Actually The night furies blast is not purple its indigo which is a more blue and purple color mixed together but thanks to the brightness of the plasma it gives off a distinct brightness cause of the fumes created within it to resemble real fire thats why it looks light purple when toothless is about to shoot the brightness also radiates off of toothlesses scales which are black yes but if lightened or brightened it shows purple stating which the color of toothlesses plasma blast is actually indigo which means it more blue but has alot of purple in it
That was a long rant about colours lol, if it has blue and purple, I guess then it’s fine to call it either or, but also the colour is a result of the flame temperature, so it looks purple when it comes out cause the actual flame has cooled down from the air etc., but blue is like the roaring flame the hottest part but gradually purple as it is shot out due to temperature cool-down

My theory is that night furies can adapt and evolve quicker and/or they develop unique abilities or weakness depending on the scenarios. Because the weaknesses Grimmel state was false and he kinda look surprised when Toothless cloak with lighting

And also no toothless doesn't have a fire jacket inside his scales yes but outside no it is shown through the series that toothless does not have a fire jacket cause he is meant to blend in with the night and use his invisibility cloak to sneak up on prey and enemies but if he had the fire jacket it'd just give him away and he never uses it when fighting the reason to this is because comics and books well yes they are based off of the series they also add things that were never apart of it simply making the reader more interested and as seen his scales on ever look like fire when he is fighting the evil alpha and this is because it is his alpha form as it is seen when toothless and the light fury are in the hidden world where 2 light furies were together it may also indicate that night furies stay in a pack to defend themselves and the leader may have a blue luminescent scales to show which one is the leader so no toothless and other night furies don't have fire jackets
Well end of the day it’s still worth discussing even if it’s not true, personally I don’t like the idea but to mention it is also important, I let my audience make there own head canon of it.

I like to believe they can use it if they are an alpha of the species but it uses up a lot of energy does it isn't used often only in a situation where they have to use it thus it's sort of a last-ditch attempt at surviving a attack

I imagine it is the f22 of httyd, stealth mode, able to kill anything in the air, and limited numbers
I wonder If the alpha dominance display was designed to help Night Furies to assert dominance or display intimidation while also giving extra power to do so

Unlike Kung Fu Panda, dreamwork did night furies dirty in animated series for not showing how powerful they are and made it worse by adding more weakness.
I get that but at least it helps to have some weaknesses as we don’t want main character syndrome and plot armour lol

Toothless is just very alert of his surroundings, but the light fury distracted him so much, he couldn't really notice

No actually because if they lived on a volcanic island they wouldn't have to adapt to the cold because the volcanic heat from the island is going to keep them warm thus they don't have to adapt to the cold if they don't have to deal with it
