      @@EpidianIncreased unchecked immigration increases the amount of criminals in the country, this increases knife crime in both the immigrant AND native-born populations. Reducing your right to self defence as an innocent civilian also impacts upon knife crime. Not just labour, though. Tories, libdems, greens, Celtic nationalist socialists are all the same...

    Excellent video Paul. Being ex military, ex police, ex door supervisor etc myself, it mirrors the advice I always give, starting with the same #1 point you gave; “if you don’t need to be there, don’t be there”. The only thing that I do think is worth adding for successfully surviving a knife attack, is knowledge of anatomy and first aid - in particular self first aid. Whilst its second nature to people like you and I, it’s surprising how many people don’t even have a grasp of the absolute basics of how to stop a bleed

    • @thatgearguy
      @thatgearguy  วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      Great point and I am ashamed to say I took that for granted. Its the least cool thing to learn regards "knife defence" but probably the most important. A plate carrier and a black belt do not help much when your bleeding out.. We always had hemostatic packs, tourniquets, super glue and duct tape! Its a great idea to go on an emergency first aid course. They will have updated since I did one - and probably frown upon my duct tape.

    I spent a lot of time in New York City; days, evenings and nights and got a good sense of people and situations which kept me out of trouble. I never assumed I'd win any fight and you never know if there is one attacker of if he has friends. I relied on getting the heck away from any situation that didn't feel right and like you said I refused to engage with anyone trying to get me attention. I also knew the neighborhoods to avoid no matter what. I never carried a weapon and frankly have always figured having enough sense to avoid a bad situation was far superior to trying to fight your way out of one.

  • @ironpirate8
    @ironpirate8 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

    The gloves are a good idea as a last line of defence. One advantage I suppose is surprise, because an attacker wouldn't expect you to try to grab their blade.

    Great vid. Generally I agree with the VAST majority of what you've said, The 'controversial' point about the demographics is 100% true no matter what the politicians are saying! As for the point relating to drugs, I'm not sure about that. I spent over 10 years as an active user of recreational substances, 7 of those years as a full time heroin addict (Been 'clean' since Feb 2023). Never had any knife related events happen during that time. In general it's NOT the 'users' who are the risk, it's more likely to be a private 'war' between people who are selling. EVERY 'dealer' I knew always carried some sort of blade. As long as you aren't involved in selling, and you don't have any 'drugs related debt' no one is going to stab you as a 'customer'. There IS always the risk of being in the wrong place at the wrong time! Stab proof vests are WELL worth having! I've got a NIJ IIIa covert vest which I acquired at a very reasonable price (NEVER buy from Ali Express, Wish, or Temu, you'll die if someone does try to stab / shoot you). A IIIa vest is thin, flexible, fairly comfortable, discrete, and is also great for stopping a cold wind in Winter. When it comes to the threat from the unmentionable 'demographic', they aren't following any rules of logic or common sense, so IF they are attacking, personally I'd lose all of my own personal morals, and disable them as fast as possible. Stick my thumb is far into an eyeball as possible, kick to the nuts etc. You WILL probably get hurt during defending yourself against this sort of attack, but you've got a FAR better chance of surviving if you go in with the MOST extreme violence you can muster, just put the bas*ard down! Awareness of surroundings is vital, ideally in a pub, sit with your back to the wall, facing the door, stay alert of what's going on around you, who is there, any signs of conversations getting aggressive etc. While out walking, especially at night, stay in well lit areas, and walk with confidence, keep an eye on your own shadow as it can alert you to someone approaching from behind (Or turning round after you've gone past them). Ideally when on an evening out, stay as a group too. All of that is just my personal opinion, and I'm sure that some people will disagree, but if one person finds some of it useful and it helps them, it's been worth the effort of typing it out. @ThatGearGuy, again, thank you for another great upload, stay safe :D

    when I was a kid there was less knife and gun crime and we had far more guns and knives, parents actively encouraged kids to have knives .But we were not multicultural or diverse and we had far more discipline .
    my grandparents conceal carried pistols in the 1920s 1930s that was very normal if you were middle class business people, but again we had lower gun crime rate then up to 1937 you could have a gun for self defence .

    Never be afraid to run if you can. I was walking home through my local park the other week as the sun had started to set. Turned around and a young lad was gaining on me. As the path took a sharp turn and I was briefly out of sight to Him,I sped up onto the main road via a connecting path. Was a secluded part with woods on either side of the path btw .As I looked back He just carried on walking. Now the likelihood was He was just as fast at walking as I am (And I sometimes forget how quickly I can come up behind slower people in front of me without realising) but you just never know these days. I'm 6ft 2 and was twice His size and Height but it took no dent in my ego or 'manliness' to do this.

    US knife crime is incredibly low, ever one carries a pocket knife; at least blue collar world. However trying to engage someone with one could leave you severely at disadvantage. SD laws here dont distinguish by what type of weapon is used, lethal force is lethal force (though states may define lethality differently; ie blindness even temporary may be considered). Usually if you see a knife crime its a teenage kid or an junkie.

    I study historical European martial arts, martial arts treaties from 1500 is written by people who in their daily lives either through war, or living in a mediaeval town in one of the most violent times in our history, faced edged weapons as a constant threat.
    These treaties are instruction manuals and there is nothing AT ALL untested in them.
    They mirror a lot of military training today with arm bars, wrist locks, dislocations and so forth.
    After practically studying in a salle for a decade, I came to the conclusion there is no effective defence against a knife attack.
    There I said it.
    Maintaining distance is the only assured countermeasure to a knife attack in my view.
    Footwork is the key.
    Use footwork to stay offline at all times.
    Use footwork to create distance.
    Use footwork to manoeuvre obstacles between you… tables, chairs, pillars, cars…
    If you get sufficient distance to give you an advantage get out of the area if possible. Run.
    I became very proficient in the techniques, and even so it was not 100% watertight all the time.
    And that one time in 50 you fail to disarm or neutralise the knife is the one that will kill you.
    Not good enough odds for me.
    I don’t think I’ll be far off the mark to say the old adage of a shower doesn’t stab… and a stabber doesn’t show is fair.
    The whole premise of not showing is to breach distance to ensure at least one good strike.
    Like all things self defence… get a fence up and guard your distance as if your life depended upon it.

    Your point about elderly and disabled people is really spot on. People always waffle about women, but disabled people are often at far greater risk. Many have no way to fight back at all. Many can't run away. They're often far more vulnerable than women. It's perverse that disabled and elderly people can't even carry a spray defence object in the UK (or michod Europe). I really think there will come a time when populations demand greater self defence freedom in law as the world is becoming a less safe place. For now, we just have to work within the law and do our best to keep ourselves safe, but how many tragedies like Southport are going to have to happen before folk realise that improved self defence laws could help to reduce the potential for such harm.

  • @sparker68
    @sparker68 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Totally agree with this video and unfortunately many martial arts schools will address knife defence like it's a science but it's not. As mentioned risk assessment and situational awareness are No.1. However if a situation is unavoidable I feel distance management would be important but anything other than keeping the knife person at more than arms length close quarters management will require education and/or practice. As mentioned this form of combat is VERY random and should not be entered into even if you feel confident.

    The law on locking knives in the UK is beyond stupid. I'm quite old, and to date have never witnessed a knife crime, nor met a victim of knife crime, yet have been involved with many accidents involving sub 3 inch folding knives. These incidents would almost certainty not have happened if these small knives had incorporated a locking mechanism.
    As an aside, I hear a high profile celebrity is calling for all kitchen knives to be produced without a point!

      The law never intended to an lock of knives, that's why it was never written into the two UK acts that allow sub 3" moves (Scottish and English/Welsh acts). It was simply a court ruling where some stuffy, out of touchy judge decided that 'folding' had to mean always able to fold, this excluding any type of lock. I agree, it's a preposterous law; igr got a damaged tendon and huge scar because I had to use a non lock of knife rather than a lock knife. It's never been brought into statute law, perhaps because it is indeed preposterous, but unless it is challenged in court and succeeds, or a sensible government decides to clarify the statute law, it's not going to change.

The so-called 'UK knife crime epidemic' isn't a UK issue, it's an English issue and, as per usual, the rest of us get screwed by it. You are certainly somebody who should be listened to more than these gung ho "knife defence" experts. If that is your sort of thing, I am not putting it down, but it belongs in the dojo and the gym along with sword and buckler fighting, not on the streets for sure. A knife is a weapon of fear and intimidation, if some punk were to pull out a kitchen parer and I were to pull out a medieval dagger it would be game over very soon, in the heat of the fight you might not even notice if you had a severe bleed in the wrong place until it is too late. Unless somebody is rushing at you with a blade you are better of keeping your distance. What does scare me though and again it probably my reaction to the media and that is the random stabbings and terrorism from people who are clearly not in their right mind and available to psychology.
