  • American Reacts to The Two Ronnies Phantom Raspberry Blower of Old London Town pt 1
I react to the television serial from the Two Ronnies that was originally on BBC as a serial, The Phantom Blower of Old London Town. Originally shown in 1976 the serial was co-written by Gerald Wiley, the pseudonym for Ronnie Barker. he story was originally conceived as a TV special for Peter Sellers, Harry Seacombe, and Spike Milligan, to be produced by Peter Eton, their old Goon Show producer. Plans for the project were cancelled due to Peter Sellers' Hollywood commitments. The Phantom finally saw the light of day in an episode of Six Dates with Barker, broadcast on 15 January 1971, with Alan Curtis playing the role of the Phantom.

How fortunate we are. Not only to have had these two but also to have the ability to record them for endless reruns. They are still making people laugh even after death, now that is class.

This serial was written by Spike Milligan and a Gentleman. The Gentleman being none other than a certain Gerald Wiley with authentic raspberries blown by none other than Del Boy himself - David Jason.
It's a shame that due to copyright it's hard to come by full episodes. The format barely changed in 16 years. Each episode has spoof news items from the newsdesk, sketches with both of them, a weekly continuing serial ( a new story every series) a guest singer, a solo sketch from Ronnie B normally using his mastery of word play, an armchair monologue from Ronnie C that was a deliberately corny shaggy dog story that got it's humour from RC constantly going off from his story in distractingly wild tangents, an elaborate musical finale ( often with the two of them in drag ) and each show finishing back at the newsdesk.
It was a format that worked, and it worked for 16 years with it only stopping when Ronnie B decided to retire.
    Pure Magic!!!

You forgot the Musical Guest Star (one or two apperances), actually filmed separate and off set, - always seemed to be filmed at same time as a recording of Parkinson appearences, so never any interaction with their guest stars unlike Morecombe and Wise.

Oh god, I remember seeing this when I was a little kid - a rerun I would think! The next day, everyone was running around the playground pretending to be the phantom raspberry blower or the copper. Everyone used to watch the same thing back then, of course. So funny even today!

We did too, with salvos of raspberries being blown all over the school grounds. And even funnier and much to the bemusement of teachers and play time supervisors, we were all swishing about the place doing impressions of Dick Emery's character Maurice. One can only imagine a gaggle of seven and eight year olds swanning about saying "Ooh hallo Honkey Tonks, 'ow are you?!" 😁

They always did a multipart serial in all their series, 5 minutes or so each week. There was the detective duo Piggy Malone & Charley Farley, there was a Pride and Prejudice based one and of course The Worm That Turned which was an alternative reality one where all the men wore the skirts and the women were the ones in charge of everything. Of those I remember.

The perpetually offended don't think it's cool and if they don't, the middle class have to follow suit, otherwise they will have a bad time one way or the other. They have to think as a group, that's why facts are alien to them, it messes with their agenda, they don't really have, it's as if they can't believe they've gotten this far and are stuck. The people, are right in the middle because they don't want any "ist" problems, "ist" problems want to ruin your entire life, it's like 90% of people have turned in to ants and just follow the stupidest of us so as to keep thier new Audi.

Even if you wasn't told it was written by him, if you knew his work, it would have become obvious very quickly. No-one did silly like Spike. The Phantom Raspberry Blower is a perfect example of his work and was performed brilliantly by two of the UK's greatest comedy geniuses. :)

Spike Milligan wrote and appeared in the wacky radio comedy 'The Goon Show' in the 50s and 60s along with Peter Sellers and Harry Secombe. This was a great influence on the 'Monty Python's Flying Circus' team in the 70s, and many other later comedians. Spike Milligan had his own comedy TV series ('Q') for many years. He was also a poet, a musician and a writer. Milligan's six part WW2 memoir 'trilogy'(!) is perhaps one of the best of its kind ever written.

The man who wrote this for the 2 Ronnie's is Spike Milligan. He did lots of madcap humour. He insisted that they put this on his grave stone when he died " See I told you I was ill". They refused to put it on in English so as a compromise they wrote it in Gaelic, Spike was one of the Goons and wrote most of their stuff.

Growing up in the 80s this was the thing that was always on the telly each Saturday evening amongst other such shows, but this is the one probably most I their 40s will remember from early childhood, and those a bit older will probably remember this or morecambe and wise most. The fact it finished in 87 and is still so funny and fondly remembered is testament to Barker's writing and their acting. Porridge being another classic.

The writer Terence 'Spike' Milligan was a gunner in the Royal Artillery during WWII, and arguably lost his marbles at one point, being haunted by terrible dreams and later manic-depressive phases that made him both erratic and enormously productive as a comedy writer.
Much of his humour was developed during his time in entertainment troupes in the army and later in the old music hall tradition of comedy acts as that style faded away post-WWII.
In novels (Puckoon), in early short films (The Case of the Mukkinese Battlehorn, Postman's Knock) he worked with others that shared and complemented his risky style on radio (the Goon Show).
Later his memoirs and character roles in numerous films as well as writing for stage, television (the 'Q' series Q8, etc.) and many appearances on comedy or talk shows kept him in the lime-light almost until his death.
He was one of many people who wrote for the Two Ronnies; these episodic films within a TV series were one of several that kept the Ronnie's popularity high for many years.

Its great to see America reacting to british comedy. Everyone in the world needs to relax and have a good laugh. Ronnie Barker wrote most of the scripts, and yes, when he does a 2 minutes 'solo', he does know what to say. Love your laughter. Slowly its coming the other way. Brits in USA showing what makes you laugh at. Keep it up EB.

Spike Milligan who wrote this was one of the Goons , an iconic and ground breaking 50s comedy sketch show on BBC Radio 4. Peter Sellers, Harry Secombe and Michael Betine were the others. A lot of BBC comedy originates on Radio 4 before reaching TV.
Spike Milligan was notorious for his quirky and surreal humour. The headstone on his grave famously reads:
"I told you I was ill."

I watched this every week as a kid. People today born in the 80s and above forget how huge and a part of weekend TV these guys were as well as Morecambe and Wise. They were an institution when practically everyone on a Saturday night would sit down in front of the TV. Though to be honest, back then I was probably led on the carpet waiting for Starsky and Hutch, Quincey ME or Kojak to start at 9pm.

So many of the sight gags in this come from the simple problems of shooting things out of sequence, needing stand-ins for other actors, even shooting two visits on different days in the same day at the hospital location.
The Monty Python guys adapted this to their instances of characters noticing that they'd gone from 'on film' to 'in the studio' and back again in one scene, probably shot weeks apart.

Spike Milligan was one of the Goons and their radio show in the 1950's was totally different to any of the conventional comedy series of that era. The Goons was the inspiration for the later Monty Python TV Series. My favourite Spike Milligan sketch was 'What time is it Eccles?' which is so surreal. It might be something different for you to react to.

There's a lot of Spike Milligan in this, you should watch some of his stuff if you think this is random.
Spike was originally one of The Goons along with Peter Sellers, Harry Secombe and Michael Bentine. Peter Sellers, obviously, went on to have a great film career, Michael Bentine went into comedic children's programmes and Harry Secombe became a regular on UK TV screens, either singing or in religious shows. Spike Milligan had some great series, the Monty Python guys said The Goon Show was among their main influences, especially Spike.
He's actually in Life of Brian because he just happened to be in the country when they were filming, he buggered off before they could use him more though.

A bit of an insight there into the absurdist humour of Spike Milligan, a very famous comedy writer & performer from the post-war radio days. He was in a comedy group called "The Goon Show" with Peter Sellers, Harry Secombe and Michael Bentine. Sadly he suffered from manic depression and the pressure of writing was exhausting. A lot of his TV work can't be shown now because they skirted the edge of what is considered racist or sexist. He denied being racist and probably was just a person who fitted a different age. He was a comedy genius on the radio where he could use sound effects to send listeners into a world impossible to film.
