After so many years of teaching at a university, faculty members are entitled to 6 months or a year of leave to pursue their further studies in another location such as a university in a foreign country. Perhaps one parent is going there on such a sabbatical leave and taking the two kids as an educational opportunity for them both. You can read up on this practice in the USA just by Googling "sabbatical leave".
