I like the idea of starting from the ground up. It makes it much easier to get the right spacing and it gives you a good idea of the end range of the motion
Male, nearly 50 years old, and always avoided lunges/squats because of lower back pain and previous knee surgeries. This is the first time I’m excited to try a lunge instead of relying on stationary bike with resistance and/or walking/stairs throughout the day as “lower body” work. Much appreciated!!
I've been looking for this my whole life, well 2 years 😊 - "How do I know if my form is correct during the lunge?" "Should I be feeling it in my front or back leg?" All my questions FINALLY answered! Thank youuuu!
This here just saved me from starting walking lunges without correcting my form. I’m working on my anterior pelvic, tight hamstrings, sacroiliac joint pain and other pelvic issues. Last thing I needed was to mess up my knees. My lunges and squats are all over the place. Thank you! Subscribed!
Probably people suffering some PTSD from their first couple of times doing lunges, and they're just rage "disliking" every lunge video they can find now.
I'm so glad I saw this . My trainer has me doing walking lunges and Bulgarian squats with weights and I have never done this before. My knees are crying
This dude needs to go into politics or business-a profession where strong speaking and verbal communication skills are at a premium. The clearest workout instruction video I’ve ever seen.
you need to know about politics to go into politics and same go for business. Having excellent presentation skills does help but it doesn't mean you are going to be good politician or businessman just based on it. ( sorry for bad English) (commenting on TH-cam for English learning purpose please point out grammar mistakes to help me improve)
Just started working out at home and doing body weight squats and stepping lunges My knees burn after my workouts - so I will definitely try the stationary lunges from now on. Thank you!
So comprehensive! I'd been avoiding lunges because of knee pain and not feeling it where I'm supposed to. This helped me to realise that for my current fitness level, maybe the walking and reverse lunges are too advanced until I can build up those muscles. Starting from the ground up has been a game changer! Finally feeling it where I'm supposed to and getting the most out of this exercise!
Thanks for clearing this up. Tore some ligaments in a high school football injury and have felt uneasy in trying. Squats are not an issue, but my balance is off in my lunges. As a middle aged man in my 50’s, and my workout routine has been hampered by not being able to do lunges properly and I refuse to be helpless. Thank you so much for sharing this information! Stay strong 💪🏾
This was a brilliant explanation, best I've met in all my years of thinking squats were the bees knees! I shall be taking lunges seriously from now on. I was put off them years ago when I was doing 100 a side daily, leaning too far forward, and my quads became too big for a balanced leg.
You are a knee saver! I had total knee replacement about 11 months ago, doc said do lunges, so I've been doing the walking lunge. As mentioned in your video, this puts a good deal more stress on the knee - therefore I've been skipping lunges (walking type), thereby leaving my upper leg muscles with some atrophy, even after almost 11 months post surgery. The stationary lunge in your video is perfect - so much easier on my knee!!!
I'm glad I looked it up before attempting it because I gained a lot of weight and I'm trying to exercise again and wanted to do lunges. That's a great way for me start off.
Brisk walking is great for losing weight! Easy on the joints and is a whole body workout. I make a Whey (not soy) protein shake with bananas before and after my brisk walks. I lost 12 pounds in a week. Protein is natures diet "pill" and bananas provide the proper amount of nutrients and carbs. Yes, carbs! Muscles need carbs for energy and protein for building (before) and repairing afterwards. So I make a protein banana smoothie! Sometimes I add strawberries. No sugar is necessary especially if you use very ripe bananas. That delicious shake is my reward! Use a free pedometer from your phone's app store. I wish for you to enjoy less pounds, a healthy heart, and a very nice body!
i have a crappy knee but want to do lunges because they are good for thighs. i tried this method and it works!!! I never thought to start from bottom up. kudos for the clear instruction! Yeassss
This is the best video I've seen for starting lunges properly. Starting lunges from bottom position is the best piece of advice for people how are dealing with knee pain like patellar tendinitis. Interesting that you don't mention back lunges
This is without doubt the best fitness channel around.Have always struggled with lunges. Now I know what to do right. Thanks a ton for sharing these valuable tips
Thank you, sir, for the great recommendations. I started with walking and have knee issues, so I'm going back to stationary. Really appreciate the advice and commentary. (Fallen arches likely source of knee pain & ankle instability, but there are other exercises to do for that.)
I'm really glad you pointed out that the static split squat (your setup on the floor) should be trained before an actual forward or backward lunge. I just call it a "split squat" in my programming so that people don't get the idea that they're going to be traveling with the movement, until it's time.
the ground up advice is super useful. I don't have anyone to check my form so when doing the lunges there's no way for me to tell when all the parts are moving.
This is a very educational video. Now I understand why I'm having knee pain. I have balance instability and weak leg muscles. You've saved me! Thank you. so much.
I've been doing it wrong! Where were you all this time... :) Thank goodness I found this vid. I'm predisposed to knee pain because I'm a very keen cyclist. I did a lot of Gym spinning and that is where my knees got bad. Thank you for the tips.
Keep in mind, the Five stars are based on my needs for this item th-cam.com/users/postUgkxUHHotQRjIQnfuxEeVotlkHVYWH0DXZoS When I first bought the bike I was going to return it immediately. After trying it out for several days/weeks I came to realize it is actually perfect for WHY I bought it.This is not a workout, the resistance is, eh, it makes a bit of noise, not loud, and it isn’t very stable even with the mat. The mat certainly keeps the bike from sliding but nothing keeps the mat from sliding (if that makes any sense, lol). Mine is place on my hard wood floor. Maybe it would be better with a rug underneath??I sit for long hours for work and wanted something to keep my legs moving. This bike does exactly that! For the price it is amazing, it is compact, easy to use, light weight, keeps track of time, calories etc (not sure how accurate it is) but good little product. I am happy with it.
Walking lunges are incredible for your core, knees, and overall strength, especially as you get older. I only do them on the beach in deep sand where the pressure is decreased on your knees and ankles but lateral balance in those areas is increased! Sand is inherently uneven, meaning it works all your ligaments/tendons but at decreased pressure so you can simulate real world circumstances without the damage of actual high level sport performance. You are not going to move in a forward lunge in such a linear way in the real world, so there's always a chance that you will have an injury from not being balanced when your body is suddenly called upon to perform after developing your muscles in this manner.
Accidentally watched someone else’s lunge video and decided to look for something else when I was unstable during the exercise, and had knee pain after. Holy shit this was a perfect how to. Thanks!
My physio has added lunges to my program, this is super helpful when i don't have her there to cue my movements and make corrections. Thanks very much!
Omg thank you!! I am a beginner and I have been doing walking lunges and wondering why my knee was starting to hurt so much. I’ll stick to beginner lunges for now. I had no idea!
Awesome! I thought the lunge was more of a quad exercise, I didn't realise it was half and half. This also explained my knee pain. To be honest, the beginner variation just looks like a better exercise all around for me.
Finally, somebody explain it to me clear. I had a trainer that was pushing me to do it walking with weights. It was my first time. He really bit @##% of me and next day I was with fever on my legs I couldn't go up stairs or sit. Obviously I didn't came back to him or to the gym in long time. I was so discourage and frustrated. I don't understand why there are some trainers that don't have the intuition to go easy with a beginner. I heard that story several times with different people. Now I'm working out to my own paste I have been doing it for 4 month lost 28 lbs.
Glad I found this. Started trying lunges this morning.Stepping forward with left leg from standing position and lunging and going back to standing position.Did this for one minute till I felt pain in glutes So thanks.I'll take your easier approach for a few weeks.
finally! im. always unsure if im. doing it right, like how far my feet should be from my body, everytime i do this. and that aligning thing, i dont even realise (newbie here, sorry😊. been watching your great vids since few days ago & already subscribed) thank u so much danny! wow! u guys are great! 👏👍🤗💕
You have the right idea to start movement at the bottom/end. I found the movement to be very intimidating to start from the top of the movement since my one leg is shorter than the other resulting in me being a little off balance when starting from the top. Thanks for the tip.
OMG thank you sooooooo much. I just started working out again. This helps me out a lot because I tried modified lunges but my knees would hurt (and I would have stop).
i was so fedup with squats, yes they're fantastic but my gosh lunged i feel so bad i neglected learning how to do (i get afraid of some exercises that ill hurt myself ) thank you!
I am up to doing 60lb Dumbbell Squats, but a co worker suggested trying Lunges to hit all the leg muscles. After watching your video so I don't upset any joints ( 38 Years old ain't no teenager anymore lol ) I can say... These are friggin HARD despite having very strong legs already! Thanks for putting out this simple floor up technique, it works really well. She did a little 75 Day Boy vs Girl challenge that I intend to win, we are both in decent shape so it's more motivational than actual competition.
I've been having knee pain after some frequent front squatting -- but never considered the possibility the problem could be the walking lunges I've been doing as a workout finisher. Just checked my form and my knee definitely goes over my toes.
Yea, I have always done lunges one side at a time where I go up and down with both feet glued to the floor. I do a set for one side followed by a set for the other side but I have never seen anyone perform them in the same fashion.
This is a good and concise video. Even 2 years later you're helping people like me. Your explanation of if the workout is doing what's intended helped a lot.

"my whole life, … 2 years". Well, I have to say you write very well for a 2-year old. And it’s great that you’re getting into it early! 😂
One of the best and simplest explanations I’ve ever heard on the lunge. Very clear, basic, nothing flashy, very easy to make sense of. Awesome 🤙🏾
This here just saved me from starting walking lunges without correcting my form.
I’m working on my anterior pelvic, tight hamstrings, sacroiliac joint pain and other pelvic issues. Last thing I needed was to mess up my knees. My lunges and squats are all over the place.

I simply can't imagine why any viewer would give this a thumbs-down! This was a great explanation about how to get started with lunges!!!
Thanks mans!
Probably people suffering some PTSD from their first couple of times doing lunges, and they're just rage "disliking" every lunge video they can find now.
Roger Davis exactly 👍👍👍😅
Mind Pump TV and you’re also very 🥵
Probably a competitor who has his own youtube fitness channel.

Right?! When it comes to fitness I've learned TH-cam research beats trainers' opinions 9 times out of 10

Ok this video is 4 years old but I actually just did my first few lunges with this help. Starting stationary is a huge game changer.!
This guy is great. Covers everything correctly and explains why. You earned a sub.

My favorite place for fitness advice and explaining exercises... As a trainer, this brings amazing value to my clients and myself! ❤

Clear and concise. Always appreciated Danny's instruction. Regret that he seems to have disappeared.
you have saved me, i was on the verge of stopping lunges
Me too 😅
I wonder if Danny has done the CFSC certification. A lot of what he saying is exactly what it teaches, which is awesome!
Straight to the point. No wanking about subs or ads. 👍
Thanks for that point about keeping a vertical shin. No wonder my knee has been a little sore.
Really good advice. I’ve always had a balance issue so the static lunge is a great place to start. Thanks guys
Static is a split squat. Lunge moves forward or backwards.
Detailed guidelines! Great as always!
George Pateropoulos Glad you enjoyed!

Dude.. So direct and easy to understand. This is what a good fitness instructor requires. Awesome
super helpful. now i feel like im getting something from lunges instead of just knee pain.
Such a simple movement yet somehow I always managed to fuck it up. This is very helpful.
I rarely comment but I enjoyed your wording and the way you delivered the information so simply. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this. Lunges are vital to my workout plan but I always do walking lunge and lose my balance. This has been a massive help.
This is great! I am so glad I found this early on as a newbie to it! I was all over the place doing it all wrong.
This is the first time I've ever heard of ground up lunges. Brilliant!
Omg ive been searching everywhere for lunge explanation and this guy is the best - liked subbed and shared 🎉
This by far has to be one of the best tutorials for lunge technique!!!
Thank you this looks safe.
I screw my knees whenever i try to do lunges 😭 i hope that with this technique i will do it properly 😑
Thank you. I am a beginner and have been struggeling with very soar knees. This was a good video for me.
This is excellent. As a 54 year old with knee pain I am definitely doing to try it this way to improve my lunges! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
My PT instructed me to extend my leg out further when I stepped to avoid knee pain. It worked.
Totally agree with you on unilateral exercises! They are my favorite.
Omg thank you! I have hated lunges for so long. Still do. But I was just doing it wrong and focusing on the wrong part of the body.
This is so helpful! and the only place I have seen this explained this clearly. This is the first place I check now for fitness advice!
This is the most helpful video I’ve seen for lunges. They all say the same things but you really broke it down. Thank you!
Omg, this should be the top result for any search for "lunge". Breaks down all the form to preform injury free
I was feeling in it more in the back leg glad you addressed it
Glad I found this. Started trying lunges this morning.Stepping forward with left leg from standing position and lunging and going back to standing position.Did this for one minute till I felt pain in glutes

wow this has been so helpful and informative, thank you 🌻💖
Wow what a great video. I’m really struggling at the moment with lunges I can’t keep my balance very well. Found this video very helpful
His point about vertical shins is significant especially if you have any knee problems.
i was so fedup with squats, yes they're fantastic but my gosh lunged i feel so bad i neglected learning how to do (i get afraid of some exercises that ill hurt myself ) thank you!
10/10 explanation. Thanks!
Great job Danny - hope you have more vids for MP TV!

Thanks, dude. I've been looking for a different alternative to squats, I would actually benefit more from this 👍
Great video, I came for the reverse lunge but am sold on the standing lunge!
I've been having knee pain after some frequent front squatting -- but never considered the possibility the problem could be the walking lunges I've been doing as a workout finisher. Just checked my form and my knee definitely goes over my toes.
Mike D nothing wrong with knee over toes as a general rule. Just bothers some. Hopefully you can get to a place where that doesn’t bother you :)
this is the best channel for teaching people
Yea, I have always done lunges one side at a time where I go up and down with both feet glued to the floor. I do a set for one side followed by a set for the other side but I have never seen anyone perform them in the same fashion.

I think he is very calming to listen to
I appreciate the options and the thorough explanation.
Great video. clear instructions for both beginners and advanced users of the lunge can only be of benefit.

I'm 67. I need this! Plus I can alternate it. By using my 25lb. rubber weider grip plates. Or my York roundhead dumbells!!
Excellent Class!! So well and cristal-clear explained!!
Brilliant explanation 👌
Thx! I was struggling w/ the walking lounge.
So appreciate the simple, concise instruction. Excellent channel.
