshers.

      @rahulkrishna9375 ปีที่แล้ว +30

True. I’m 5 years into my career and always wanted to move to Management because of better job security (debatable) and higher salary. But now I think it’s better to stay in technical or IC role since I think that’s what brings me job satisfaction. I feel like i accomplished something if I solve something technical but I get exhausted within 2-3 meetings a day. Also, I believe if you are in the top 5-10% in your technical domain, you can become a principal engineer or something and that gives you more edge than a management role. Managers are easily replaceable but replacing a principal role is difficult

Now days in Agile world every one is replaceable. Not replaceable if you have a good hold on the product or domain. We need to be lucky enough to get that experience.

I am very good at individual role . I was promoted to team leader and then manager . I wanted to perform individual role again , but Only after couple of years i have realised that i have been performing well as manager , but i learnt all the skills you mentioned along the way. sometimes the learnings are hard . Assertive communication , there are always people trying to bring you down . All they wait for is you to say something , which they can take up as something . Your videos are showing path.

Very good summary of the key differences between IC and Manager roles. Being in IT management roles for more than 10 years, I find no. 4 never gets easy. Reason being you need to have self mastery in regulating your emotions/feelings when encounter with difficult situation and conversation.

  • @tc322
    @tc322 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Most of the time a resource does not have an option to choose between IC and Manager. Mostly after X number of years you are bound to play a managerial role - if you cannot then you cannot continue. I agree with the managerial skills you said - but the individual gets to know these after they become manager even if they don't want to.
    All the best.

Does all managerial skills can be acquired by training ? I always feel management role is not my cup of tea, but generally the perception in IT industry is once you are 10+ years experience, and if you still are doing an IC role, you are being looked down.
If you are 20+ yrs of experience, they expect you to be in a VP/Director position.
Why a senior IC with good technical skills and product knowledge, who can manage/mentor/guide the team technically is being looked down and not recognized appropriately.
I somehow feel most of the people who move into management role are by force and not by choice, just to show the management they are flexible and it fetches good hike with promotion, even though they don't possess the right skills or mindset/attitude. Another aspect is, after certain point of time, they are scared/tired to keep upto date themslves on latest technologies, so they feel it's better to move to management roles.

I am always enthusiast to be manager but always been low key individual contributor for more than 15 years in tech industry. In my recent experience my colleague who became my lead got me fired for no silly reason. The interesting thing is company still paid me severance and which I negotiated as well to get me 30% more than what they want me to sign on the Release doc.
I am looking forward to be manager, might learn some evil skills as well to have some kind of self-protection we live in this interesting times where we are going to compete with AI and rush hire-fire attitudes set by the FAANG companies.

Don’t know exactly how much pressure a Manager has but as an Individual Contributor since last 13 years, sometimes it seems that at least it’s better to be a manager rather handling 2-3 person tasks alone. I am an SAP Basis HANA Package consultant and always seems to be over a hot wok. It’s like going to a mission everyday which is impossible to handle. 😕

I was an individual contributor n principal engineer for 21 years in product company untill they replaced me with an 8 years experience person. After 21 years if you don't have mgmt experience you will not even get management job position.. india population is big problem, they get 1000 resumes for a single vacant of any position. Besides as manager always puts ball in case of issues to principle engineer.. 21 years I wasted just working harder n harder n management enjoys will all kinds of ESOPs tours n safe politics n jargan talking.. between 12 to 16 years one must find a management position in India.. no one is going to ask after 45 age..

Need to discuss few more aspects such as demand/opportunities of IC vs Manager roles. The probability of getting fairly paid. Flexibility of switching to both roles. I'd say IC role has much advantages unless managerial role is leading you to some exec level OR it's difficult for you to be technical for long term.

I am not really sure how do I get away with this problem. Technical work carried by individual contributor has more hardships n affects health n social life , than developing communication skills to talk to stakeholders to get things going sufficient enough till retirement. Unfortunately the onus on laying of hardwork experience individual contributor is with less experience managers skilled in showman ship in populated countries to survive. So cutting each other's throat is justified .

Hi, I recently made a career switch. I was into BI development project management for 14 years but now moved to IT infra project management role. My manager is about 10 years younger to me and has 7 years of experience in the same company. He is of the assumption that I know our should everything on the planet because of my tenure and I don't how I should tell him that every organisation has its own way of handling projects. Even though we never had any serious discussion about it and we are very nice to each other but I could see the under current. There are no quality or delivery issues until now but he seems to be not comfortable working with me though I do not have any issues working with him. He always escapes any direct or one on one discussion with me where as I like to talk and discuss a lot with my manners about work and any issues. Please suggest your thoughts.

Maybe these points hold good in service based company, but in a product-based company, point #2,4,5 are the sole responsibility of the Product owner, and he is held responsible if the product doesn't revenue/fails if there are production defects, delivery of the features, stakeholder communication to name a few. Managers are mostly responsible for people management activities such as - hiring, appraisals, defending the team, and team motivation

There is dignity of labour in Western companies. My managers who were 60 to 65 years aged were doing the same role for many years.
Here in India, our Labour Laws suck. Companies are not held accountable.
We are made to work for more than 60 hours. If this was in Western countries they would have sued companies.
Our Indian mentality is also to blame. Our peers / managers ask us to put in extra hours. We do not get paid for extra hours.
    They think they rule us.
Our own Indian brethren are harming us than any other.
There is lots of work pressure and they don't take vacations with families. It is showing up in our society, especially in bigger cities.

Start to support proposals, when one of the proposal signed to SOW you request to own the delivery and take tech lead or PM position.
Find your own replacement and let that person take over your current role. At onsite, no one will ask you to change the job until customer closes it. Remember everyone appreciates you for your current role will not let you go. That is for their comfort. DO NOT FALL FOR IT. DO NOT HESITATE TO RELOCATE IF THE EXPENSES ARE COVERED.

In my humble opinion, a people manager will always be a successfull project or process manager as well.
It's really important for a manager to treat all the team members equally. Proactiveness in anticipating worst-case scenarios and taking decisions accordingly are key to leading a team on the whole to success point.
Last but not the least, a manager should connect with each team member individually atleast once in a week informally. He should reiterate every now and then to his team members on their impact of valuable contributions they made towards organisational goals. To put it in simple words, you gotta tell your team members how much value they create for themselves and organization on the whole.
In a nutshell, as a Manager I would want to end up as a Respected manager rather than a liked manager

Treating everyone equally is only in books not in practice. Managers have their own group of liking. People who drink smoke outside offc hours are treated like family. Hard workers are given a tag of loner and in the long run team is left with only timepass employees and not the serious workers.

Have seen some of your videos and they are really good. How do you manage a team- where you dont have resources direct reporting, because reporting lies with Senior manager. But you are a Project Manager and have to manage this team. And resources dont take your commands seriously or dont follow you. How do you manage these situations? @CareerTalk

    • @CareerTalk

Hi Keerthi, In such situations...(1) The Senior Manager has to empower you by speaking to the team and setting expectations and also needs to give you some on the ground powers like managing appraisals of the team etc (2) You need to help the team members on the ground on the day to day problems they face (people generally respect you or listen to you only when they feel that you are there to help them).
You may already be doing some of these things. Since I don't know the specifics of your situation I am speaking generally. Hope this helps in some way.
