CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Bishop (Robert Redford) makes a risky call to the NSA about the box, but hangs up before the call is traced.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this tech-thriller from director Phil Alden Robinson, a group of five renegade computer hackers, led by Martin Bishop (Robert Redford), are hired by the government to steal a black box, containing a code-breaking machine, from the mathematician who invented the device. The government is able to persuade Martin to take the job by convincing him that they will drop a decades-old federal warrant for his involvement in computer fraud. Martin agrees and he takes his team on the mission, eventually taking the box. Shortly after the hackers have stolen the device, the mathematician turns up dead. Before long, the quintet realize that they've gotten themselves into more than they'd originally bargained for, as Bishop's old rival Cosmo (Ben Kingsley) enters into the fold. The eclectic ensemble also includes River Phoenix, Sidney Poitier, Dan Aykroyd, David Strathairn, Mary McDonnell, and James Earl Jones.

This movie still holds up pretty well, despite the technology change that we've had over the past 20 years. It's a great film.
I think that's because it doesn't spend alot of time on the details of the specific technology, but more on the ideas and logistics of covert operations and catching bad guys. It's the same reason that you can still watch the old Mission Impossible TV show and find it enjoyable.
It also had pretty good writing, an all-star cast, and a good sense of humor, which always make a difference.
the story itself is compelling. the brilliance of these characters would be equally brilliant today, if anything, if you had this team now, they could take over the planet in an hour
holds up? no idea what that even means lol
@@kellymulderino7156 - To continue to be seen as good, to avoid seeming dated. Example: “The Bride of Frankenstein is an old film, but it holds up.”
"I'm interested in all kinds of astronomy." I love that line so much!
NSA Director: *_"I am altering the deal. Pray I do not alter it any further."_*
grew up watching this movie watching computers change so very much but the movie is still relevant and was ahead of its time
John Cusick And the funny thing is...if you want to do most of the heavy lifting on the back end, legal or not, it still looks a whole lot like the console/shell stuff they used in this movie. There were some liberties taken, like the decrypt effect and the little dot showing the trace..but that's understandable from a movie making perspective.
It holds up because a lot of the tech they use is physical technology, distanced from any particular era, it's about the general concepts involved (and most of it is social engineering)
Heavy heart rest in peace Sidney together with River Phoenix in heaven be missed
I pray they knew and loved Jesus. What's concerning about River is that his brother, Joaquin, admitted in several interviews that the Phoenix family were members of a Satanic cult.
The point is....I don't know where these actors are in eternity, but I pray they repented before their deaths!
James Earl Jones, legendary actor known for unmistakable baritone voice, dies at 93 (Sept 9, 2024)
IMO one of three best voives in all Hollywood.
Maybe dont say " hang up BIsch " when trying to be anonymous ;)
Loved this film as a kid !
"We turn ourselves in now, they'll give us 20 years in the electric chair!" - Mother
I remember seeing this in the theatre...a lot of tension.
It looked like the “progress marker” was hitting San Francisco.
That's quite a cast!
Paying homage.
My favorite movie would not have been same without James Earls Jones. RIP
This has long been my favorite movie and in this scene we are introduced to NSA Director Bernard Abbot. A voice of inquiry, one of enticement, hope, and then BOOMING showing how serious the situation is, and that voice lives on in memory.
This movie is SOOOO UNDERRATED!!!! This movie AND "Lock up" with Silvester Stallone. I barely ever hearing anyone talk about them
May James Earl Jones NEVER be forgotten; and may he rest in peace...
I worked with a former navy seal. And the opening scene when they were breaking into the bank they were talking about different trunk lines. That really surprised him, cause that would be a real tactic used in military ops
Man I love this film!!!
its funny he could hear bishop perfectly, but yet couldnt hear alll the other guys in the room? :D
The best part of this clip is the fact that their phone call reached Darth Vader.
"I find your lack of the item disturbing."
"Pray I don't alter the deal further."
" don't fear your sorcerer's ways. You still haven't found the item.
You call the NSA and fuggin Mufasa picks up.
I agree, iv watched it about 10 times. Always puts me in the tech mood.
“These guys are good.” 01:34 They are the NSA! “Enemy of the State” is almost this movie’s cousin.
The illegitimate son of the NSA is “Mercury Rising.”
And in 25 seconds at that point. Hardest trace they even saw....
It's good that you mention "Enemy of the State". Since we're playing "6 Degrees of Separation" for movies, in the vein of espionage thrillers, there's Francis Ford Coppola's "The Conversation" (1974). Gene Hackman's character in Enemy of the State is practically (if not officially) an older version of the main character from The Conversation. And The Conversation is about espionage and surveillance, albeit in the private sector.
I love this movie.
Carl is HOT 😍😍😍 😂😂😂😂
Well that was River Phoenix
That’s river Phoenix for ya
Fun fact: On the opposite side of the phone is James Earl Jones, an actor who voiced Darth Vader.
Bish better pray he does not alter the deal.
well he does appear to at the end
@axertrybal Absolutely true.
Oh, rearry?! No kidding?! Nobody knows that.
Don't you mean King Jaffe Joffer?
I never noticed it when I watched this movie back in the day, but dude is on speakerphone and they're screaming Bishops real name.
Back when dial-up was unbelievable!
And this is where the gameplay mechanics of "Uplink: Hacker Elite" came from.

The A Team meets Hackers
Hackers sucked. Sneakers was GOLD.
An exceptional film, especially for it's time. Can anyone recommend other movies that would be considered similar to Sneakers? Thanks!

Fantastic movie!
hard to believe now but this had the sweat in my palms
GREAT! movie.
Redford likes to say cute.
It’s a great movie, indeed.
One aspect from this scene that made me curious when I rewatched it recently: why did they use round acoustic couplers with that square headset? This was a prop decision. I don’t know if there were no square couplers, but surely they could have obtained a round phone prop.
In the movie there's adialogue like Marty: Oh so you're the guys breathing on the other side of the phone?; Client: No, that's the NSA ....this was at least a decade before Snowden revealed they were listening in
Biggest lie propagated by the movie industry is that they need any time at all to do a trace. All they do is check the billing records, which are instantaneous.
That's why you use a prepaid cell phone to call another prepaid cell phone coupled to a 70cm ham radio crossband repeating to a 2 meter ham repeater, received by another 2m base station, coupled to a 3rd prepaid cell phone.
Unless they deploy during the call, in the area of the 2 meter repeater, with specialized rf direction finding gear, WHILE the call is still taking place, the closest you could narrow it down is the area served by the repeater, which in many cases can be up to 5000 square miles or more.
The interesting feature of such a relay is that anyone in that area with a receiver would also be able to hear the entire call.
EDIT: also remembered Echolink: you can hit those 2 meter ham repeaters anywhere on earth via the internet and they'll broadcast locally, and your call could be picked up and sent on from there. Damn, I need to build this thing.
@@RobertMorgan- Do you work for the NSA?
reminds me of a book, "the cuckoo's egg", where someone was trying to trace a hacker.
the main problem was that he was in Germany, which still had an old-fashioned MECHANICAL system, where someone would have to LOOK AT THE WIRES to trace the call.
this was a problem: how to keep him on the line long enough without letting him actually steal important secrets?
the writer's girlfriend, who knew nothing about computers, came up with an idea, MAKE UP some FAKE secret documents and let him steal THEM!
he called the fakes "SDINET".
@@RobertMorgan reminds me of a line in an Artemis Foul novel, where a leader of the russian mafia would always use a cell phone in a moving car.
Lets find the troll before its truly a troll situation!
It took about 9 seconds to hang up from the point Whistler said they had about 5 seconds left ;)
Good luck! I'm hiding behind 7 proxies!!
Almost sounds like Mary's voice on the phone when first answered:)
Cattle mutilations are up. Fave line in the movie
That's a really great film.
2:10 if you read aykroids lips hes saying bull****!
The wonderful voice of James Earl Jones. One of the greatest actors of all time.
He said Bish
great scene
Gee trace the troll!

East Valley library. 10am.
Bish didn't hang up soon enough
If i had money I would remake this Movie.
They should have used mother's box truck and hacked into a telephone line at a junction box.
How can they get any data of the call being traced when the only connection they have is an analogue voice line?
They should have bounced the first connection through InterNic,... I mean come on ! 😆😃😀😁
Uplink game fans will get the reference.
great movie :)
They started the trace.
Peace on earth and good will toward men 💀💀💀
Is the troll telling the truth?
I'm tricky
Who's here from Cylonlab?
They should have hanged up in Tokyo and call back with different server locations
Is it

Find the troll
Who is the troll?
Fun fact: It is not possible to "mesure" if somebody is lying over the phone :)
You clearly know nothing about negotiating with the NSA
yeah and polygraphy are inadmissible as evidence bc theyre jonk
Fun fact : The correct spelling is „measure“ and „mesure“
The „grammar police“ (just joking man 😉)
@@cherubimX um might want to re-read your comment, seems u got a little too excited...
That was neither fun or a fact. Please try again.
One mumento pleas
"Mr. Abbott" is really "Mr. Jones", as in James Earl. Listen again.
He showed up in person at the end of the movie.
