  • In preparation for an upcoming scout camping trip to become Saranac Lake 6ers, I decided to scope out the trails in advance(with my camera).
It was quite an adventure! There was flash flooding the day before, which it made it even more fun :-)

This will be an awesome adventure for the gang. I am looking forward to seeing what footage we can get with an actual camera-man and real camera :-)

Andrew, as far as the 3D flyover trail maps...I use free version of Google Earth. It's pretty cool and has become useful to locate several things when scoping out trips/trails. As for the actual trails shown, there are hiker websites where people upload there trails. If I find the trail I am going on, I download their trail they used from their GPS and convert it to a *kmz file to upload to Google Earth. Then add annotations, such as summits, etc. One example where I just traced someone else's route and added my own notes was at the start of this video: th-cam.com/video/lE-dsVJgYII/w-d-xo.html As for the recording, I just use streaming screen saver software. For windows there are several, including VLC. But I have found that recording your screen on a PC is chopping with any free software. I now use Quicktime on a MAC for best quality (still a little choppy, but is the best free software in my experience). Good luck, have fun!

Great video! I’m thinking of doing the challenge next weekend October 1 2016. Just wanted to ask if you have any tips and advice, like the time you started and did you run part of the trails or can it be done by walking? I am a beginner when it comes to hiking

This is a great set of hikes with pretty good views and various terrain to experience. The weather should be cool in October which is good, but amount of sunlight is shortening. The great thing about this challenge is that you have your own aid station after each mountain, so you can pack somewhat light and restock each time! As for time to start hiking, it depends on when you want to finish :-) If you are a beginner hiker, it might be difficult to estimate your pace. In case it wasn't seen, this is a total of about 31 miles on the trail and up to 10,000 ft elevation gain (I've done with twice with 2 different devices which gave me different results).
If you look at the inaugural kickoff day of this challenge, those that participate finished anywhere from 10 hours to 23 hours. saranaclake6er.com/first-recorded-6ers/ I know a few strong hikers on that list that took ~20 hrs to finish. Those with the faster times ran the flats and power-hiked up steep parts and didn't rest long on the summits. I leaned towards that method. My splits times are mentioned here(user: fosforo) fastestknowntime.proboards.com/thread/1173/ultra-6er-challenge
Not sure if you were planning on doing them all at once or over several days(my older scouts did them in 2 days). As for tips, I can comment on specific questions but would mostly advise you to hike as much as possible in advance so you know what gear/clothing/food/etc is best for you and all weather conditions and terrain you might come across. This challenge will physically humble you, but you'll be on an emotional high once done! Good luck on becoming a 6er :-)

Nice video, what was your total time?

Thanks, Mike. I posted my splits and total time on the FKT website(12.7 hours). Nothing near the quickest, but a convenient place to see other's experiences. fastestknowntime.proboards.com/thread/1173/ultra-6er-challenge They also updated their site, so there is a newer page with more results as well.

    Great video!
Could all six peaks be easily done in 3 days for beginners?

wayfaring stranger Hi there. Really depends a persons physical abilities and determination in my opinion.
That would be around 10 miles and 3k+ elevation gain a day. I believe most people could easily do it if they wanted.
Just for reference, I took the older boys in my scout troop to hike all 6 mountains in 2 days. One of them(a friend) had never been hiking before. He struggled, but was determined and completed them all.
Both days were 8+ hours of hiking, but everyone had fun!
