Closing out a trilogy can be tricky because there are a lot of elements that need to coalesce into a satisfying conclusion. Infinity Ward doesn’t quite get there because of a disjointed narrative, but keeping the focus on Soap and particularly Captain Price provides some emotional stakes that would have been otherwise absent. The game is really broken up into three acts with an extended prologue that wraps up Modern Warfare 2’s storyline, then the set-up for the invasion of Europe, followed by the invasion and the race to stop Makarov. There’s a lot going on and there are more playable characters than ever in this one. Newcomers Yuri and Frost get most of the attention, but others get to have their moment in the sun.
In terms of gameplay, Infinity Ward didn’t change very much. There are more weapons to play with, but the actual fundamentals remain solid across the board. Some grenade explosions are a bit iffy, but otherwise it does a solid job. Visually, the game gets plenty of variety with many different locales. The music is often drowned out by the explosions, but what is heard is often solid. The voice acting is credible thanks in part to some solid performances by actors such as William Fichtner, Idris Elba, Bruce Greenwood and Timothy Olyphant. They don’t dominate the story with their performances; they are there to serve the story in the background. Billy Murray is especially good as Price, bringing real emotion and weight to several key scenes.
There are some great setpieces as in Modern Warfare 2 with the New York, London and Paris missions being particular standouts. They keep the pace going at a strong rate and do not let up with some great and haunting moments. Oddly, Price and Soap's missions, while important to the story, are the least interesting in the game until the end with the mine. The epilogue in the Middle East feels out of place, but it does have a good final scene. Finishing in the mine might have created a better ending. Still, there are enough twists, turns and exciting gunplay to bring this trilogy to a mostly satisfying finish.
