Question: why is blade sheathing part of the kata? why would you sheath your blade immediately after supposedly hitting the opponent, without wiping it with cloth first? Blood on the blade going into the scabbard can cause all sorts of maintenance issues later on.
The way you sheath your sword shows your level of both training and understanding of basic principles of the fight that's why it is included in kata. Also, you obviously can not start the next kata with a sword in your hand :). In kenjutsu there is also a special movement meant to shake off blood and other remains from the blade. You can see a sort of such movement in some katas here as well.

I do understand your point, and as I said before it was my own way to appoint to the subject, anyhow thank you for your input, it is always helpful to know different points of view.
There are different styles of iaido. They had different teachers. Theiy are differently influenced by different people. Thus, you should not wonder "is it allowed or not". They both are 8th dan in iaido (and they are also high ranked in other arts like kendo). They define what's allowed and what's not by their teachings.

These movements are incredible precise. It's not supposed to be flashy. It's not supposed to be viable in a real fight (although the skills aquired by training this are). It's meant to be a challenging exercise for both body and mind. Every single detail of the form is important - if it looks easy, it's because they trained decades to make it look fluent and flawless.
I fail to see the art or the appeal, precise the movements may be they are not complicated or physically demanding, simple in nature and slow. It looks more therapeutic like slow tia chi than a competitive sport.
They look a lot easier than they actually are, because they trained decades to do these movements as precise and efficiently as possible. It's not supposed to be flashy. And yes, it is more about meditation than fighting but trust me, it can still be a highly competitive sport if you want it to be.
I've seen many of these demonstrations during my 18 years In Japan and these old farts couldn't cut their way out of a paper bag As to the comment praising their being able to make the "whooshing noise", any sword with a hi (groove) does that automatically.
Made a ceremony out of killing people with the sword. This is so stupid. It's a complete bullshit. The best swordsman off all time Musashi proved that two handed sword handling is bs.
Your comment is historically incorrect. Samurai never fought on the battle field with iaido. The arts of iaido or drawing the sword, was developed in Edo period, an era where peace was established in Japan. The only time iaido might have been used was during duels. Even there, contrary to what movies says, duels were mostly forbidden.
I agree with this comment. I was shocked to see they are ranked as 8th dan. As an example, the fellow on the left missed his saya when sheathing during Mae.
You can't really compare them since Ogura-sensei (left) is doing seitei and Ishido-sensei (right) is doing koryu. If you don't know what this means you can't possibly tell if one person is better than the other
Even if these guys are slowing their movements for the sake of showing off their precision, these moves are so impractical. They are so telegraphed, that if youre dumb enough to get hit by it, you deserve to be cut down by it. Moreover, schools where they teach this kind of garbage is exactly the kind of thing that Musashi criticized in his book of five rings because as he pointed out, they focus on all the wrong things instead of the things that will make you a fine swordsman. Its akin to a basketball player who is over geared, wears headbands, wristbands, elbow pads, knee pads, jock strap, mouthguard, faceguard, tape, impeccable uniform and so on.. and thinks those things will make him a better basketball player, instead of practicing his jump shot.
Their moves are not telegraphed. Try to imagine too you are standing in front of them rather than way back with the distance the camera provides. A younger person doing this who needs this to survive will be better sure, but these guys show fluid economic motion in the draw.
In a sense, you are right. Modern Iaido isn't meant to be a combative form of swordsmanship. It's intent is to give a basic idea of how to handle the sword for Kendo players and to develop a form of aesthetics and a sense of awareness. But tell me. You quote Musashi a fair bit. Have you trained in Niten Ichi Ryu or some other form of kenjutsu?
@@jwgoon Of course not, Iaido is the soft form of Iaijutsu which is the real martial art, like kenjutsu and jujutsu are the fighting versions of kendo and judo.
Something tells me these guys don't even remotely hold a candle to when katanas were more practical. I find these guys to be incredibly slow - true iaido is going to be practically impossible to see otherwise there's really no point in it being invented as a surprise attack. This isn't impressive, unfortunately - and it seems the best swordsplay died with Miyamoto Musashi, and apparently nobody read his books...I can't help but feel they're wasting their time with moves that no longer even preserve the art, and aren't practical - and therefore useless. These 8th dan's would get stomped by a novice in the Edo period, I bet you anything. Martial arts without practical sparring isn't even martial arts, it's rehearsed dance. Too many "masters" and not enough students. I'm literally faster than they are and I'm not even practiced. Being old isn't an excuse, they're 8th Dan's, so what is? I can only gripe if it is in slow motion.
There's nothing ridiculous about criticizing an attack that is meant to be the first to hit, I've studied martial arts history well enough to have an opinion on the subject. Read Book of Five Rings and it will mention blinding fast strikes, case in point. Considering it was written by the only undefeated and likely the best samurai/ronin in history, I wouldn't take it lightly. I just think the true ki is no longer felt in modern iaido, it's missing something. If my opinions upset you, that's a personal problem, I'm more concerned with the actual preservation of martial arts - telling me to keep my ideas to myself when they have grounded basis in fact is rather ludicrous, however. Don't try and tell me Musashi didn't practice quick-drawing his sword out of his scabbard because that's unrealistic. No, he has as strike called "the strike of non-thought" which he would have used for his quick-draws. I'm basing my opinions on evidence, you are just complaining because you're probably a practitioner of kendo, etc, and several of you seem to have quite the high horse.
Austin Foster If youre so infatuated with Musashi, why don't you find a legitimate Niten ichi ryu dojo and join. Musashi's techniques have been passed down.
It is not about the show, it is about the idea, the accuracy and the self control when holding the sword. It is way more complicated than it looks, even though it doesn't seem to be.
I think modern iaido has more to do with mental and spiritual harmony or something to that effect. A sword isn't a great weapon, especially in the modern day where guns are relatively common.
I like how the 3rd guy just came out of nowhere swinging his sword.
Yeah 😂
You wouldn't believe how hard it is to get the blade to make that "whoosh" sound. These guys are doing it like it's nothing.

The arts of iaido or drawing the sword, was developed in Edo period, an era where peace was established in Japan. The only time iaido might have been used was during duels. Even there, contrary to what movies says, duels were mostly forbidden.
meh
I agree with this comment. I was shocked to see they are ranked as 8th dan. As an example, the fellow on the left missed his saya when sheathing during Mae.
The guy on the left is very good. The white haired guy, not so much.
yeah sure you are the best
Are you a joke
I’m sure at that age things like arthritis become an issue
ds Bond he's old
You can't really compare them since Ogura-sensei (left) is doing seitei and Ishido-sensei (right) is doing koryu. If you don't know what this means you can't possibly tell if one person is better than the other
how is this impressive at all?
bullshido
What did you expect to see sweet heart ?
some ninja mambo jambo hollywood movie fight ??
Hahaha

@@Catubrannos Actually my question was directed towards @agonzalez8924 so I'm waiting for his comment which would probably never appear
I can only gripe if it is in slow motion.
sure weeboo
Why are there always idiots like this posting on martial arts videos?
You are so ignorant, please do us a favor and keep your ridiculous opinions to yourself
Musashi's techniques have been passed down.
if the samurai met the eskrimador, they will surely die. no way they can survive the art of fighting of the eskrima.
like ive never held katana but thats something i could do without problems absolutely no skill or years of training needed
Pff...you going to try convince me you were able ride a bicycle without even having sat on one before when you were young?
what is hard on swinging with katana? lmao dude
Martin Vančo you’d probably end up in the er
It is not about the show, it is about the idea, the accuracy and the self control when holding the sword. It is way more complicated than it looks, even though it doesn't seem to be.
Ignorande is bliss.
Thats damn boring
boooooo
And they would be trampled under heel in an instant.
Completely useless nonsense.
I think modern iaido has more to do with mental and spiritual harmony or something to that effect. A sword isn't a great weapon, especially in the modern day where guns are relatively common.
