Amazing footage, I remember this very well, I was 12 in 1970 & growing up in Sowood at the time, the motorway was a veritable playground for us kids, my Dad used to work for Briggs & partner a local haulage company in Elland driving aTipper truck subcontracted to McAlpine & during the school summer holidays I used to to work with him, delivering hard core for the road base, spent many days driving along the partially made M62 over the Scammonden Dam, which was only a pile of earth at the time, this has brought back some very happy memories of my childhood & my parents, which I haven't reflected on for over 50+ years😊

Great historical record. I remember them building the M62 not far from my home. It is in a deep cutting so we do not see the traffic but can hear the constant sound in the distance. It is very busy and makes you think how much traffic it has taken from our roads through the village. I never took any photos. Wish I had now but it was only after leaving school I got a camera. Thanks for sharing

I was 11 years old in 1970 that was a wonderful piece of history made even better buy the absence of sound or commentary have to say it made me feel quite nostalgic guess all of those earthmoving machines are long gone along with most of the people who built the M62.

I remember the day those graders came through my village to work on the Winwick/Croft junction, with the M6, they caused soo much damage to our roads and footpaths and remember the day that a face shovel created the cut under the A49 at Warrington...

I remember this motorway being built. I was about 6 years old at the time and remember seeing it in the course of construction. We take too much for granted thesedays. We should stop and appreciate the planning and painstaking work that went into our current infrastructure. As for the effects on the environment and habitat well that speaks for itself. Interestingly it took about 3 years from memory to build this motorway but it took about 10 years to widen it around Greater Manchester 40 years later!

Woulda loved to have heard those machines working . Those screaming jimmies . The 2 stroke detroit engines in the terex machines made some racket . The cat machines were quiet by comparison .

my dad worked on the milnrow/newhey section for Sir Lindsay Parkinsons, from what is now junction 21, up past the rakewood viaduct. the compound was where the rugby club is. I used to go to work with him on a Saturday morning, and clean some of the cabins out, they were basically wagon backs with a roller shutter door on, and a big gas ring connected to a gas bottle for boiling a giant kettle on.
