    I love synthetic reeds. I use Legere at the moment. When I finish practicing and cleaning, the reed goes back on the mouthpiece, and it's ready to go the next day as soon as I finish work. No fiddling around with reeds and ligatures - I can just pick up and play immediately. I find I practice far more regularly when I have fewer excuses for putting it off.

    Great video. I would add that buying a used pro horn is often surprisingly affordable. Used Yamaha 62 alto with older pads is often $1200-1500. Used Yanagisawa A900 same thing. Used Keilwerth SX90 $1650, used Selmer Series II $2650 easily. Used intermediate horns are even better deals. Used Yamaha 52 is often $600, used Yamaha 575 or 475 might be $600-850. Used Yamaha 23 (get the Japanese one) can be as little as $150!! So many pros started out on those or keep a good one as a backup. I usually say budget about +$400 on top of that for a thorough setup and be pleasantly surprised if you spend less than that on repair, unless you buy from a dealer. Still, you end up with a very solid horn for a not terrible price. The key is not to skimp on pad work and fixing mechanical problems. Leaking neck joint is the top problem making horns feel “stuffy” or “resistant” besides pad leaks and loose keywork. If you really fix everything then all of the above horns will play like a dream. Even the YAS-23! Tell your repair shop you want the horn RIGHT not just patched up cheaply. They will be happy and you will be happier when you play it.

    Dr. Wally. I enjoy your "vutorials" more and more every time I watch them. I'm an intermediate saxophonist and I had too much information available to me, too soon, paired with a "mediocre" teacher when I was a novice.
    I consumed a lot of information because my teacher at the time didn't help me understand certain basic elements of saxophoning and took for granted how much I knew, at the onset.
    Had I seen this content a few years ago, it would have saved me a lot of disconcernation. I'm far more sophisticated, these days, in the selection of my sources of information.
    This was not only an entertaining presentation; it was "down to brass tacks", "straight up" truthful and honest! Kudos to you for putting this quality material out there!

    As a keen 2-year intermediate, I have just replaced my Good Student Horn (Trevor James Horn) with a 2nd hand Selmer series II. I didn't need to change, and clearly the limit to my sound is my skill - not the horn. However:- I tried 5 different top range horns (Yamaha Z82; Yanagasawa 991; Trevor James Raw; 2x Selmer). They all felt and sounded very different. I chose this horn because (i) it plays very well - excellent ergonomics, most noticeable on the pinky keys. (ii) Wonderful sound. The horns all sounded very different. I just loved the tone of this horn. (iii) The "difficult" skills become easier. Palm key notes are much easier to get; bottom Bb is easier; altissimo seems a bit closer. My family and teacher could instantly hear the improved tone. It is just nicer to play and nicer to listen to. So a "professional" horn had a lot more impact on my playing experience than I expected!

    Buckle up because this is probably going to be a weird story. My parents rented an alto sax for me in 4th grade with the promise that if I stuck with it for a year or two, they'd buy me a tenor. Well, I stuck with it and they made good on their promise and got me a $200 Whitehall tenor saxophone which I played until I graduated high school. For graduation I asked for a Super Action 80, which I got.....and then never played. Still to this day I have played that Whitehall because it just blows differently than any other tenor that I've played, which, is admittedly not many (probably less than 30 total). So I graduate HS and go to U of I Champaign for music education, flunk out, move back home and stop playing for 10 years. Long story a little bit longer, I started playing again about 10 years ago when I moved into my current area. My Whitehall had been serviced a few times by a local tech since then, but honestly not very well, so I needed a new place to go about six weeks ago when I realized it needed some major repair work. There are NO horn techs that I trust as they have all either left or retired, so the closest place was Saxquest in MO, which is where it currently resides. After doing a ton of research, I'm now almost positive that my "Whitehall" is actually a rather rare 1951 Keilwerth "The New King" series 1. I think that there were less than 1000 of them made. I never knew why I absolutely loved my "junker" horn more than my "super expensive professional horn," and now I do. I'm actually selling the SA80 and having the Whitehall overhauled. I had no idea.....
    Signed, an average sax player for 30 years....but hopefully now getting better because of you, Dr. Wally, and Jay Metcalf, specifically. Thank you for helping reignite my passion for music in a way that I don't know I've ever experienced.

    Of all the sax education sites out there, yours is the only one that has used the word "cobbler". So keep up the good work.
    As for a gear story, my first sax was really old, A King H.N. White. . After some research I found out it was made in Cincinnati in or around 1920s or 30s and the complete production run that season was bought by the US Army and used by their military band---In World War 2!! So my sax went to Europe, and maybe saw some action (and probably had PTSD). By the time I bought it in the early 80s, it was already at least 50 years old. It was hard to play, was kinda leaky and the keys were hard to push. As a result I developed really good air support, (to fill the damn thing) and gorilla grip when fingering. Now I play a pro Yanagisawa, which plays like a dream and is easy to blow and to finger. However my fingering technique still suffers from my first sax. I slam them down hard and squeeze still. If I could shake that habit, I bet I'd play smoother and faster. Still working on it.
    I love it when other players say, "wow what a nice sounding sax you have, what brand is it?" Because unbeknownst to them, they are complimenting ME. That sound was ME not the horn.
    PS. When i got the new horn, I asked for trade in value for the old King. "ZERO" the guy said. "Spray paint it black and mount it on your wall, it will look cool". Instead I donated it to a young high school kid who was really keen to have his own tenor.

    I have a Mark VI tenor 1962 in mint condition, and a Conn Selmer Prelude. The sound is exactly the same. I think that and my fellow musicians say the same. By comparing the two horn, I can see that the Conn Selmer seems to be more solid build. I also had Selmer Super Action 80. I can’t tell the difference between that one and the Conn Selmer. So is Selmer selling the same horn for a difference price. Most of the comparison tests I have seen online are done wrongly. One pitfall is that when you expect a difference you experience a difference.

    • @drwallysax
      @drwallysax  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Expectancy theory (and placebo) is real, to be sure! If both horns are set up well, they really should "feel" different. I've played a prelude, it's a fine student horn - but the key action and response should be considerably better on a good pro horn!

    I just love Your sense of humor, Dr. Wallace. Thumbs up for another great Video.
    There are 2 ways to make a saxophone sound good:
    a) hand it to someone who can play or
    b) practice, practice, practice, patience, practice, practice, tenacity, practice, practice, practice,...
    I've chosen the long way. Pretty much a year ago I started on Saxophone (and with it, on music in general). I knew that the last thing I need was a PRO horn or some fancy bling-bling stuf, but I wanted a good instrument that lasts. So I bought me a YAS 280 students Sax, a dryer, a stand, a comfortable strap and some reeds. That setup lasted for 8 months, until I've upgraded the ligature (a Vandoren Optimum) and now I sound like Charlie Parker! No, of course I don't. I sound exactly like the noob I did before, but I've got a new ligature now. ;)
    Btw: It seems I have no remarkable talent, but I enjoy my journey anyway. I have fun in practice, practice, practice, patience, practice, practice, tenacity, practice, practice, practice,....
    Let's see in some Years, where I'm gonna stand. I'm motivated, but I'm not in hurry.

Speaking Jazz ....personally I dont know about the 5* Otto Link for tenor ? (that seems too small) yet I know my #8 is too big (for me (I got #8s metals for both horns (I know now..why they we so cheap) and the Metal Ottolinks ruin the cork with their smaller ID neck bores) personally I reckon 6* or 7 would be best as far as Ottolink (rubber as well (as 7* seems a bit too much for me (presently) yet hoping to build up that support needed) my feeling is that open stuff is for the blasters ) This new 56 is the best mpc Ive ever played (by far). I love the resistance.. and get some strange inkling.. that my old sax is playing "more like a trumpet " ? ..(a good feeling) I think that feel... and that instant " improvement of tone".. is via the even-ness of the resistance..top to bottom..yeah... Im a fan.. I dont think there is "right".. there is... "what works"... and... "what works better"....and then its "horses for courses" Sirvalorsax (AS) has clearly demonstrated...(ie....smaller chambers (V16 T6 S) effectively reduce the richness and warmth of the bottom end (tenor)... but you gain dividends up top (it seems logical... and thats what I took from all his many mpc reviews) yet his quality of sound (one may fairly describe as phenomenal) seemed very consistent across the board...one might conclude..its dependent on what your after (duh) but..."variety is the spice of life".. "value is subjective".. and yet we are all looking for "what works" .. if one doesnt try new things.. one doesnt really learn a benchmark.. to compare ...its all relative (yet who wants drawers full of mpc?) Interestingly, heavy mass neck screws work NOT because of the weight, but because they help people over tighten their neck tenon, which typically leaks and needs to be properly fit on the majority of saxophones. It’s a duct tape sort of solution that stops working over time but closing that leak does make a difference. And the huge screw head gives you a lot of extra torque to tighten.

    • @drwallysax
      @drwallysax  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the exact reason I bought the "heavy mass" screw! Was easier and faster to tighten (and had pearl inlay....pearl is always nice...). Agreed on all points! But I've never seen Velcro!

    I just came back to playing Sax after 20 years of not playing(I played Sax for 7 years, from 5th grade thru my senior year in High School). When I came back to playing, my first purchase was a very slightly used Yamaha YAS-480. I bought this horn because I knew Yamaha had great quality horns(even the YAS-23 is a great student horn), and I didnt really want to spend to much money at first just in case I couldnt play like I use to(I had my right hand middle finger amputated, hence the reason for me quitting sax). Now, I cant play like I use to, but the love and passion is still there and I have since upgraded to a Cannonball Big Bell Stone Series Raven Alto(which I bought new 09/2020).

    I love the luxury car analogy though. I specifically sought out the YAS 23 used because I'd heard the tone was very middle of the road, and they were easy to work on for techs. I can attest to the former, being that I can get a bright growly jazz bark or a sweet dark tone out of her just as easily. As to the latter, I haven't had to bring it in yet, but will probably do that soon just to get the key work checked, make sure everything's sealing etc.

They sound great and if you are switching saxophones during the course of playing out or practicing they don't dry out or warp when not in use. I wrote to him and asked him to do a blindfold test using a mid-range mouthpiece on a cheap instrument (that he has never seen) and on a top of the range Yani or other big brand (that he hasnt seen) and to film it and comment as he went along. He wasnt prepared to do that!!!! I bought a cheap china horn - paid $400 and it has many physical characteristics of a pro-horn - (He does mention them in his video) and it plays fairly decently. I’m honestly really picky about my reeds. I refuse to play on orange boxes or something similar to that quality. I’ll use royals if I have to, but I don’t really like them very much. My 2 favorite reeds for saxophone are vandoren (Java reds to be specific) and Boston sax shop, they feel really good to me. When it comes to clarinet, I’m even more picky. I’ll only play on either legere European cut, or vandoren V21, depending on what kind of sound I want.

    Love your videos, very informative, and engaging... Mouthpieces have always been a mystery to me. There seem to be so many ideas out there on what aspect of a m/piece effects what aspect of tone and ease of playing, very confusing. Can you simplify this for me/ us? Thanks, Peter.

    • @drwallysax
      @drwallysax  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hey Peter, it's a balancing act - bit of an art, bit of science, and a whole lot of placebo effect. Short answer, the tip opening and facing length determine (in part) the resistance - making a reed feel stronger or weaker. This is also effected by the baffle and chamber/throat. It's hard to simplify, because there's too many variables. Shorter answer - pick a reasonably priced mouthpiece that feels comfortable, and forget about it!

    In the opening theme to your videos, are you using two different horns for the first and second phrases of the song? Are you changing mouthpieces and or emboucher or what? That's a really cool effect.

      Alternate fingering? the D (2nd phrase) I'm using the left side key 2 for the different timbre. Good ear!

      Do you mean the mouthpiece? I've got my own line of mouthpieces, so there's a big conflict of interest there - can't really "review" other mouthpieces!

    I have subscribed to several Saxophone channels. This one, by far, has made me chuckle the most! I appreciate your humor, candor and telling it in sufficently technical jargon while still making it accessible to the average viewer! I, like you, think a good well built student horn will be best for developing good technique. And, that the ligature, while feeling different to the player, really has little effect on the reed if it is sealing it properly. As for reeds. Well, natural material is susceptible to the elements, but with a little work on whittling, I can get most reeds to play for at least a little while. So............is there an audition to get into the academy? I have baby elegphant well honed! hehe

    Well, those b-roll bits were insane... and absolutely glorious you brilliant man xD
    On the topic of reeds, and I suppose this could count as a possible myth, is there any shame in playing a 2.5 reed? Whenever I've been talking to other players and reeds come 3+ strength is always mentioned with 2.5 always being brought up as a beginner thing, like bike stabilisers, that you need to grow out before you unlock the true potential of your horn...

    • @drwallysax
      @drwallysax  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No shame at all with 2.5! On my brilhart Ebolin it works brilliantly! It's all a matter of finding comfort in the resistance level! Great question!
