Thank you so much for this tutorial! I was stumped on how I was going to handle a silver spoon in a painting I am doing and this tutorial has helped tremendously! Thank you!
Man, that was so great. I leaned a lot from you. I am a retired public school art teacher here in the USA. I thought I would learn techniques, etc in university. We weren’t taught enough of how to paint, etc. when I look back in my educational experience, I get angry because I was under the strong impression that we would get that. I was wrong. Thank you from the many tips I just learned from you. Thank you very much for this. I have written down these tips!
Hi Debbie, thanks for taking the time to let us know what you thought of the lesson! We appreciate your positive feedback and it's awesome to hear that you found the tips helpful :)
Hello Joe, 1- I wish you a very happy new year 2- this painting is beautiful... there is everything, the shining silver opposite to the matte of the textile, reflections according to the concave and convex forms of the pot, the drape of the fabric, the work chiselled of the handles... even the music ! 3- Bravo Maestro 4- As usual, big kisses from France
Fabulous painting. You did a great job showing how to simply the tricky bits. Yes I’d like to see a tutorial on folds in fabric. Also tips to paint the same in acrylic. Thanks.
Thank you for this video! I’m a beginner and I’ve been doing backgrounds first which caused my pencil outlines to get lost in the paint. I know know to do backgrounds last
remember he had pencil on there first but he made it dark enough to where he could see it through his paint so it doesn't matter whether you do your background first or not, its a preference
I'm so afraid someone is going to say something like, "This reminds me of another great artist... Bob Ross." Please, have mercy, I won't sleep tonight. Yes, Bob seemed very nice. Although while it seems to be the common assumption, I did not know him. I guess people just know these things.
I dont mean to be so off topic but does anyone know of a method to log back into an Instagram account..? I somehow lost my password. I love any tips you can give me!
@Nico Damien I really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and im in the hacking process now. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Absolutely stunning, was so happy to see the silver come out so well. Metallic surface and jewellery are always very difficult to paint. Thank you for this tutorial. Pl show how to paint jewellery too sometime soon
For oil painting: Done background first.., Start work on object, Use darker shade firstly, Then use lighter shades, In the end use white, Now work on shadows, Then enhanced background when first layer of background compeletly or partially dry.. , Again gives some shine to your painting... , Is am right?
Very well done thank you for this video now I'm wondering if you might do or have done a similar video with a gold or bronze colored metal reflecting objects of different colors like a blue or green object reflected in gold to see how the metal affects the color of the reflection
Hi Irina, thanks for commenting. 😊 We recommend thinning the paint with refined linseed oil. Proportions for the diluting will depend on the use but we recommend adding the refined linseed oil in small amounts until you get a texture you are happy with. Happy creating! 😊🎨
Hi Mumtaz, thanks for your comment! Yes, you can use oil paints for the base instead of acrylic paints (it will just take longer to dry). We'd recommend thinning the paint with a small amount of turpentine to create the background tint ;)
Hi Sherry, thanks for your comment! Our music is sourced from a stock music website, so it's not widely available - sorry we don't have an answer for you.
Hi Kym, Great question! You can paint it first or last, it just depends on how you'd like to do it :) For this particular project, it was a bit easier to do it last because our artist could rest his hand on the surface while he painted the main subject.
Hi there, great question! No not always. In this case we're painting the background with acrylics to seal the wooden board, and we chose brown to give a nice rich undertone for our still life painting. Depending on your subject matter and what colours you will be using, you can pick a different background colour.
Hi Mary, great question! For this project, our artist tried to create exactly what he saw. The reflection of the lemon already had a dirty yellow/green look to it, so he replicated that colour. Reflections on metallic surfaces that aren't mirrors will often be more muted and won't look exactly the same as the object in real life. Hope that answers your question :)
Hi Lo Lo, great question! Our artist created this one with the "alla prima" technique, which means it was painted all at once without letting any areas dry. For this reason, he found it easier to paint in the subject in first and add in the background after :)
Hi there, We have used a combination of our satin acrylics and oil paints. To find the exact colours and products used, you can download the tutorial guide here > www.montmarte.net/media/aw_blog/project_resources/still-life-painting-with-reflective-surfaces_1.pdf 😊
Hi there, glad you enjoyed the lesson! You can use gesso to seal the surface, but for this project our artist wanted to work with a more absorbent surface for this project so he sealed the canvas with a thin layer of acrylic paint instead. This meant he could use some of the natural tone from the wood to add some warmth to the final colours :)
Hi Annalisa, great questions! The only medium used in this painting was refined linseed oil to help the paint flow more smoothly. We didn't use the fat over lean method because it was done in one sitting (alla prima).
wow! i definitely enjoy watching this video! Such a good demonstration and explanation video. Would have a try... Do you think Acrylic paint can do the same effect as oil paint? So far i only did acrylic ones.
Hi Wei, great question! Unfortunately you won't be able to achieve the same effects with acrylic paint because it won't blend like oils. We do have a range of acrylic painting tutorials on our channel if that's of any interest :)

Do you paint a picture in one session?
Thank you for a beautiful lesson. Tell me, how do you dilute paints? In what proportions?
Hi Irina, thanks for commenting. 😊 We recommend thinning the paint with refined linseed oil. Proportions for the diluting will depend on the use but we recommend adding the refined linseed oil in small amounts until you get a texture you are happy with. Happy creating! 😊🎨
@@MontMarteArt Thank you for your answer. But only one refined oil and that's it? Without a thinner? And not art linseed oil, but refined?
This painting is so cool
Wow!! So realistic thank you!!!
Hi nice demonstration of still life painting
Can we not use oil colour as base instead of acrylic paint?
Hi Mumtaz, thanks for your comment! Yes, you can use oil paints for the base instead of acrylic paints (it will just take longer to dry). We'd recommend thinning the paint with a small amount of turpentine to create the background tint ;)

You are very inspiring and I learned. I do a lot of glass and reflection surfaces. Why did you paint green for lemon reflection in vessals?
Hi Mary, great question! For this project, our artist tried to create exactly what he saw. The reflection of the lemon already had a dirty yellow/green look to it, so he replicated that colour. Beautiful helpful demonstration! Was that just a plain board or pre-treated for painting? And you really just sealed it with acrylics?
