Just picked up Westmalle Tripel, and I'm drinking one with you, man! (albeit almost a year afterwards in retrospect) Great beer, it deserves every bit of the hype, and Trappist breweries deserve every bit of the respect.
It's on sale in every supermarket here where I live in the Netherlands. Not seen a crate of it yet. Have seen a champagne sized bottle of the Tripel too in one supermarket. Think it was 4:99 Euro. Yes I've tried one ! I also love how I just randomly found this beer by trying different ones. Lockdown today and I randomly look up Westmalle on You Tube and lo and behold I'm drinking the best beer in the world ! And I have one in my hand too now ..Proust !!
Great vídeo. Very well put. I live in Belgium, I think I tried them all. Nice of you referring the cheese, because every time I go to westvleteren or achel I bring the cheese. They are outstanding. Other tip was the Sint Bernardus brewery. Outstanding beers, the 8 and the 12 specially. Their Christmas beer is probably the best Christmas beer around. Anyway my top 3 is westvleteren 12, the 8 and Achel extra bruin ( the 9,5%) .Cheers!
Hi Jonny just bought your book, im planning on going to the Southampton Arms this weekend big fan of the channel. A bit off topic in terms of the beer you"re talking about but i've been watching alot of your videos. Drank alot since. The way you talk about West Coast IPA has made me really appreciate Punk IPA again, yes its the clique, its the one i first tasted and blew my mind and took me on a journey to find better or different styles whatever. But......i used to think it was a bog standard IPA for me and if i delve deeper i'll find something superior, ive realised its still up there with the best even if its in supermarkets. Just interested would you still think it is?
Hey Steven glad you are enjoying the channel and it is helping you re-evaluate some beers! We enjoy Punk IPA a lot and haven't seen the inconsistency many others in the industry have - i think it is a great example of the style if a little muted flavour wise (to be super approachable). Great by the pint and we are lucky to have a beer like it in the UK
+jazmox good knowledge! I'd say the hop aroma is still dominated by the yeast though, however fresh it is. When we went into the hop store it was mostly tettnanger they had there too.
Some how? I am sitting in Phnom Penh, Cambodia drinking Westmalle Tripel "Bieré Belge Trappist" bought from the Kiwi Mart mini mart for $1.70 USD. But I could be down the road drinking a local over hopped craft brew at a local craft bar/brewery for two to three times the price. Should I feel guilty for not supporting my local brewer...
You should drink what you enjoy! And if your local breweries aren't making what you like to drink, drop them a very nice email and see if you can persuade them!
Thanks for reply. It may be that it was too fresh (it tasted like it). I put some aside in the cellar, been sitting there for a couple of years, but I felt no temptation since - I'll give it another try.
When fresh they are a bit sweeter, but the brewery sits on them for weeks before releasing to prevent that. Have a go, see what happens! Your palate will have changed in those years too!
Nice video! Westmalle, St Bernardus and Tripel Karmeliet are my tripels to go for :) Actually, of all Belgian tripels I've tried, only two (La Corne and I don't remember the other one) were rather disappointing, all the rest were at least very good!
@@ReddoFreddo sure. But there are thousands of amazing beers made all over the world that are designed for that but aren't awful. The entire German and Czech beer market are built on such beers.
Love the channel, but have to get this in :) Just because Westmalle have been doing it for a long time, doesn't mean it's not craft. To me, doing something for a long time means you've got more craft. I just think craft is the wrong word to distinguish the small from the big breweries. Many big old breweries are much more craft than the new small ones. Just sayin'
Hey! THis is a super old video so I can't remember what we said but Westmalle 100% has all the hallmarks of a craft beer, however you define it. Apologies if we implied it didn't.
I don’t find it smells nearly as strong of banana compared to the German Hefeweizen. I disagree with the « clove » part too, it’s much more white pepper. Chimay Triple is way maltier.

Yes indeed, fermented with ale yeast and then lagered - which simply means conditioned for a long time at a cold temperature. Done for quite a few ales, most famously the Kolsch.
@@TheCraftBeerChannel So using backwards logic, does that mean that lager yeasts only ferment at the bottom due to the colder temps, and that in theory a lager yeast could be top fermenting if the wort were fermented at higher temps?
I can't really say it does. These bottles are kept at the brewery to bottle condition for six weeks in warm temps so they aren't ever really fresh! They improve with age if anything.
Tripel is the best beer I've ever had, hands down. Chimay Tripel #2, Duvel #3, Delirium Tremens #4. Left out Westmalle as #1! Guess others are Strong Pale Ales. Want to try/order to US Moinette, new Achel, Westmalle the monks have at lunch.
If we are gonna get super technical only Chimay and Westmalle are tripels in that list! It is very tough to set them apart but a tripel is usually a little sweeter and more full bodied, often with a bigger more estery aroma too.
