I REALLY appreciated this! I've been toying with the SOF, but have been leaning towards wood. Soley because of durability, I have a new point of view!!! Thank you!!! GT
Jeff - great video watch both and I am convinced now!!!! They are great videos on how durable this materil is. You mention the material weights, if you have worries, is it worth going to a heaver material? You mention to use duck tap to get home if hole does happen, would it not be good to use a scrap piece of material and 5 min epoxy to cover? And when you get home what is the proper way to repair the damage? I am very interested in this type of kayak, but was worried they are too delicate.
I believe Jeff uses Polyester on his boats. Though he mentioned the blue boat was coated with Zar Oil Based Polyurethane (no longer available due to VOC compliance). In another video he mentioned using Zar on Nylon skins. Either way, Nylon or Polyester will be plenty strong.
Been boating my whole life, damage would never come from a hit, unless you drop it off your car. Main damage would be from being fully loaded and ramming into a sharp sunken sharp rock. How would this material fair in that case.?
