I recently bought the (expensive) Yak3VK107 with the 10k GE given to me by Gaijin as part of the content partnership program. The Yak3Vk feels really good, it's the best Russian prop in the game. My aim compensates for one of its few shortcomings.
The Yak3VK has massive climb, is fast and has a decent turn. Those are the 3 most important aircraft parameters, and it's over average in all of them. How can it be balanced then? There's the very low rip speed which prohibits some useful maneuvers, and the low ammo load. Still, I still see it as the best Russian prop. It outclasses any German prop in every category below 5km.

These insane snipes from the "normal" AAA are happening all the time now. I really dislike that they buffed it like that. I was flying on Norway 8km away from A point and it still shot me down
Point A isn't normal AA, but yeah.

It's more effective than normal AA even when it's German.

I love to see your fighting skills pushed to the limit... It's amazing to see how you keep track of everyone and merge your defensive maneuvers into one fluid flight ideally ommiting your opponents line of fire!
Not to mention the remarkable shooting skills. I'd love to 1v1 you one day. Of course I'd lose, I know everything about energy fighting, in terms of the basics, and what you should and shouldn't do, but I have no idea about how to use flaps effectively, and my aim sucks.

I can't tell if this is skill or luck anymore. Has to be both. The clouds help to keep the Axis low which in turns helps to save Russian aircraft quite often. It's much harder to win on your own consistently otherwise.
I mean, getting set afire by AA 5km from my af is quite unlucky too.
@@AdamTheEnginerd Speak of the devil... It happened to me in my games twice yesterday as I was attempting to spade my Yak-9U, once whilst I was in scissors with a Spitfire, and the other with a J2M3... And that was at the center of the map!
Can you please make an instructional video on how to fly and use the Bf 109 G2. I am not the best of pilots and am struggling a lot with this plane.

The Default belt is the one I tried less. Probably I need to try it more since I feel unlucky with the damage of these 20mm cannons)
La-9 guns have more predictable ballistics and finishing power for me through.
4x23mm in the nose is hard to beat for destructive power, if you can hit with them.

Never underestimate Yak-3VK (or any Yak for that matter), close game, that head on kill came in the right moment, I thought if the 1v2 went for a bit longer, they might have won on tickets, which would be kinnda sad. But even a loss with 6-7 kills done would be definitely something to be proud of ;-).

270km/h IAS is a very good starting point for any prop fighter. For lighter aircraft, you can go lower (250-260).

I just flew against this plane in my 90% stock Bf109 K4.This plane is disgusting. When merge happens, I climb away while not losing speed, shallow climb. This thing turns behind me, and from 2.5 km away is zoom climbing at greater angle, catching me no problem.I then proceeded to chase it across the map, while this thing was extending away from me.Pros: UFO zoom climb speed and angle, energy retention is UFO, agility like Yak so... a UFO, climb is insane (different than zoom climb), perhaps best cannons in the game.
Cons: It can supposedly rip wings. Wait, it doesn't have any.
Nah not the best cannons. But yeah its performance is amazing. Stock K4 can't do much.

Spaded K4 has the speed and climb advantage starting around 5.5-6km. Below 5km Yak3VK has pretty much every advantage.

Hi Adam, I bought the VK today having been convinced both by your video and from what I read about that plane on the web that it would be a good investment. tbh I have around 10 battles in it now and in every game I play we get destroyed by the germans and allies alike. It seems that we have 1-3 be6's in our team and another 5 CAS planes. Last game I played we were 3 fighters against 10 (allies). Am I just unlucky with the matchmaking im getting today?
You must have been unlucky with the swarm of Russian ground pounders. Usually Russian teams are decent, but sometimes there's a random surge of ground pounders from time to time.

Got this thing yesterday with discounts... this thing is fucking insane lol, it outclimbs any prop apart from the mk24, outruns everything on the deck, has fantastic MER and while not great, guns work fine for me.
This is the only plane where i wish half my teams dies so i can get basically free aces.
Literally the only issue this thing has is the low rip speed
If your team dies though, guns and low ammo prevent you from killing 6+ enemies reliably.
@@AdamTheEnginerd well, when you finish ammo you can use your insane speed at low altitude to rush to the AF... if the enemy follows you, the AA will clean them up, if they let you land and take off, you are once again a rocketship ready to slaughter hopeless K4s, Ta152s, Spitfires, Fw190s, ta152s and all the other props that aren't an mk24 and a very good p51h pilot (if the 51h does not manage web he's dead as well)

12:35 at this time, before chasing the bomber, if he had quit, to not waste a lot of time, would he not received as many points as he would if he stayed until the end?! Because he last lots of points... Happened to me, I was 1st, had couple kills, lots of points like him, but the enemy bomber got to his base, I didn't wanted to wait, I quitted the game and received the amount of points I receive on arcade (way less then the usual when you have 4.000+ [which I had] points on RB)... Maybe because it was a rank 2 plane and I currently am unlocking rank IV aircrafts??
You get more points the longer you stay in a match.
Why default 20mm and what about the I-225, is it the better fighter?
Default seems to work best, but I don't have much experience with Russians 20s.
I225 is only superior above 6km, so nah.

They are very different, but in the sense that they work better than others at altitude yes.
What can I do at lowtier Yaks their climb isn’t nearly as good as other aircrafts like spitfires bf109s or American planes? I always get boom and zoomed by 3 or 2 fighters at one time and I can’t run away that easy . And If I make them overshoot they’ll get away too fast to hit them
They are decent at everything, whatever you don't outclimb, you're faster or you outturn. Requires knowing what the enemy aircraft are good at.
Facing more than your fair share of enemies isn't the fault of the particular plane, it could be the teams or the matchup.
avoid combat with yakovlev fighters lacking an oil cooler under nose below 4500m(Luftwaffe directives eastern front)

Gotta love that P-47 streaking in behind you two like that. I am especially fond of that airframe in WT and glad that I was able to enjoy them when they were at 3.7 BR. What a beast of a plane and still feels undertiered. Also, I've found that it is a really bad idea to play WT while watching WT videos. I am forgetful sometimes, and today was one of those days where I lost track of my game trying to control the wrong airplane on the wrong monitor! Silly me :P I enjoy your videos and I have learned things here. It takes time and effort to thoroughly shake down a plane and get to know what it's capabilities are. So, thank you for sharing your knowledge, Adam.

Hi Adam, recently bought this plane, and whats the best tactic to use while in it? If i climb I can kill maybe 2-3 high alt fighters but the rest of the team usually die and it ends with 7 enemy fighters chasing after me, If i use the yak as a mid/low alt fighter I usually run out of ammo and get boomed, plus I'm relatively new to WT so my aim isnt the best.
Climb straight in and kill or push down the highest enemies first. It's plays like a Griffon Spitfire.

Tell me, when flying Russian aircraft such as this, do you still climb all-out at the beginning of a match, even though high altitude performance of these aircraft generally suck?
One issue with this plane in particular is that it can't dive on people, so if everyone is way below you, you have to sort of spiral slowly down so you don't exceed your rip speed. On the other hand, it's never fun to have people dive on you because you didn't climb...
By climbing straight in/towards their sideclimbing aircraft, you'll be slightly above the enemy at 5-6km and you can dive on them and BnZ freely. So the high alt performance only matters if you let some slip through your fingers, but in that case you take care of the rest of them and let the sideclimbers get 1-2 passes on you until you equalize energy.
MEC allows you to increase drag to dive steeper ;).

hey man do you think you could do a video flying a low br italian fighter? im currently playing the c205 series 1 and im struggleing with reversals and im finding that the plane losses a lot of speed when doing any kind of vertical manuevre

All planes lose a lot of speed in maneuvers, especially vertical ones. If you started with a lower speed, they'll get guns on you.

Many people complain about Russian guns. They are fine imo, better than Hispanos for sure. Velocity is average, the fire rate is high.
Ugh why u do dis Adam? Now I feel like installing the game again and giving it another shot. You make it look so easy! Fortunately I’m too burnt out and tired of the game to go there and I find it far more relaxing to just enjoy watching you play it. You are my last bridge to that game man lol

What I do is I record it on my laptop next to me at the same time as the gameplay, and combine them during editing.

Want proof? Play p47 d27. I was the only person with kills for literally 10 games. Only ones I won were 6/7 kill games.
Probably why he got the premium. Can't stand the teams, lol.
In my experience Russians usually win against everyone but lose miserably against Japan.
My only problem with the russians in general is the low ammo

03:10 thats because svak 20mm belts are bad. The HEF Rounds have the lowest explosive filler among all 20mm and the FTI are just fireworks. You using default belts, which might be the best for the 20mm. Other players have groundtarget belts or universal because they think default belts are the worst out of all because they are free. In which plane are default belts the best? Idk most players wont use them when they got more better options. Hispanos are much more better than shvak for my taste.
Depends on the day, but in general I do prefer Hispanos indeed.

La7 is a better deal for the BR imo indeed.
La-7 is easily my favourite Russian prop
La-7 is bad in my opinion too, horrific performance over 4k and versing japanese superbias. Italians have a spitfire on steroids with their op 20mm cannons, But against germans at low alt it works wonders.
I also still dont understand why the La-9 is at 6.0, IMO it should be at 5.7

It's tough. Turn radius is pretty close, but in a sustained turn the VK will win. You can run away for a decent amount of time thanks to the low rip speed of the VK, enough to retreat and bait for teammates. In a 1vs1 though, the VK will eventually get you.
Adam I've been watching a lot of your videos and I'm really impressed with the level of thought that goes into your flying. I've always understood energy management and use of the vertical as concepts, but seeing you put them into action has really opened my eyes.
I used to play a lot of Ace Combat. I'm now going to start playing War Thunder and I'm trying to learn as much as I can before I start buying gear. I always played Ace Combat with the HOTAS controller, and want to do the same with War Thunder. I'm also really interested in playing with VR. Can you tell me what kind of a setup you have?

There are different game modes in WT, only simulator battles would require the use of joystick and more. I mainly play Realistic battles, so I use the good old mouse and keyboard. I suggest to start play Arcade and then Realistic before jumping into simulator, so you've got some time before you get into simulator to decide what to buy. I have an average joystick for my sim excursions (mainly testing).

Other than that... Yes the Vk-107 is a trully 6.0 fighter... I just wish it had the same amount of guns and ammunition as the Yak-3P :'v

Well i've test all belts of the shvak cannons and the B-20's and i found that right now they all perform very similar... Even the armored target's so i guess is more of what did you prefer over than which one is the most effective

The price is high, so no. Just fly the Yak3U for the same feel.

What 5.7 BR like? Do you often face 6.7 jets? Are you often uptiered against Griffons and Bearcats?
I haven't been in a 5.7-6.7 match yet IIRC. 5.3-6.3 happens from time to time, I've faced Griffons and Bearcats. Yak3VK generally has better performance, but they can dive away and you can't follow.

K4 probably starts getting the speed and climb advantage above 5km. K4 also has better guns and rip speed. But yeah Yak3VK counters the K4 well.
It seems like every time I crit fire a yak it extinguishes the fire if it gets away. I always stay on them and try to secure the kill even while they are still on fire. Also I just recently stumbled upon your content and I must say that I am in awe at your skill. Especially your aim. But one question, How do I get that readout that shows the different stats? it does not seem to be an ingame option.
Nah don't waste time, alt and ammo on any burning plane unless it's the last one. You can get into a shallow climb close to the burning plane if you think it will go out and the situation permits it.

Hi, Adam. I'm confused about your statement about the low thrust at low speed. I checked throughout the game and it seemed like the slower the plane flew the higher the thrust value in the black box was. Could you please elaborate on this, i'm quite curious. Dope vid btw.

@@AdamTheEnginerd ok i watched the video and this is my conclusion. The yak would have lower thrust at low speeds but because you adjust prop pitch manually (at least when taking off), no thrust is lost. Yes?
@@twister300000 Adjusting the pitch manually only works on German aircraft because their prop pitch % corresponds to a pitch angle instead of RPM, and it's only worth using on Bf109s. Can't fix this issue on things like the Yak3VK.
@@AdamTheEnginerd oh i see. I always thought prop pitch % = prop pitch angle. Does this mean only 109s are able to adjust their prop pitch angle and the rest just adjust RPMs? Also, just to conclude, the vk107-yak has the same problem as a bf109 that it loses thrust rather quickly under a certain speed but there is no way to fix this with mec. Yes?

I hate the 20mm hispanos, I'm not the most accurate player but the fact that I can't hold down the trigger for 3 seconds without my hispanos jamming up just ticks me off. So for me the ShVAK cannons are better.
Upgraded Hispanos last longer than 3s though, and you shouldn't be holding down the trigger for that long anyway imo.

Seriously, whenever I fly out my Bf109 G6 and get put in that map, I either get killed too quickly to be brutally murdered by the AA, or I live long enough to suffer a long death after the aa gets a hit on my water/oil, draining it clean.

1km is very close the enemie is normaly dead at atleast 1.3 km. Ta152c3 i love headons with that plane.

@@AdamTheEnginerd They do. I mean the Yak-3 (VK-107) actually uses the VK-107A propeller. That's why I think it should be called Yak-3 (VK-107A) in War Thunder. The Yak-3 with the VK-107B engine and VK-108 probably won't be implementend within the game.
The one implemented in the game did see service. Same thing with the VK-107B but not as much.

heck, russian 20mms are great, buffed with stalinium bullets. German Minengeshots tho is a joke that doesn't perform the same across playtime. Sometimes blew tail right of enemy's plane, sometimes 100 bullets not enough to scratch an attack plane

Adam514 i mean Im only lv 18 on wt so fairly new. Havent tried heck load of vehicle, but my main are germans. I spoke about when we’re chasing an enemy and shooting them from behind, if it’s a top or belly shot, minengeshots kick ass.
People complain about Shvaks, not Bs Cannons. Shvaks have horrible ballistic, and they just spark. Deflection shots are impossible, since they need long bursts on planes to actually do damage

AdamTheEnginerd well, with bs cannons i can kill stuff. The balistic is good, and they do damage and can rip aircraft parts. Shvaks only set fires (unless your opponent are zeros)

What a outstanding game. Performance too.
Using superior climb and speed to run away and outclimb was a really good plan. I don't really fly planes that can do this well, either slow, and great climbing or fast and mediocre climbing.
Think that i was the most amazed by was 20mm performance in your hands.
Most of the kills i can explain because:
2 kills were fire kills,
2 were pilot snipes
1 was b17 tail rip that happened cause of a lot of shooting there,
1 was g55 giving up after being heavily damaged yhanks to a long burst.
Those kind of kills happen often when tou shoot with AP and fragmentation shells that lack HE power (like russian 20mm FI-T).
Both often set on fire and kill pilots. They very rarely rip wings and tails though (That's what good HE shells do well)
Despite that, Ki 61 kill and Bf 109 head on realy, really, REALLY stunned me.
Those were big explosion for ki 61 and engine kill+wing rip for bf 109.
That kind of things hapen usually with Mg 151, AN/M's and sometimes with Type 99. 20mm SHVAK are really bad at those kind of things from what i know.
Either it's a rare coincidence, or i don't know something, and shvaks could be buffed.
You said that they work fine for you. Do that kind of EXPLOSIONS (Ki 61), and wing/tail rip happed often for you?
After 1.79 all 20mm cannons except russian and Ho-5 were buffed. I played about 50-60 games on russian 20mm armed planes, and i pretty much gave up on any russian plane armed primarilly with them. They were heavily disapointing compared to other canons. They required a lot of shooting then hitting anything except pilot-engine area. All belts were pretty bad, i cound tell wchich was better. Maybe AP-I is the explanation, since FI-T were bad for me.
I have to fly them again.
Hope for the better Russian air RB future arises. At least armament wise.

It's kind of like the K4, except better at low alt and worse at high alt.
I think Russian 20mm have a higher dependence on where the shell hits, compared to utter destruction from Mg151s and AN/Ms. So with even more precise aiming, you can do similar damage with Russian 20mm.
I can't say that the exploding Ki61 happened often though indeed. Wing/tail rips happen a bit more.

Spitfires will outturn you. You outclimb and outspeed them at low-mid alt.
Since they changed the belt composition on shvaks they only get hits for me. Used to love those guns

For Shvaks, default seem to work best for me. They are all pretty bad.
HE shells suck for Shvak cannons because they have have so little explosive filler. So the best bet is to go for default or armored targets because they have no HE and only incendiary rounds- most kills from Shvaks come from fires and not from explosive filler.
