I believe in the show in a specific scene they let hongli explain why he did what he did and Ruyis face gave the impression “oh he does care and was looking out for me” At least that’s the way I interpreted it. I’ll have to find which episode it was.

@@mcrose9067honestly this is one of the times the Emperor tried to help her. He knew the evidence was against her, but he didn't believe it. But he also knew if he didn't "punish" her then the others would. He actually tried to help her somewhat (he ordered medicinal plants to be put in the cold palace). But when someone frames Ruyi for cheating on him he doesn't believe her at all. 🙄
@@aphreyst4551 doesn't believe her twice about cheating, puts his hands on her more then once(I can think of 3 times). I mean I can go on and on about his crappy treatment of ruyi. His little trinkets of help mean little in the grand scheme of his relationship with ruyi. He loves her when it's convenient for him and easily disregards her when it's hard.
This Drama is nicely done . All characters play their roles professionally . Even the actress played by A'Ruo breaths life into it . Isn't she one of the actress from Zhen Huan & Empress of China ? Look at the number of comments on A'Ruo character to understand her excellent acting .
The Emperor is a real puppets master !! and he secretly enjoys watching all the reactions of hate, happiness , envy and pride written of the faces of his "women" after he has decided, sometimes on a whim, to give a higher rank and status to one or more of them : then the jealousy of the others flares up !!! it is a dangerous game though, because several innocent girls, servants, even babies, have died resulting of the vicious , revengeful acts of that bunch of jealous b ...... !! ...
