One of the relatively few complaints I have about JL/JLU is that their version of Hippolyta should've been this badass, instead of the virtual damsel in distress they made her.

She was a hero and wanted to save them, but after Ares enslaved her and her race and they were raped and beaten by his men and scrutinized by mankind as slaves in Ancient Greece, she decided they weren't necessarily worth saving, but she doesn't want the world to end. After she and the Amazons escaped slavery and fought back (which is what happens in this scene) she decides to live a peaceful life away from war with her child so that she doesn't have to see anymore war or loved ones die. Plus after being enslaved and raped for years, can you blame her for having a hard time trusting men when those type of men are the only ones she's ever known? In the comics she eventually changes her mind about men and mankind and decides they're worth saving, sacrificing her life for them, but is bought back by Circe. She stops hating all men after realizing that not all of them are like Ares and Hercules and becomes a hero again in her own right eventually.
