It’s Chip Stock Investor’s 1-year anniversary on TH-cam, and we’re celebrating by breaking down how semiconductor stocks have done -- and not just in 2023. Since 2010, chip stocks have been among the absolute best total return investments around, even surpassing performance of software-focused ETFs. Nick reveals one ETF that provided a more than 10x return, beating most popular funds.
Nick and Kasey then discuss their best and worst picks from the last year, and give a preview of what’s to come for the final months of 2023 and into 2024. With the tech industry heating up again, semiconductor stocks could once again be some of the absolute best investments for the new bull market.

Thank you very much!
You two have done really great. Keep it up!
Thank you so much!
Love this podcast. Awesome Team. Rock On
Thanks for the great analysis! I see so many just reading company sales brochures. Your analysis goes way beyond that superficial stuff. Thanks again.
We appreciate it Mark!
I really like this show. The information both of you provide makes a lot of sense to me as I navigate my portfolio and it satisfies my nerdism about new technologies.
Thanks a lot.
Happy we can be of help!
Always great to watch you both.
Thanks, we appreciate you CaffeineJ!
Keep up the good work guys
Love your honesty guys, no one gets everything right but your info is helping alot of people :)
Thanks Jared, we sure hope it's helpful!
Appreciate all the work you put into these videos. I would love to see your portfolio in an index format and also a brief section on trend analysis ie segments that might be primed for growth and your rationale behind it for instance Fab 5, why your excited about it etc ( you have covered this in videos before thank you). Thanks again
Thanks! We'll provide some more details soon! Appreciate your feedback!
Great information, thanks so much for this video!!
Thanks for watching Jen!
Happy anniversary for the TH-cam channel and thanks for providing always useful information! 🎉
Another stock, which developed a bit underwhelming is $AMD..
You're right. Unfortunately, AMD has lagged behind this year too. Not a terrible performer, but it has lagged. They really need to up their game in the total data center system dept (hardware + software).
Thanks for watching Ed!
Lagging in usefulness for data centers is concerning, absolutely.
“All aboard the secular growth bullet train!”
*Many companies running behind the train, trying to catch up.
Revenues *not* getting an AI boost in 2023 is a huge red flag for me. For companies in this space. For example it has me considering ignoring Cisco completely and just betting on anet.
I really appreciate you guys ❤❤ great information.
Thanks so much blue-light!
Thanks for the great analysis.
Please create videos in 1080p
Thanks Victor!
1080p is next level! Maybe next year we'll have the budget for upgrades lol
Great episode. What would be your ideal ETF? I would think it would be something like 50% IGM, add Tesla because it isn't in there, perhaps a bit more exposure to chips than what is in IGM, perhaps a bit more exposure to cyber, and a few smaller names?
We think ETFs are a great place to lay a foundation in investing. But beyond that, we really like creating our own "custom" index to secular growth trends.
Thanks guys! I have been adding to ASML on the way down. Do you think it’s falling based on technicals and a bit higher valuation?
We'll be addressing this soon, quite the pullback at this point.
Thank you! Unfortunately I found you only couple months back. I don't understand how your channel has so little visibility. Quality is very good & you are very pleasent people ❤. Unfortunately TH-cam typically shows loads of these hype channels which I'm not so keen on 😅
It's ok Anna, we'll take a smaller but thoughtful YT community any day of the week! Glad you're here!
@@chipstockinvestor Sure! I'm also thinking about my own investments 😀.
Great job 👍
Thanks Raman!
Congrats!
Thanks Chandra!
Tnk u nick and kasey for the 3 best calls and the not so great calls ❤
Now i can update chipstocks 😅 >> and update shoe stock crocs ? 😅
Like always ... good education from u 2 about chipstocks ❤
Can not waith to see your website 😮 10/10 points from me 😊
Thanks Kees!
Congrats on a great year, guys!
Thanks Marko, thanks for sticking with us!
It doesn’t surprise me in the least the semiconductor ETF outperformed the Nasdaq and IT ETFs. Semiconductors and chips are the backbone of all technology, basically anything that requires electricity for power does not run without a chip. Sure it’s a highly cyclical supply and demand sector but one can bet if the economy is doing well the semi-conductor industry is doing double that, and if the economy isn’t doing well there’s never not a time there won’t be a need for chips. I think it’s only now post COVID with the market so focused in on tech & it’s rapid innovation that investors are seeing what exactly has been powering it all along.
You're spot on there. Did you see our video on "infinitely scalable" vs. "the new oil"? Just in case, we'll put a link here for you, would love your feedback!

Love you’d shows AEHR to the moon 🌝 😊
Good job. One suggestion, if you could come up with a rating number say for example a number that is at scale of 10 with 10 being very strong buy and 0 being Sale. However this number should consider the fundamentals of the company, the future growth potential and the existing price of the stock.
Cut through the nuance and just tell you whether to buy or sell, you mean?
Plenty of places do that. It’s exactly what this pair is good at avoiding…
Thanks you!🤟
Thank YOU Sky!
Excellent
Thank you! Cheers!
I would love to know if you two have any bitcoin and what your opinion on it is
Hi Daniel, up until just recently we still had a small amount of Bitcoin. We have extensive Blockchain research we can share, we think it's the best idea of the last 20 years. It's a real shame crypto gave the whole space such a black eye in recent years.
Thanks for the video! From about this time last year to when Nvidia stock popped, I heard pundits saying that the new leadership in the market was never the same as the old leadership, so it wouldn't be tech stocks. That was from people with titles like Head of Strategy, mostly on Bloomberg. I don't blame them too much for being guided by history, but I believe they were too certain and emphatic about it in a changing world. I think there's a good chance that energy and materials will do well, but I've got more invested in semis.
Hey riffs, last year was really frustrating. For a brief point in time, the pure valuation specialists were in command. But unfortunately, any accurate analysis of a business is deeply flawed without a deep understanding of an industry and what a business does within it. We're glad we've moved on a bit from that!
We think energy and materials can do well too. Good news, semis borrow elements from both!
I remember talking heads saying that too. That the leaders that emerge after a downturn aren’t the companies that were leaders going in.
When I heard it, it was in reference to “faang” stocks. The n now stands for nvdia rather than Netflix, and it was always weird that Microsoft got disincluded from that acronym, but mostly this sentiment seems to have proven to be exactly wrong in the instance of the 2022 downturn. In hindsight it shouldn’t be any surprise that companies with wonderful balance sheets recovered well from an interest rate hike driven downturn.
It was probably just a case of the news following the stock. People were searching for narratives that fit the plummeting of meta stock, for example.
What’s your view on Tesla?
For lithium I prefer Pilbara Minerals Ltd which is a pure player and allow geographical diversification
On the other hand Albermarle is a kind of royalties company right?
Pilbara is an interesting one, smaller, but they seem to be hitting their stride. ALB is a miner and a refiner, so more of a vertically integrated business.
IS C3ai ever mentioned in your videos?
We've never done a deep dive. Probably just mentioned in passing as having a flawed business model that they've been fixing, or that it's a meme stock.

So you give Applied Materials a better score tha Lam Research? 🤔
At the time we made this video (end of the summer), we liked AMAT more. It has one of the best long term track records in the industry.
Without semiconductors, we go back to the Stone Age ..
We'd be pretty lost without them at this point
@@chipstockinvestorthose that survived viet nam know that this is a flasehood!
Falsehood.
Broadcom is done. Scmi is done.
Also please consider expanding your work (possibly by teaming up) to cover medical, energy and software industry.
We do the occasional medical and energy episode (Kasey is medical professional background) and an energy episode will drop later this week. We do lots of software, especially cybersecurity! Have you seen our community board?
@@chipstockinvestor Thanks. I just checked.
No Monolithic Power?
What is in your opinion a fair entry price for Nvidia?

Since I have analyzed ETFs … I knew it was Semi Conductor ETF
We figured you might know, nice job!
SOXX keep chipping huge return
Ha! "Chipping"! Yes it does indeed!
Any reason to prefer SOXX over SMH?
No we don't think so, SOXX and SMH portfolios are very similar and have performed in lockstep for as long as they've both been around.
I think SMH has the edge over SOXX because of ASML for the next 10 years.
At what point does SMCI become outrageous value?
Highly subjective, as this will depend on each investor's process and/or preference. But for us, it would be single digit forward earnings and FCF, with further expected growth over a 3-5 year period. But again that's just us!
Do you still like AEHR after the recent crash?
We've done a few recent updates, yes
what about $skyt ?
Check the video feed, we did a deep dive a month ago and have addressed it a few other times
AEHR has been cutting their guidance, what's happening to them...😢
We have several videos on AEHR in the last couple months, check the video timeline
small suggestion -I would rather see more stats and graphs or charts instead of corporate approved models staring into computer screens or endless shots of data centers!! great job otherwise! you rock!
We'll try to accommodate. It's just two of us though, there's no behind-the-scenes production crew, just Nick and Kasey! Thank you for your support though our channel is small and still improving.
💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
Semiconductors are like oil. A cyclical supply and demand industry whereas software is infinitely scalable. The reason the QQQ didn’t outperform SOXX is there are far too many poor software choices. This is a simplistic comparison.
ALL industries are supply and demand driven, not just semiconductors. Chips are not like oil. Oil is a commodity product used for energy production. Chips are the most complex manufactured product ever that harness the power of electricity to perform highly automated tasks, the basis of software. And software is only theoretically "infinitely scalable." In reality, it is not infinite. Yes our comparison was simplistic, but writing off the outperformance of chips as "poor software choices" is also too simplistic. Chips outperformed an index dominated by Microsoft, Apple, etc. last decade. Go back another decade, two, or three, and the outperformance of semis vs software continues.
many speak but say nothing
