  • Lovely Eartha describes one of the best recipes known to man; the man being handsome Gregg Baker! Only she could have been the 1st "Julia Child!" What a concoction! So sensual, so erotic, and just so "Eartha!!!" RIP!

How wonderful she was! I feel so fortunate to have seen this live in San Diego. She had us all in stitches while she ooooozed with sensuality, constantly stirring with a long wooden spoon. 😆😍

Ms. Kitt was an incredible performer; lovely, humorous, sensual and super-talented! This tiny clip of Eartha, about 3 seconds, shows her breaking the line to dance for Tony Martin. She didn't receive screen credit. Her smile conquered everyone! Thanks for noticing!

I'm amazed someone managed to sneak a 1970s era camcorder into this

Sadly there were very few video recordings, and all were by amateurs. Also wish they'd made an LP/Cast album of this, but no such luck. Eartha was wonderful, and thanks so much for writing!

This was an amazing show. San Francisco's Orpheum. The weather was perfect that night so we were able to go out for dessert after the show. They threw her around on that stage like she was 22 years old it was just amazing. And I don't think she'd ever been in better shape. it was beyond spectacular.

I had the honor, privilege and pleasure of being in this audience. It was a sublime experience to share space and time with these artists. It was a chaotic mishmash but for me stage plays are always heavyhanded and clumsy. Its about the art, the voices, the excitement which lifted every heart and mind in those seats except for the critics. A once in a lifetime experience. A meteor shower.

Oooh, this was a monumental event in my little life.
    Her magnificent return....sigh
    I don't believe I blinked.
    Timbuktu was a Bolero even.

Sadly, the only recording of this show is what you're viewing right now. Back in the day some of the B'way shows had to clear some hurdle; like 500 shows, etc. Guess "Timbuktu" didn't make the grade to be recorded. It went all over the US, but didn't do what "Broadway" wanted. I obtained this "Original Cast DVD" from a rather strange source. I paid, they sent. Later i heard that some of the performers were less than the originals. Promise to get back to you with more info, OK? Best always!

Fantastic seeing this! I was in the cast at the time, so I never got the chance to enjoy it from the audience. But the fact is, this is GREGG BAKER - NOT Ira Hawkins. They are unmistakably different!
Ira did the Hadji role on Broadway. Gregg understudied Ira on Broadway and took over the role on the national tour. Gregg is/was also a much younger operatic bass, while Ira is/was a musical theatre baritone. If you TH-cam either of them, you'll see the difference. Besides the fact that Gregg is/was 6' 6"! I've worked with both of them, so please trust that I am correct.
So although you posted this ages ago, it would really be nice if you'd change the heading and give proper credit where credit is due. Other than that - many thanks for posting it!
    Cheers!

      +operasanger Hi operasanger,
Sorry for the slow response to your message. Many years back I obtained some videos that were purported to be from the original Broadway casts of several shows. This was one of them. Given the terrible quality of the video in these, I assumed the male singer was Mr. H. I saw this show 2x in its original run and loved it. I may even have the Playbill around here somewhere! Hope you’ll read this and forgive my error; I’ll be making the change immediately. I’ve only seen Mr. H on TV, and his height wasn’t evident. As I’m a big fan of his, I have several other videos with wonderful Mr. Baker on my channel. I apologize for the error, and I’m grateful that you let me know. Mr. Baker must have been in his very early 20s here! What a talent! Best wishes, and please let me know that you’ve received this, OK?

I agree with you! This was a fascinating show. I saw it 2x! If you have time, please view the other 2 or 3 videos that I've posted with brilliant artist Gilbert Price from this same show. The audio quality is quite good, the video not so very much. Also, I've been informed that the part supposedly sung by Gilbert may have belonged to an understudy or alternate. Many of his friends and family would disagree. Delighted to hear from you, and I'm glad you enjoyed this!

Thank you for responding again. I have turned into a huge Eartha fan after reading her last 2 bios. I noticed you loved older performers as well. Is this possibly available on DVD or a really good bio on Ms. Kitt on DVD that you are aware of. I would love that for my collection. Sorry to be a pain just curious since you appear to love her as much as I. Thank you. :)

      +Rahmaiya Lewis Hi!
Will you accept my apology? I saw Ms. Moore in this show back in the day. I'm sorry that I can't find anything with Melba from this production! I'm really grateful to you for liking the anyway! Eartha was always amazing! They never recorded a cast album.
      Best wishes,

My Mom was Eartha's understudy on the National Tour. I had the privilege to be a backstage kid, so these artists were my friends and the theater was my playground. Thank you SO MUCH FOR SHARING

@baronochs You're welcome! I still see Mr. Hawkins on US TV shows now and again. He's still got that voice and presence. I miss Eartha a lot. Did see one "West End" show back in the "old days!" I suppose it starred many people, one was a friend of the family who played "Joe." The most memorable, to me anyway, was the lady who played "Julie." She was Cleo Laine, and was superb in the role. I used to have the cast album, but somebody pinched it! Best regards!

@operasanger Hi operasanger! You're undoubtedly right on this one. I know that people in this cast jumped around frequently. I only had an ancient "hand-held" 8mm clip to go by, and what is the original Playbill from the show. Ashamed that I didn't recognize Mr. Baker! I've got 2-3 other clips of his up here, dating from much later in his career. Wish I could reach you; your account is not available! Either way, thanks for your kind comments, and will make the clarification soon. Best to you!

    Hi 1927Norma,
Thanks for writing! As for the "sexual subtlety," who else could have performed this but Ms. Kitt! As for the 2 who are actually appearing here, I know 1 is Eartha. I've been told that the part that I attributed to Mr. Hawkins may well have been portrayed by Gregg Baker, 20 year old at the time. For other "choice" info, please just type in Timbuktu on YT. With 1 exception I'm the only person who ever uploaded anything by Gilbert Price; my favorite. Please see Timbuktu and Roar of...

    HI 1927Norma,
I'm only concerned that it might be a "Mommie Dearest," type of book! I hope not. If it's anything like that mess, I'd rather not know of it. Still, I'm so grateful for your advanced "notice" of what really may be a fascinating story! Hopefully it will be interesting, yet not incendiary! Thanks my friend!

From her other two auto bios Eartha Kitt did and some interviews with her daughter Kitt it seems that they had a very deep love and admiration for each other. I doubt it will be anything ugly since here daughter has the website on behalf of her mother which is a tribute to her mother. Peace and have a happy holiday. :)

She and her daughter were genuinely best friends. I stayed extesively in Eartha's house and even slept in Kitts room

Just a mention...I believe Eartha's daughter is suppose to write a mother/daughter book regarding Eartha Kitt. Not sure if what I read was correct but I think it is supposed to be entitled "Down to Eartha". Again I read it earlier and not sure you are interested but so far it's not on Amazon. Will probably wait once it's released depending on the cost and have to stay in my means. Peace sir.

This video is great. I forgot all about this part I saw so many years ago. I remember the part about "stirring with a long wooden spoon"...the sexual subtelty was great since it had humor and not vulgarly done. But who else could do that better than Ms. Kitt. Also Mr. Hawkins has an amazing voice. NOt sure but didn't Melba Moore start this as the lead then left it. I thought I read that somewhere.Does anyone know if there is a good biography in video of Ms. Kitt? Would love to have one.

"Timbuktu" is one of Broadway's legendary disasters; it played previews FOREVER, and I don't think it ever officially had an opening. Notorious theater critic John Simon hilariously dubbed it "Two Buck Tin". Eartha Kitt is an acquired taste; in my book a little Eartha goes a long way, and I couldn't sit for over two hours of her. If you want to see and hear the way "Rahadlakum" should be properly performed, check out Dolores Gray and Howard Keel doing it in Vincente Minnelli's 1955 "Kismet". The song is subtly suggestive, and doesn't need to be laid on with a sexual trowel, the way Kitt does.

Rafael Storm Considering it wad nominated for four Tony's, I would exactly call it a "disaster "
