For me, one big downside is that the DAC does not take USB input. The USB slot is only for thumb drive or similar. Can’t connect to your file player using USB. So limited to only DSD resolution if you use AES/EBU. I drive a pair of Wilson Sasha with it. Volume usually at 54 to 66 when connecting to aurender N10
Boulder's digital input lacks RCA/BNC for S/PDIF, but interestingly, it features an XLR connector for AES3. This appears to be a manufacturer's insistence. However, connecting USB devices is simple; you can easily do so by purchasing an additional USB digital-to-digital converter (DDC), such as the Weiss INT204 or dCS Network Bridge.
@@feverSoundHK Thanks for the suggestion, I will look into it. I'm using AES at the moment, already pretty happy with the results. Just hope to squeeze more out of it 😊. But that would still limit it to the resolution supported by AES?
Some manufacturers with a more "professional" orientation might believe that bitrates above 192kHz don't bring substantial benefits. Some even argue that high specifications are primarily marketing and promotional tactics. Additionally, they may consider USB interfaces as not inherently "professional" due to latency issues. While I can't speak specifically for Boulder, this perspective is held by some manufacturers in the industry.
@@feverSoundHK What you said make alot of sense. Boulder started off from professional audio. Hence all their equipment only has balanced inputs/outputs. The Boulder DAC that came with the 866 sounds amazing to me. Just hoping to have more options to play or experiment with, to be able to make those A/B comparisons.
Great review. I bought the 866 recently. Very musical all in one with outstanding bass. The built in dac is very close to my external dac (DCS Bartok 2.0), so it’s a bargain and I think that new buyers should go for it. An issue I face with the 866 is that it makes a static pop sound when lower the volume eg muting or lowering from 70 to 32. And again when I raise the volume up. Not sure if you have similar experience.
During my demo, I didn't encounter this issue. However, it does require the volume to be turned up quite high for it to function normally, and this has been somewhat troublesome for me. If I were to use it, I would definitely set it to operate in "pure power amp" mode (AV Bypass), pairing it with a high-quality streamer DAC-preamp. This should provide stability and excellent sound quality.
@@feverSoundHK you could be right, I haven’t tested it in pure power amp mode. But that’s going towards multi-boxes, away from all in one, which doesn’t get better than this (866). I also have the Lyngdorf TDAI 3400, but it is less impressive in all aspects except for room correction. But 866 just sounds better even without room correction.
@@hkgoodman888 different countries, so not meaningful to compare. I have checked HK price, was quoted around 100,000. That’s very attractive compared to my country.
This is a good question because I've owned the Diablo 300 for quite some time and am familiar with its sound. In short, in terms of power, there's not much difference between the two. Looking at the specifications, the Diablo 300 has slightly higher numbers, but in practical use, I find the 866 easier to match and achieve good results. The Diablo 300 can sometimes exhibit over-damping with certain speakers, requiring more careful consideration in speaker pairing. Personally, I'm more excited about Gryphon's upcoming integrated amplifier, the Diablo 333, but that is a more expensive option.

Thanks!

If I am knowledgeable enough I would rather get another DAC so I can try different combination. But as a newbie, I would rather go with all-in-one.
Boulder
All in one 866 + 804 = WIN !!

All in one Hi End
Boulder

Yes, a little bit too much

They are just different sound characteristic, quality is absolutely the same grade
@@feverSoundHK Oh that’s good to hear! What’s the difference in sound going from the Boulder to an Accuphase?
呢部如果我揀會揀all in one.
