I listened to the Children of the Unicorn album so much as a kid, I sadly ruined the CD. I have the lyrics to the Unicorn memorized, when I was young I used to sing it to my great grandma whenever she asked. Many good memories
had no idea the Irish Rovers did this song and it was only 10 years after the first version came out I gotta say that both of them have their charm ....wonder why they never play this one at christmas on the radio

I never realized that The Irish Rovers did a copy of this! The very first record I ever owned was The Irish Rovers "The Unicorn Song/Black Velvet Band" as a 45. The second, The Royal Guardsmen's version of this! Awesome!

I am reading Jeff Shaara's To The Last Man and I includes a lot about the red baron and I have reached the point to where he is about to die. Listening to this song after learning more about the Red Baron is really awesome. To those who like history, I recommend the book.
There is an ongoing historical debate about how the Red Baron met his end - was it the work of a Canadian pilot, an Australian AA battery or an American beagle?

They actually have done two: "Children of the Unicorn" in 1976 ( which has this song on it) and "Songs for the Wee Folk" in 2015. ( I realise that after eight years you may have already found this out, but I couldn't bear to think of you wondering about this and never getting an answer!)
Is this REALLY the first version? I though it was a Royal Guardsmen original. Also there is a Peter Pan Singers recording that's a close copy of The Royal Guardsmen version.

I had no idea the Irish Rovers did this song. After the Royal Guardsman this have to be a great version. Way to bring back the 1960s fun songs.

It was Arthur Roy Brown, a Canadian pilot, and my uncle, who shot down The Red Baron , Baron Von Richthofen., in the first world war.
