  • Cool day, made for a perfect time to apply a Formic Pro treatment to the hive. There are two ways to go, two pads at one time or one pad for 10 days, and then the second pad for another 10 days. I opted for the second methond.

    This is my first time having a chance to confront you sir. I've been listening to you podcast for over a year now and I just have to say thank you. Thank you for all of the years of experience you have shared with us. All of your struggles and truths. For keeping me good company at work with something we are both very passionate about. You humble me with your efforts to help all of us including yourself. Thank you for all you have done. You're not the reason we have bees, (we made our minds up before finding your podcast), but you are a big part of our approach to help others in the future. Thank you sir.

    I followed the original instructions PLAN A. With proper ventilation. The next morning. I had hundreds of dead bees outside the hives. Yes, Queens included. In the fall I may try plan B. Lesson learned. Thank you for your work and all you do. You are a great help and influence.

      Larry Howard same, but last fall. I will be trying option B as well! Happy 🐝 keeping!

      if you use 1 instead of 2 it doesn't kill enough Verroa to be worth using the treatment not good to use a treatment that kills more bees than Verroa. Also putting bees under that much stress is going to shorten their lives. Also putting extra boxes on top allowing the Bees to move away from the treatment it's going to make the treatment less effective. better not to use this treatment at all. And use a better treatment.

    Make sure you remove the gloves immediately after you put hive back together. If you touch your ventilator, face, etc. you may get acid from gloves on them. Enjoyed the video. Thanks.

      Sorry to be so off topic but does someone know a method to get back into an Instagram account?
      I somehow lost my account password. I love any tips you can give me.

    Thank you for the video. What are you placing between the hive body boxes and perpendicular to the formic pads?

      If I can guess what you are talking about by the comment, they are Broodminder sensors. They meaure the temp. and the humidity of the hive.

      Same question. What was that ?

    I used two strips and it caused 90% of the bees to leave, killing the colony. Have you had colonies severely impacted with one strip? And, have you ever single brood boxes ... if so what are your impression? Ps .... I loved your podcasts!

      Two vs. One, it is a matter of preference and by experience, results vary. It is clear that the product is temperature dependent and instructions should be followed but what happens seems to be a singular experience and varies on a case by case basis. To me, that makes sense as we use different equipment. one box, two boxes, three boxes, mediums, deeps, solid floors, screened floors, plastic frames, on and on and on. All of these things will result in nuanced outcomes that vary. This doesn't even take into account the physical comb and number of bees in a colony being treated. I personally went to the single pad method to - one experiment with results and learn, and two because I had two circumstances that made it the right way to go - (one was temperature, and the other was size of hive). Sorry, long answer but it conveys that answering is somewhat complicated. As to single box, I would be leery. Seems to me that it was designed with two boxes in mind and if I remember correctly it is not suitable for nucs. If you had a 5 over 5 nuc, that is 10 frames which is equivalent to a single deep and the instructions (again by recollection) state not to do that. Thanks for the compliment on the podcasts, they are a labor of love. I'll be back starting this weekend. Had to take a break for technical reasons in my 'studio' if you could call it that, as will be explained in episode. All is well again and ready to get back to it.

    What time of the year would you do this and how many replacements at that time?

    What was that you put on the 2nd box that stuck out of the hive?

    Is the missus standing downwind ? Does she have a mask?

    • @KevinInglin
      @KevinInglin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      She was standing to the side. The wind was blowing from the back of the hives to the front. She did not detect any odor from the pads. I should add that I had the pads in the freezer. While I really do not know (Because while in direct contact I had a mask on) I would suspect that they were less volatile because of being chilled.
