Was assigned to NKP as a A-26 crew chief from June 1967 to June 1968. But liked the duty and the A-26 so much, I extended for one year and rotated back to the U.S. in June 1969. Many fond memories of the base and the guys I served with.
Wow, what a difference from 1967 to 1971-1972 and my year at NKP. Thought I caught a very short shot of a large graded area far from the rest of the base that MIGHT have been the early construction of TFA or what was, I think, called "The Project" by most of those not assigned there. I went DDA from Basic Training to TFA in September of 1971 and had no idea of where I was going or what I would be doing. I had an engineering degree when i enlisted, and was sent to TFA with no training or idea of what I would be doing, or even where where I was going until I got there. I was replacing a guy who had two weeks to teach me everything he knew and then was gone. Didn't matter, what we did changed a dozen times while I was there and it was always new. No formal OJT or anything. Just do it. The Tech Sgt I reported to was not cleared for most of what I did, The capt. above him was only cleared for some of what I did, and finally the Major that gave me the most work was cleared for everything I worked on and more. A very strange way to start off in the USAF.
i love you just landed in that flat field with ice chess (i think); in 11/1967, i was born at ls-15, north of ls-20a, and ls-20. thank you for the post... trying to do research on the BOOK OF LIFE.
I was TDY there Sept 67 when a 3 level opened an unsecured M36 Frag Cluster and they brought 6 of us experienced Ammo troops from Taiwan. Remember nights at Johnnys Bungalo in town an Ammo hangout.
