    To celebrate SysAdmin Day, we created this funny video as a means of paying tribute to all the little things that sysadmins do. Each day of a sysadmin life can be full of frustrating questions from inexperienced computer users who probably didn’t even plug the device into the wall. Much like teaching your parents how to use a computer, it can be a slow and painful process to guide other users as well. Having a network, and your business, run faultlessly requires an awesome sysadmin who will put out the metaphorical, and sometimes, real tech fires. Most users expect their computers to work and only become aware of a sysadmin when problems arise.
    Since computer systems are very complex, having them perform flawlessly is a demanding job. By having a day to appreciate system administrators, we shine a light on all the critical work performed by these skilled professionals. All the little things, like making sure your printer prints, your software is updated, and even fixing all those problems caused by someone else, fall into the realm of the system administrator. When asked how users can make their jobs easier, over a third of system administrators said to reboot the machine before calling the helpdesk.

      Oh exactly same thing happen with me. People used to assume I know everything. FUNNIEST ONE SO FAR (happen years back):- Once my friend's uncle bought a camera from his Europe tour. And they were waiting for me to give some idea about it. In reality, being a poor guy; I never ever touched any digital camera. They simply assume because I was good in computer. Imagine how I handle such luxury stuff and teach them.

      Sysadmins are the ones the deskside techs come and pester with help desk stuff while he is trying to keep 3 servers from falling over, while setting up a new switch. You are right though help desk is certainly a part of it.

      Imagine your dad calling you for this while you have to expand your storage another 16 TB, rebuild the existing RAID array so none of the existing data is lost.
      Your boss is on your ass because this needed to be done yesterday, but one of the drives was DOA, and you are not authorized to use any of the hot spares. Even if you could, they are not the same capacity you need.
      Imagine your mom telling you she's rich while you are on a video call with your colleague trying to fix a time sync issue between two domain controllers that are 10000 apart
      Or having to restore your boss's secretary's mailbox for the n-th time because none of the helpdesk staff are answering or know how to do it despite you explaining it at least 3 times a day to them.
      Imagine fixing a ci-cd server again because the devops guy is on vacation after one developer pushed code to the wrong branch and ruined the last 10 builds
      Being a SysAdmin is not fun when you have to babysit everyone.

    When did Help-Desk become SysAdmin?? I'm a SysAdmin and i work in automation everyday. I never speak to customers nor does my family ever ask me for help. I work my own hours(40), i.e, day or night doesn't matter. The only people I know that work with customers are Tier I, II, and III help-desk.
    Here is something I noticed companies are doing. They will have a Job posted online for SysAdmin and when you look into the responsibilities it has help-desk written all over it. They do this with system analyst/system engineer roles as well. Always read what the job is before you apply and if it requires you to work with customers keep on walking because you will hate that job. Or any Job in IT that requires you to work within a ticketing system.

    • @fahmiirfan6923
      @fahmiirfan6923 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Will Ellison what do you mean by ticketing system?

    • @WilliamEllison
      @WilliamEllison 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Where others in your org can send you a ticket, if they are having trouble. It's what help desk uses when customers send in tickets to the help desk for issues they are having. The whole point of that comment was, if you go work somewhere and the group you are going into functions as a support role for customers, stay away from that Job. Find jobs were you don't have to deal with customers. Start out doing database work or some type of high level programming. Don't go into a support role unless that is your cup of tea. Most Sys admins I know don't work in support roles. They work on the back end of things and never interact with customers. These videos are just another example of fake news. System Admins work on systems, and not with people. The only people system admins work with are either people in his/her group or other tier 4 groups.
      These people are not system admins. They are glorified helpdesk acting like they are system Admins.

      Will Ellison I am working for beckton dickinson in india as a help desk .Yes ,I really hate my job and Its not my cup of tea. ur comment gave me little confident to find better job without supporting roles . But the problem is that i am not good at programming . So really have no idea how to take further step.

    • @WilliamEllison
      @WilliamEllison 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      *deepan dhanapal* Learn Automation first. Meaning find tasks that you do everyday or that others do everyday and Automate it for them. This could be anything. Maybe some business line or person has some mundane task that they have to do all the time. Start with PowerShell and automation. There are many books out there about PowerShell automation. You should learn the basics of PowerShell first then move into automation. Once you learn that you will be well on your way to programming.
      Just because you're in helpdesk doesn't mean you can't impact a business line or group of people in your org. There is much to be done, and most people are lazy. Find yourself a simple project to work on when you have down time at work.

    I see a lot of comments like "Stay away from jobs where you need to interact with customers" and start wondering: Who are these people and what are they working for? Because decent systems administrators never work to build spherical system in vacuum, they do their job to provide services for users, their customers. And once you start hating your users - you've failed at your job.
