    Personally, i think either ER and/or ICU is recommended before going to any NP program, regardless of school requirements. As a psych NP, i had previously worked in ICU & ER, and those experiences continue to help me to this day.

      I completely agree. In my mind, if you know what sick really looks like, you can manage those teetering or remaining well far more astutely.

    Thank you for this . I really just want to be a wound care nurse NP , but there's no programs just for that and I keep hearing that FNP program is overflooded and everyone does it. It just deterred me until I remembered a NP was doing wound care at the wound clinic , but she was ACNP

    There are “brick and motor” schools here in Cali that allow you to apply for BSN to MSN-FNP with no experience at all. I have a friend who did just that and I agree it’s terrifying!

      As time goes on it keeps getting worse. Ivy League school I looked at the other day has waived the gre/gmat requirement.

    Hey, Bree. I agree re: the online vs black-n-mortar. I'm in central Arkansas. Last year, I met a young graduate who had just obtained her BSN and I was super envious. I'm just finishing up my Associate's in sciences. I became less envious when she told me a little about her school, that it was all online and super easy. I remember thinking, there is no way I'm going that route because I have to consider the integrity of what I learn, especially as I aim to teach after my body becomes too old to handle the bustle of nursing. Mostly, I am flabbergasted that it is a thing that is available. How can you get your BSN, which is in fact nursing school full of clinical trials, yet it is all online? I did a lot of my classes online, but, anatomy & physiology I & II were in-person classes and so were the labs. I did chem online (because I didn't sign up for the class in time), and that proved to be a problematic A, but I did the chem lab in person and earned a 97.73. There's no way I could've done that lab online and received that high of an A.
    Definitely keep preaching this. I like how you worded it: "You are spending your time and your money" for what could possibly be a sub-par education.

      The schools use greed to drive false promises and offer easy degrees to make profits. In large part I blame them for the propaganda they sell to newbies who fall into the trap. It’s deplorable really. In the end sets up the rn/np for a career they are unprepared to handle who realize it quickly and feel overwhelmed and unsatisfied. It sets up the patients for poor care. It serves no one aside from the schools.

    Is that legal that these programs have no nursing experience for an MSN program? That’s crazy!

    I want to work outpatient cardiology. should I even bother pursuing acnp and doing clinicals inpatient when I strictly want to work outpatient ? Or should I just go the FNP route ? I’m currently a cardiac RN

      In that case I would do FNP or adult but not acute

    Hi Bree, insightful video! I wanted your opinion on my experience. I start my Acute Care DNP program (at Columbia University) this summer. I have two years of experience. My first year was in a very busy med-surg (primarily surgical unit) with a 9:1 ratio on a good night! Although it was primarily pre-op/post op surgery patients, we also had medicine patients (HTN, DM,and sepsis management). My second year and current position is an inpatient palliative care/hospice unit - dealing with ventilated patients on multiple drips (hydromorphone, fentanyl, Vaso, Levo, versed, propofol etc), it’s very much like a step down unit! So a lot of EOL issues and family dynamics. Do you think this is decent experience or should I consider a transition to an ICU proper? Thank you for your content! It is absolutely valuable!

    • @BreeJuskowiak
      @BreeJuskowiak  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Michael! I think if you have the time/opportunity to get in some ICU proper experience it will help you both from a school/boards experience as well as job acquisition standpoint. However, it does sound like you have pretty decent exposure to at least baseline level interaction with vents and drips so this is good. Bottom line: would be really good to do it, but if you can’t you’ll probably be ok. You’ll have a steeper learning curve and less robust resume (only if you really want to go into icu work) but you’ll be ok.
      Congratulations on excellent school choice!

      @@BreeJuskowiak Thanks Bree! I am definitely excited. My intention is to continue on in Palliative care as an NP however I do realize that this may change as I get more exposure as an NP student. Thanks for the great content, it will definitely serve students well as we move forward.

    I just graduated with an AGACNP degree and passed boards. I only have (2) years step-down and (7) years med-surge. What can I do to compensate for lack of ICU/ER experience and be seen as competitive? Thank You!
    My school required (2) years of acute care. They considered my step down and med surge. It was an online program from a reputable school in Texas.

    This is going to sound like a reallllly dumb question but to work as a hospitalist would that require a FNP or AGACNP track?

    • @BreeJuskowiak
      @BreeJuskowiak  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not dumb. It’s confusing for everyone. AGACNP for anything that requires rounding in a hospital.

      1. What do you want to do? What specialty do you want?
      2. I don’t know that specific school
      3. If you want to work in a small niche. Say critical care or GI, something that many people want to do or there aren’t many positions for a competitive school gives you a leg up in the market.
      4. I went to Emory. IMO one of the best. I had a wonderful experience. However, it is pricey. The way I see it, I had a five year plan for loan repayment and better odds of finding a job. Plus, they placed my clinicals and every clinical is a job interview so lots of access to high quality learning and employment options. For me it was the right choice.

    Also regarding school reputation I got into Penn State (brick and mortar program) for FNP. I also went there for my BSN. I couldn’t apply to there AGACNP program because it required 2 years of icu experience and I only had 1 at the time of application.
    I was also accepted into University of Cincinnati’s FNP program which is online. I’m having major doubts about this program from some online feedback I’ve heard.
    Lastly I got into Clarkson College’s Acute Care NP program which is online. I’ve haven’t been able to find as much feedback about this program as I’d like to unfortunately.
    I don’t know which school to go with…I’m leaning towards Penn State and they have a AGACNP post masters certificate that I can pursue after completing the FNP. Im that person that is having a terribly hard time choosing between fnp and AGACNP 🙁.
    Have you heard of any of the schools I’ve named? Thoughts …feedback would be appreciated
