He played two roles simultaneously in the Indian Test team during most of his career: one as an opener and one as a no.3 batsman. Those two positions are the toughest in Test cricket. This feat is still unmatched! The way he improved himself and made the selectors pick him for the Indian ODI squad is textbook stuff. And then he scored more than 10000 runs in the ODIs, too! Yes, Steve is right here. He was as important as Tendulkar.

There is no doubt that there was lot more character and grit then than now in players. I only see that grit and determination in only one or two series like Ashes, etc. Another point is that Indian batting lineup is undoubtedly the greatest batting lineup India ever had.

Sachin gave everything to cricket since the age of 16. He deserves to stay away from the game as long as he wants. 90% of people in India picked up bat to play cricket because of Tendulkar. Much as I admire Ganguly for helping create & gel together a great team, I always felt that he was utterly unfair to Laxman by walking in to bat before Laxman in test matches. Dravid-Tendulkar & Laxman at 3, 4 & 5 would have yielded much better results in our tests in the 00-s. Laxman was a far superior batsman than Ganguly in tests.
Once Rahul was on crease, I used to take breaks. Because I was sure he will be batting after my break too. That's the confidence we were having on The Wall. Hit like if agree.
