My late father worked at Cardow (Cardhu) distillery from 1955 until 1963, Cardow is the village where the Cardhu distillery is located, We lived at 2 Cardow Cottages. The blended stuff that Diageo were churning out when the Cardhu 12 year old single malt was running low was called Cardhu Pure Malt, it didn't have a green label, the label was a lighter shade of red than the 12 year old single malt and to the untrained eye both products could be mistaken for each other. Diageo only produced the Pure Malt in 2002 and 2003, it was dropped because it proved to be unpopular with whisky buyers and other distillers believed that Diageo were breaking the rules by producing this blended product. Cardow is the Anglicised spelling and Cardhu is the Gaelic spelling, both are pronounced exactly the same, Car-doo.
This was the whisky that got me started on my journey. It was bought to me in error as at that point I had not liked any whisk(e)y I had tried. This was my first and still is my true love in whisky and the reason I started exploring more. I've tried most scotches but my heart lies in Speyide.
You are totally right about it being so popular in Spain. If you ask anyone here to name a "high level" brand of whisky, Cardhu (and Chivas Regal) is the first one that is going to be mentioned. It's probably the best whisky you are going to find in anyone's private bar. I like Cardhu 12. My gf's father always keeps a bottle at home so I always drink it when I go there. It's a fine whisky IMHO. Love your channel!. Keep it up. I'm learning a lot about whisky from your videos.
Just tried it at my girlfriend's uncles in Spain. Sure enough, choices were Cardhu or Chivas haha. Happy I tried it though as for a budget 12-year it's a tasty dram.
Had a bottle last year and loved it. Just popped the cork on another today and I can fully concur with this review. Most enjoyable...the whisky and the review!!
Just pulled the cork on this last evening. Good, smooth whisky. Kind of surprised by the initial bite at only 40 abv...I would have guessed 43 or 46. Kind of spicy. I liked it.
sorry to be off topic but does someone know a trick to get back into an Instagram account..? I was stupid forgot the account password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me!
I'm very surprised to hear you say no caramel and no vanilla". I felt hit in the face with caramel. Makes me wonder how accurately/poorly I'm identifying notes
If anyone shakes the glass and goes to review the nose it will come first the smell of alcohol and not the other molecules of smell cause of the quick evaporation of alcohol. BTW there was no opening time for the whisky. Lousy review this one...
Horible whisky! Quite smokey and somehow bitter, similar to grain whisky!although pricey(around 30 euros/bottle) it s miles away from a glendfidich or a glenlivet, nevermind glenfarclas! It even tastes worst than a sip of cheap Grant s!..worst 12 years old whisky i ever had!
Cardhu doesn't have a hint of smoke anywhere and it's anything but bitter. It's a classic sweeter Speyside, borne out by every reviewer and seasoned whisky appreciator. It sounds like you tried one of the many fake bottles that turn up from time to time, made up with the nastiest blends I've had the misfortune to try. There are a lot of fake bottles out there.
@@gordyn5292 boght the bottle in a Real shop,in Germany! I know it s supposed to be a rather sweet speyside whisky and that s why i was surprised by the light smoky and sharp, bitter grany notes..with a slight hint of mint leaves.?..kind of... ..a sweet speyside would be mayb aberfeldy or glenmorangie but this...thing..it s light years away from them...hard to tell if the bottle is a fake or not but the label looks kind of uninspired and sticks somehow clumsy on the product.
@@perastotigautera1426 Well Glenmorangie and Aberfeldy are Highland and taste like it, more of a smokier influence than traditional Speysides. That flavor profile is nothing like the 12 that I know and love, certainly never mint and it should never be sharp or bitter, the exact opposite, in fact the first time I tasted it I wasn't sure it was whisky as everything I'd had up to then was bitter. All the fakes I've seen have been in proper licenced outlets but that label issue would set alarms off in me, they are all very well presented normally. I have two cousins that work for Diageo and the company seems to find their products counterfeited all the time, probably the price for being so popular. I would give it another go, maybe try it in a bar, in the right environment.
@@gordyn5292 To my taste buds Cardhu 12 tastes sweet, it reminds me of toffee apples at the fairground, it also has notes of vanilla, honey and citrus fruit. Cardhu 12 is a great introduction for beginners to a Speyside single malt.

Your videos are very interesting and very pleasant to listen to (no annoying music, interruptions, etc).

Taste is very subjective from person to person so don’t worry,, use the videos as a guide, not exactly as it is

Good review, but the swishing noises when he drinks it are off-putting. Why can we hear it so clearly?? 😔

For me, the Dalmore 12 will always take this prize
