Embodied vs Operational Carbon or Embodied + Operational Carbon?

Toby Maclean is the latest structural engineer of note, to focus on low-carbon buildings as part of our mini-series. He outlines some considerations that should be made, but are often overlooked in the quest for low-carbon buildings, and presenting some examples. Some of his conclusions may be surprising, some controversial, but all based on ensuring the lowest carbon outcomes.

Toby established the successful TALL Engineers in 2005 that went on to build a reputation for providing practical yet technically sophisticated and holistic solutions to diverse projects in the built environment and concentrating on design from first principles, with the firm increasingly concentrating on timber as a structural material. Toby established Allt Environmental in 2020 to atone for past carbon sins and to address the urgent need to decarbonise the built environment especially in relation to embodied carbon. Along with his consultancy work Toby is an advisor with WoodKnowledge Wales.
