" Scramble " is a valuable missile shooting game that you don't often get to see, but I think it's operability and scenes that scroll from right to left served as a prototype for later home shooting games.
Never played this. I was born in '83. But I grew up on Gradius and capcoms 1984, aero fighters, etc. I miss that arcade feel. Still solid experiences for gaming, just miss the social aspect. I recently grabbed ESP Ra.De and Espgaluda IInfor my switch, amazing shooters.
Every new game coming out in the early 80s for me was a quantum leap from the one before. Scramble for example is known to be the first game using forced scrolling.
Agree (born 1972) When 'Space Invaders" arrived in our local shop? It really was like Aliens had landed and left this machine overnight I played "Scramble" and "Asteroids" to Death! Spent most my paper round money on them! "Defender" was also was awesome but Hard as Nails....to get anywhere!
Scramble had the some of best color graphics and sound effects of all the 1981 games. Really fun game to play although I never made it all the though the maze part at the end. Thanks for the upload!
Years ago, I got my kids the 1982 Arcade Classics cartridge, for Gameboy Advance (oh come on, it was really for me), and they had Scramble on that. I loved playing that game. I remember hounding my dad for quarters, at a Yogi Bear campground, so I could spend all day in the air conditioned game room and play Scramble. The heck with all of that swimming, fishing and camping stuff, they've got a game room!!!! I guess I can see why kids don't go outside and play anymore. If it didn't cost me a quarter a pop, or I had unlimited finances, I'd have probably never seen that light of day either.
that's nice, just know there was many kids like you, Scramble was hugely popular and almost 30,000 cabinets were sold to arcades and game rooms in the US alone in less than a year in 1981
1981! Where did the years go. I used to play this in a local Police station as my grandmother was a cleaner in one in the early 80s. The cop station had a cabinet in their break room and I played it whilst waiting for her to finish work when I was around 10 or 11. I also played a table top version at my local squash club bar which my mate and I went to in P7 during the summer holidays from school after playing squash. I intend to get a table top at some stage to relive the memories once again.
In the UK we paid 10p a time...I liked Scramble, but it was very difficult- and yet it is far easier than Williams "Defender" with which it has certain similarities.
Wow, I forgot about this game. I didn't play it much, but it showed me how I need to get better at video games. I think my habit was to keep backing up, which put me against he left border, making it harder to maneuver against rockets. But I didn't want to push forward because a rocket could get me then, too.
Because of the beautiful time whe n was created, this game is the best ever...this game reminds me of some very beautiful times, which will never happen again.
I used to love playing this game in the early eighties but it was so damn frustrating. I never did make it to the end. I'd get to the maze but would crash in to the wall. Didn't stop me from trying again, though. That and Frogger were my faves from back then.
This was a great game, one of the original classics. It was very cool to find it appearing at my dad's rugby club bar, though I never got more than half-way through the levels!
I used to play this, and I clocked it. There was a guy that could get unlimited credits so many folk could get to the end with practice, and not paying.
My favourite coin-ops that I played like mad back in the 80s: 'Mr Do, Mr Do's Castle, Mr Do's Wild Ride, Gorf, Tron, Repulse, Marble Madness, Gunsmoke, Defender, Berzerk, Xybots, Galaxian, Pac Man, Galaga, Pole Position, Donkey Kong, Hunchback, Scramble, Pengu, Dig Dug, Ghouls and Ghosts, Joust, Track and Field, Moon Cresta, Phoenix, Tutankhamen, Hang-On, Space Panic. They were just some of the coin-ops I used to love, back in the 80s.
Great game. In our arcade a pilot would try to get the best bombardier to be a partner. I was the first in my town to figure out how to manoeuvre through Stage 5 and with SC as my bomber, we were the first to destroy the base. Awesome memories!
Can you destroy the base without being destroyed yourself? I often managed to reach and destroy it, but could never climb to avoid crashing into the wall. Luckily no ship was subtracted from the number you had left.
@@TheAnkMan Yes, you can definitely destroy the base without crashing in to the wall. It takes practice, but I have done it many times. This is also demonstrated in the video at 5:25

Just downloaded this on my Android and only played a few times and I feel like I'm 13 again this was definitely one of my favorite games. I'm about ready to go out and buy a old school joystick and hook it to my 60 in. Anyone out there what's the cheapest way to do this ??? I'm taking care of my elderly mother after major back surgery going to be here for 6 months or more 😔 finding these old school games brings me much happiness, any feedback greatly appreciated 🙄 yeup I'm a caveman with today's video games. I pretty much played 80s games from 10 to 18 then got into surfing and construction, stopped playing.. now that I have this down time with my mother it's a great way to pass time, she even remembers some of them cuz she bought me my first Atari 🙇♂️✌
Super Cobra was basically a graphics hack, and that it only came out a few months later. JPN RELEASE > USA RELEASE Scramble: February 1981 > March 1981 Super Cobra: March 1981 > June 1981

Brings back so many memories of playing this in my local arcade. Never get those days back again. We were so lucky as kids back then.
i was... 5yo,my first gaming experience. just found this again. happy, yet at the same time torn like paper on the inside
yeh and a load of 10p's inserted

Revolutionary, too. Set the path for Gradius, which redefined the shooter paradigm.

Its on Switch now, infinite credits.
The first sidescrolling game. (Though, "Jump Bug" was the first sidescrolling platformer.)

Memory unlocked. Had no recollection of this game until I watched the video.

Defender was the toughest arcade game
Wow I remember this game. One of the first. Hard as f+** but good memories of me playing it at the local bar or arcade hall at the beach.

The local arcade in our town had a Thanksgiving Day Tournament in 1982 or ‘83 on this game. I won $50 and a turkey!
You can definitely see where Gradius came from

Yeah the wall at the end always got me. 40 years of curiosity has now been satisfied
This was the first arcade game I ever completed. I'd forgotten how lame the boss was at the end with awkward placement being the only attack it had!
Scramble was one of those games that I sucked at, but still plugged with quarters for some unknown reason.
This was a great game, one of the original classics. It was very cool to find it appearing at my dad's rugby club bar, though I never got more than half-way through the levels!
Just used Reddit to figure out what this game was. I played the hell out of it back in the day.
I was champ at this, used to take the base many time.. it was a trick to hold the joystick in a special way before entering the base!
I used to play this, and I clocked it. There was a guy that could get unlimited credits so many folk could get to the end with practice, and not paying.
Loved playing this in Shelly's in Bodmin. An arcade in the back of a pet shop - puuurfect LOL

36 bases
The Vectrex version of this game is surprisingly accurate.
If it wasn’t called Scramble it would be called “BOMBS AWAY!”
Haha what a brilliant idea for a name! Well done!
There's a remake of it out now! It's exactly like the original one we all loved.
link plssss, goddamn i wanna play it lol
Konami anniversary collection arcade classics, available now for Xbox one, PS4 and Nintendo Switch
This brought back memories.
I won 3rd place in a summer contest at my bowling alley back in high school

Oh God we were young...
If I had all the damn quarters I put in this game back, I'd have a FUCK load of quarters!!!

Both defender and scramble where brilliant, but I found scramble to be way tougher than defender
Highest score was 230,000 in the arcade - about an hours play - so yep, we loved this one - Defender? I Was useless - lucky if I got 2mins play
"Giz a man" "Can I do your bombs?"
No big huge colorful robot at the end that blows up into a million more colorful dots?
I cannot remember the name of a similar game with psychedelic colors in which you can fire to the mountains too opening a passage.

I was good at this game, and often finished it. The bad part was the reward for finishing was gtfo. Game over for winning. Didn’t make a lot of sense.

Yes thats exactly why
Many of the early ZX Spectrum games used classical pieces reworked for 8 bit
use to love this game
this reminds me of some c64 game, but can't remember what it was called.
It was called 'Scramble'
one of the best lol
Anyone could give me a link to pc version download? Thx
