    I've found that using a pencil tip moistened with a little water, makes picking up and planting tiny seeds much less frustrating

      I do something similar in my classroom, to assist chubby little fingers. We use a wet toothpick to pick up tiny seeds, and it works fabulously!

    If you pinch your sweet pea seedlings back to first group of leaves they'll get stronger and give more shoots thus more flowers! I love sweetpeas! The scent is heavenly.

    Hi, we are a very mini cut flower farm in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. Love your videos and information! A couple of tips that work for us. We use a popsicle sharpened to a point. Wet the tip and the seed stick until placed on the soil. On sweet peas, we put them out in our unheated propagation house to grow before planting. They do real well in the cold temps even into the 20s. Makes a stronger plant.. Just some things that work for us. Happy Growing!

      I’m getting ready to start some sweet peas and this was exactly the information I was looking for. I have a cold frame we built with cattle panels and 6 mil plastic and my plan was to plant my sweet peas in a winstrip 72 tray and put them out there with a tray greenhouse dome over it for some additional protection. I figured I could just pot them up if I need to and leave them in there between the kale and lettuce patch.

      When do you pinch them?

    • @Tracy-zj4sr
      @Tracy-zj4sr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I pinch when there are 4 leaf sets, or when they’re about 6”-8” tall. I start my sweet peas in ‘root trainer’ seed trays (check out Gardener’s Supply for them) quite a few weeks early, specifically so I can pinch them sometimes more than once, i.e. pinch the firs growth, then two weeks or so later, pinch the dual stems that result from the first pinch. You end up with very full, bushy, tall, bloom crazy plants. Pinch no more than twice or you just stunt them.

    I wintered sowed 2 envelopes of foxglove 2 years ago... Last season (2019) I had soooooo many. It's worth the 2 year wait. It's that feeling you get like when the new tulips come up in spring but better 😍😍😍
    It's much more satisfying to me to grow everything by seed... Well-- almost everything. I also grow around 100 dahlia tubers each year. If all my tubers store successfully-- hoping to plant 300+
    Delphinium can be tricky to winter sow. Though the shorter delphs do very nicely-- easy to start. Snapdragons, Bells of Ireland, Nicotiana, Tall Chinese forget me nots, & my favorite... Larkspur are always a must.

    I will start my winter sowing this weekend. I've had success growing seedlings this way, the key is patience, patience, and more patience! When I tried the winter sowing method for the first time nine years ago, I was checking on the milk jugs every day or two. Then I finally gave up and forgot about them, because I figured it wasn't going to work. However, when the soil temp was warm enough, nearly all (a good 95%) of my seeds had sprouted. I'm in zone 5a and I am still planting lots of different flowers and veggie seeds this way. By the first part of March, I will have milk jugs sitting all over my patio.

      I have never planted from seeds and to try this year. I have foxgloves, hollyhocks, lupine, sweet elysium, irish moss and cosmos. Have you started any of these from seeds? I dont have grow lights so I thought I might try some winter snow. Any advice would be great!

    • @greenthumbelina7331
      @greenthumbelina7331 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wendypalmer7798, I've never planted seeds of Irish moss or foxgloves, but the rest I've had good luck with. One thing I found helpful was, only use a couple pieces of tape to hold the top closed. This way it's much easier to lift the top of the milk jug on sunny days to keep the heat from building up inside the jugs and cooking your seedlings. Also, air gets drawn in at the loosely fitted sides and vents out the open top of the milk jugs, remember to throw the caps away, rain and snow need to get in. Have fun and good luck! I'm curious, what zone are you in?

    Hi, I know this video is 4 years old, but just wanted to add that I think the reason why the sweet peas are so leggy is they need a much deeper pot to grow in as they have very long roots that grow a lot before a lot of the top growth happens. If the roots don't have enough room to grow the top growth will be stringy and week. They shouldn't need help standing up if this is addressed. And will be much, much stronger. Happy gardening.💗

      @@kristyplotecki1862 Perhaps but a gardening channel? One where the person running the channel isn't a professional cook/chef? Martha Stewart isn't a professional chef, but she quite frequently would have a professional either on screen or off screen advising her. Some things regarding food preparation she was trained in, like canning. I watched her make Italian sauce from tomatoes and then watched her do the canning process. Laura (to my knowledge) isn't trained in any of that. Is she competent in the kitchen? Looks that way but I'm a little on the "no" side of watching my favorite gardening channel morph into a quasi-cooking channel. Once in a while? Sure. All the time. Mmmm, nah. Just one person's opinion.

    Another tall spikey flower that you may enjoy - especially for your Moon Garden - would be Night Scented Nicotinia (or Woodland Tobacco). Has huge white tubular flowers that release a wonderful scent at night.
    Also, are the Foxgloves hard to sew in place in Eastern Oregon? Where I live here on the Western side we have always just been able to sew seeds striaght to areas we wany them to grow. Ones that come up in Spring (in other words, reseed themselves)- if not where we want - are always easy to dig up & transplant. But those white ones are going to look awesome in your Moon/White Garden too!!!

    Hi Laura! I absolutely love your videos and you inspire me to try new and creative ideas in my terrace garden! I love the amount of meticulous planning you put into making these videos and editing in old videos from your archives according to relevance. You’re brilliant and you’re truly inspiring a lot of people into getting their hands dirty. More power time you! And so much love from India!

    Thanks for showing your seed starting process. I happy to see what other people do, and what I should expect. In the past I’ve attempted to start seeds but I’ve not had a lot of success. I’m trying again this year because I have lots of pots to fill and would like to have a few pots started from seeds. I’m headed to my garden center to see what I can find.

    Pinch your sweet peas back to the first set of leaves, they will be much bushier and you’ll get three times as many flowers, I know it’s tempting to try and let them grow up the trellis quickly but it is only the beginning of February, there is still lots of time

    You should pinch the tip of sweet peas to make them side shoot. You should get one plant with 3 shoots on each. Leggy is not good. Also sweet peas don't need heat, as you have seen they just grow too fast. Here in England we sew sweet peas in January and as soon as you get r orc5 leaves you pinch tge tip out and you keep them in a cold frame till you are ready to plant out. You can also direct sew about April /May straight in tge soil. They are really hardy

    Love your videos, so packed full of useful info and no fat, all protein talk, if you get my drift. But what I want to compliment you and your husband on is that you two have got the video making down pat. That is a skill in itself. The audio is exceptionally good, and I just stopped at 15:11 to write you because of the fabulous speeded-up soft sounds to go with your fast-forward transplanting of sweet peas. That is some great editing. Also it was funny and heartwarming when he followed you on the long trek from greenhouse to "upstairs" where you germinate seeds under a light. I liked that; it is story telling, it is quotidian non-fiction. so KUDOS on the video-making.

    Starting,foxglove 1st year bloomers,sweet peas,zinnias,hollyhock,cosmos,day lilies,2 kinds,winter sowing for the first time and seedlings in the windows and under lights.Hope the winter sowing goes well been watching many videos.Starting Lisianthus by seed,ordering plugs for next spring.I have learned alot from your channel, been raising vegetable garden and flowers since childhood,not with many seeds though.Looking forward to seedling adventure.Spent a lot of summers traveling, or boating,or trail riding w/my paso fino Julie,so this year I'll be home more.The heat in our area, Springfield, Ohio,humidity can be suffocating, but have alot of trees for some shade.Usually breezy. Growing a lot of milk weed for the Monarch butterflies, could you mention for everyone that can,plant some for them,to keep thier numbers up,been a decline last several years.Every little bit helps.Thank you for all the great information, love watching~Abby in Ohio

    I love lisianthus! Never done from seed but maybe next year. I have limited space for seedlings so can never do all I want. I usually do my perennials after the annuals are done. Still enough time to get them planted and acclimated before the cold weather hits and then they are in place and ready to go for spring.

    Up here in Eastern Ontario Canada, I've started my geranium seeds (red, deep rose and white/pink) and am RESTRAINING myself from starting too much of anything else, since we're months away from being frost-free! But I have my planting calendar all plotted out, and this week, slow-growing torenia (GREAT shade-tolerant annual) and osteospermum seeds are going in - hooray for dirty hands!!!
