Your dedication to fish keeping while doing your degree is impressive . My 2 tanks are cycling and the water chemistry alone has kept me away from my studies for hours more than I expected 🙃. Love from South Africa 🇿🇦

You must be my south African twin. I was the same, except it kept me away from doing anything. Couldn't keep away from checking the levels. Now I'm setting up another 2 tanks, but they are cycled with filters that have been left in my other tanks.

You should use a fine tooth saw or dremel to cut the pots in half. I've personally used a dremel to make caves for kribensis and it's a little messy but way cleaner cuts.

If I were breeding black rams, I'd love to get 4 pair from you, 4pair from Dean, put them all together for them to possibly switch up mates, and see the result!! They would most certainly be a magnificent combo!!

much easier way to split the pots is to soak them for a bit and take to them with a hack saw. Then maybe you can use pliers or the tile cutter type pliers to shape the pots the way you need them.

So the black rams, they aren’t really black as such, they’re more just darker heads going into body but still that underlying regular ram pattern /appearance.
I have quite a dark ram, not black in my eyes but one of the darkest I’ve seen in any store in Perth recently. I also had a m/f pair of electric blue balloon belly’s that I got well over a year ago that did not breed UNTIL I bought this dark ram home. Unfortunately I bought the dark ram I bought home assuming it was a female (therefore I’d have EB male and Eb female plus a second Dark female) BUT after a week or so I realised the Dark was actually a male. Firstly the two Ebs spawned, no luck in first attempt. All three rams were in together and a couple of weeks later I saw eggs in a rock so the EB’ balloon belly pair had spawned again. This time some hatched, out of 11 I could count I now have 8 juvies which are approx 11.5 weeks old. 5 are very tall in the body as from their back to under belly if you get my drift and most of those 5 are shimmery blue , some with typical ram patterns appearing. 2 others are only half that height and have much darker heads and 1 other is between body shapes also with a darker head. I unsure if the 5 with kinda taller body could possibly be a lil balloon bellyish which would explain the body shape. The 2 less taller darker heads may just be regular body size but it’s odd how those two are way smaller all over than all the rest (all from one spawn). There’s very little videos if any at all of young balloon belly rams in general and I haven’t found many vids in 10 week or so darker rams to compare my 3 darker head ones n see if they are possibly on way to being “darker” rams, although I’m 100% sure the parents were both EB balloon belly’s.
About 3 weeks ago I had all e rams back in my Kubotai tank together and the dark male spawned with the EB BElly female. In the first day they started (EB female started bullying the EB male ((she’d had first fry with) but now she’s with darky, lol ) EB male seemed very timid and was losing his stunning blue shimmer n hiding . She almost looked like she’d reversed roles and she looked more male than he did, longer crown and ribbon fins. I removed the EB male as I really didn’t think he was looking well, sadly he passed a few days later.
EB female and Dark male hatched there eggs n guarded them well…lost if fry maybe 60 or so.
Next morning still looking good. Day after I woke to see only half the amount but still positive …next morning I couldn’t see any fry at all. Searched n searched over next day and then found about 8. Did t know if mumma was eating a few or they’d just died.?
I pipetted out what fry I could find n p,aced in a holder. That was 5 days ago. I only have 6 fry now but that’s ok.
Over last 4 days the water was slightly off , amonia a lil up, nitrite a teeny bit up and same with nitrate. Water change…water change n water change over those days but still not right so I removed both dark n EB into a small tank. Sadly the EB mumma wasn’t looking right yesterday…seeming heavy in her body and swimming with head slightly upwards. Unsure if just age related or age plus water slightly off? Checked on her today she’s still alive but really not sure if she’ll pull thru. It may just be her time as it “may” have been for her EB first bf.
Soooo…where I’m at now…6 fry to the dark / EB Bbelly pair and I’m real,y really praying n hoping all 6 live and I get a few really dark x EB rams. Iv bred other fish over the years and had rams 16 years ago which spawned but never any fry.
If there a way I can send pics of my juvies n dark male ? I’d luv to get your thoughts on this juvie body shape difference, thoughts on the 3 darker headed juvies n whether that’s a sign of being a dark ram and show my dark ram male.
I’m Lisa Saxon in (fb)messenger …I’m in Perth ….be really helpful to be able toco late pics of your darker juvies at similar age…
I think I follow your fb store thingy/you.
    Cheers..Lisa
Last two days the water Paramus have been a lil off

    Hey Nick,
Just a suggestion mayve you could invest in a cheap grinder with a tile cutting disc so you can cut the pots better instead of uneven breaks or useless wastages.
    Sir ive a few questions
1.Can you explain if its safe to use the branches of the botanicals you collected or only the dried leaves & seeds etc..
2.Can you say if a female ram stops growing once it gets sexually mature and starts laying eggs?
3.Can you isolate females and power grow them to get larger sizes resulting in large broods of eggs?
    4. What age do you recommend breeding the rams so they have maximum growth and egg/ fry?

Hey I have a question. I recently got 3 fishes two balloon belly mollies (black/white silver?) and a painted platy. I believe the black b. molly and platy are females since they don’t have a pointed fin under their bellies and the other white/silver balloon molly is male since it has a pointed fin under belly. The black one is the biggest but not too big and it chases the male white b. molly. Is that normal or a sign of aggression? The black one doesn’t really bother the platy only sometimes but it always chases the white b. molly. Do you know what that means? The tank is 5gal

Buy yourself a wet tile saw their $60-$90(bought mine to cuts rocks for flat bottoms to aquascape easier) and your pots won't have sharp edges that cut your fish, no wastage on broken pots and perfectly even every time oh and the diamond or tungsten carbide blade will last you forever. Also wear respirators whilst cutting as the terracotta pots probably have silica dust which is extremely bad for your lungs.
Stop wasting money and hurting your fish do the right thing and buy a wet tile saw even a cheap chinese one.
