Pointers for beginners + extra stuff I forgot to mention in the video: 1) Learn how not to "drop in" on people's waves. Google it or risk getting your butt whooped by locals/someone you piss off. Google "surf etiquette" in general. I know, it's a lot of rules but better to start getting used to them ASAP 2) Watch out for sea-urchin spikes on the way in/out of the water. Try to get them out with a tweezer/needle and vinegar ASAP if you do get some stuck in you. Take them out slowly 3) Use a foam-top when you're starting (I actually only used a foamie, but really learned to appreciate why later) 4) To minimize pain, wear a rash-guard. Rashes and the pain from them are real when you're starting without a wetsuit. Knees/thighs/stomach area are all painful, but chafed nipples have to be the worst 5) Stretch! for both better performance and injury prevention. Without proper chest+lats mobility you will likely be paddling in an injury-prone way. Same with hip/hamstring mobility. If you can't comfortably squat down low enough, that will affect your balancing and you will compensate in other ways that will make you prone to more injuries. The older you are, the more important this probably is. I have my stretch routine I do on the beach while I am observing the break. I also stretch my hamstrings while on the board between sets 6) Related to above point, but learn proper Paddling Technique. I found the "active banana" position guideline from @How to Rip very helpful 7) Work on minimizing the time it takes to rotate your board and get in position. The extra 2 seconds you take to get in position to paddle can, and often will, decide whether you catch a wave or not. Best part is this is something you can work on even when it's flat or in-between sets when there's not much to do 8) Give it time. The long waits for waves to come during surfing can be the frustrating part but is also the beauty of it imho Might add to this list later myself, and please add your own pointers if I missed anything important. Hope this helps 😊
In Bangladesh, I've seen only a few content creators upload this kinda quality content. Congratulations in advance for the first 100k subscribers. Keep smiling and spread happiness. ❤️❤️❤️
This is awesome! You learned really fast. Something I struggle with is wave selection, especially in beach breaks! Wondering if you can share any videos you really liked on the subject?
The best one I saw was from the channel How to Rip on reading waves and this one th-cam.com/video/AOrqg_Q__yU/w-d-xo.html But I just looked up "reading waves surfing" on YT and saw a bunch of stuff I haven't seen before. Tbh, 6 weeks of daily surfing in, I still struggle to locate the peaks of unbroken waves and miss waves for being too far on the shoulder where the wave doesn't have enough power. Took me a full month of staring at waves every day to realize when it's too early to catch a wave, and more importantly when it's too late (meaning I should get out of the way before the lip smashes into me). Not really sure how to fast-track that process, other than paying a lot of attention to the waves that you aren't trying to catch and turning back a lot when you paddle to see how the waves you are going for develop
Radventures of Tintin Thank you! This is an awesome analysis, and detail of how to learn. I think I need to spend more time observing and making synaptic connections, rather than just trying to catch waves.
@@RichardKHassen You're very welcome! We def need to a bit of both. The paddling fitness you can build up fast with intense regular practice, but the reading waves just takes time :)
Do you have any beach recommendations for learning how to surf in Hawaii during May? I'm looking for a less populated beach with friendly waves for beginners
I was catching waves (I would say 60% of the ones I went for, or more on a good day) consistently. I could move around left or right without losing balance instead of heading straight for the shore, but nowhere close to making proper turns

the beginner breaks are always crowded. But as a beginner crowds aren't an issue
