    Yasu, can you clarify what print time / exposure time improvements you found for your test resin using the new mono screen on og photon?

    • @HiroCreations
      @HiroCreations  3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I knew I had forgot something lol! Exposure times will vary from resin to resin. But here are my benchmark times with Ministry of Resin Durable but you should be able to extrapolate the ratio between the FHD mod and other printers and mods.
      FHD Photon Mod: 27s Base Layers / 3s Layers
      LD-002H: 21s Base Layers / 2.3s Layers
      Photon Mono: 24s Base Layers / 2.8s Layers
      My 6" Mono Photon Mod: 16s Base Layers / 1.6s Layers
      I will pin this to the top for other folks.

    • @travispike5516
      @travispike5516 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@HiroCreations Very comparable to other mono exposure times. I suspect that resin would be 8-10 seconds or more on the OG Photon RGB screen... so print time likely reduced to third or less... that is worth the loss of 15um resolution to me!

    This is great news! I heard about the mono screens a while back and stopped using my late 2019 photon (not photon S) hoping I could just replace it with a mono screen.. Here we are 2 years later and I may finally dust it off and get back into resin printing!

    Thanks for making this video, Yasu ! I got a Photon during Black Friday last year, and didn't consider the 'mono' options because I run my printer while I'm at work so I don't mind the longer print times. Given that the screen is basically a consumable, this makes me think that buying a Photon, waiting for the original screen to die, and then upgrading to a mono screen is more economical on the long run than buying the upgraded models upfront.

    • @HiroCreations
      @HiroCreations  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yep! You will also find that the mono screens have a crazy long life--especially if they have tempered glass protection which makes cleaning up resin spills easy. I have a 6" mono screen that has about 5.5k hours on it now.

    The Elegoo Mars (1) came with 3 different boards. Board C does not require that adapter for the original screen. (Easiest way to identify it vs. A and B is the wire connects to the outside of the board instead of the inside.

    Thank you very much for making this video. I am not too tech savvy, but from what I understand, to replace the screen on my anycubic photon with this mono screen, I have to replace the screen, add the adapter and flash the system. Again thank you for the video, I was looking forward to it.

    • @HiroCreations
      @HiroCreations  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep, if you plan to use the original control board on the Photon (make sure its the OG version and not the newer ones that were made late 2019/2020 which uses a custom board) then its just change screen, use the adapter, and flash the firmware.

    I just heard about this upgrade today and after watching your video, I went ahead and ordered it from Chitu systems. The RGB screen on my OG photon still works, but cutting the exposure time down that much would be amazing. Now I'm looking at getting a better leveling system and starting to wonder about the lift system itself.

  • @peshozmiata
    @peshozmiata 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is definitely worth it if you already own a Photon or Mars, the cost is only about 30% more than getting a replacement RGB screen for those printers. By comparison the 6'' mono screens are roughly twice the price of the 5.5'' RGB's. At first i thought it was a copout seeing the lower resolution, but after i realized it's only a 15 micron difference i think the reduction is negligible. You can get pretty good prints with anything that's below 100 microns.

      The actual resolution on the mono screens vs colour screens is better than it appears. I think the 2K colour screens needing 3 pixels to display one white pixel makes them effectively lower resolution than the FHD mono screens. My prints seemed better with detail after the mod.

  • @oleurgast730
    @oleurgast730 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Quite a nice mod. I have my photon 2 years now - but did not used it, as do some homeimprovemet since than and want my second bathroom to become a resin printer room to avoid any fumes (and use an old CPAP medical unit to provide me with clean air from another room). So the Photon will get this upgrade before it's first use.
    Monday anouther Aliexpress sale starts. The price will be €36,75 incl. VAT - and with some coupons it will be even lower. So I will definitly buy it.
    But the perfect smal resin printer in my opinion still is not published yet. The Anycubic Photon Ultra starting on Kickstarter in September is the next step - but I would like a 4k DLP instead, double size - but zoomable to standard size with double the resolution. Also the tilt mechanism the SL1 uses would be a nice feature (1. it is faster than z-lift. 2.tilting means less stress for the FEP, lasting longer 3. much less risk of print being torn of the buildplate). I am sure we will se this in the future - but might take a few years. So use the photon as long as possible definitly is a good idea, as with DLP there is an increase in quality over LCD - and if they go 4k, this will be another quantumleap.

    Thanks for this video. Very helpful. However, the Chitu site explicitly states that this screen may not work on some early models of Mars because they use an older V1 board. They show pictures of the boards on the page and indicate that it only works on the V2 boards. Worth bearing this in mind.

    1) is there a 4k 5,5 screen? I heard rumors.
    2) what is the combination of screen/board that currently gives the smallest pixel size numbers-wise?
    3) in your opinion, what is the morst future proof approach (OG photon): a) replace the screenplate for a bigger hole (along with lightsource+board+screen) b) keep screen plate and just upgrade board+screen and eventually lightsource ?

      1. BOE makes a 5.5" 4k but it's not compatible with Chituboards and requires a dedicated HDMI driver board.

    1) So if I have photon photon 2019/2020 do I need to replace the board to v3 to make this works?
    2) If want to combine 5.5 FHD and new parallel light source (the one from the previous mod) is board replacement necessary?
    3) Which of your two mods prints better in terms of quality (if noticeable)? I've got original sonic mini which I believe have the same screen (5.5" FHD) and although prints are crisper (imo due to the better light source) the print lines (limited XY resolution) are more noticeable.

    • @HiroCreations
      @HiroCreations  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1. You may want to double check, I know Anycubic had comingled stock of either their custom Photon S boards or the Chitu V1 boards for a very long time. There is quite a few pics and discussions of how to identify the Photon S boards vs the V1 boards.
      2. Nope the stock boards are good to about 60w-70w of power consumption--if you need more than that you can always power the light source from the power supply directly and use a mosfet or quality SSR to control the light source via the board.
      3. I honestly am having a really hard time seeing any real differences between the FHD screens and the 6" monos save for a few use cases like super simple shapes like cylinders, spheres etc, but I am still not certain that is also the result of print orientation causing issues. If I remember correctly the Sonic Mini does not have AA enabled so very noticeable voxeling may be the result of no AA.

I'm also at 14 seconds exposure per layer is that normal (stock og photon lights)? the videos are awesome ;)

    • @HiroCreations
      @HiroCreations  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The resolution of 1920 x 1080 listed on the firmware and slicer parameters has to match the mono screen resolution or the printer won't run.
      You don't have to change the board if you are only changing the light source as the stock board outputs the same range of power output as the V3 boards do.
      14 second layers sounds about right if you are running a RGB screen, if you are using a upgraded mono screen like the 5.5" version mentioned in the video or the newer 6" screens then it will be too high of a cure time (3-5 seconds is the expected norm for mono screens).

    Thank you for the awesome video, I did by the kit before I found this video of yours. luckily I got the whole kit as I had the photon s board. I do have a couple issues that are popping up. 1) I had to use a generic printer profile in chitibox as I could not save the files in .ctb or .cbdllp to work with the board. 2) when my print finishes the print bed rasies and hits the stop of my photon and the motor binds for a few seconds before shutting off. Yeah most Elegoo Mars printers won't need an adapter--easy way to double check is to see if the end of the ribbon cable on your old screens were straight or L shaped at the end of the cable. If its L shaped you need the adapter, if it was straight then no adapter was needed.

    Hey Yasu, I am having huge issues with the prints sticking constantly to the FEP instead of the bed. I have revealed the bed a stupid amount of times with different amounts of pressure and angles. I noticed that the screen requires to be mounted by tape just like in your case - which may introduce some angles - but I thought that this won't make any difference since it is the relative angle between the screen that matters. So I don't think it's that. I managed to get one relatively successful print in 20 tries. I couldn't even print 75% of all tries the flat exposure test unless i absolutely clamped the living hell out of the screen and the bed. Any hints?

The "new" firmware has 3 files, a .LCD file, a .CBD file and a .BIN file (actually 3 .BIN depending on the size of your touchscreen). It was still (barely) usable, but until I realized that I was a bit worried. I was able to "print" the other files (since I wasn't positive which it autoloaded, I did all 3). After removing the files from the USB, I rebooted the system and had a normal UI back again. Checked the firmware version and it was the new one. There is a nice troubleshooting guide on the Chitu site here: www.chitusystems.com/knowledge-base/error-type-lcd-error-code-t_-l_/
      Next level up is to reach out to their customer support for more troubleshooting help.

    i changed out my screen and had to change mother board too for the chitu v3 board . went to re calibrate the levels and z home sends the plate up not down , is this a firmware issue or should i have switched pins on z motor compared to photon s board

    • @HiroCreations
      @HiroCreations  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah for whatever reason, the stock firmware loaded on the board assumes the polarity of the motor is reversed. There are two easy fixes either changing line M8004 from 1 to -1 (OR -1 to 1) in the machine parameters gcode file that controls the firmware settings. (you want to modify your backup that you generate by running a gcode file with only the backup command M8512 'yourbackupfilename.gcode' )
      Or if its easier you change the pin configuration on the motor to be the exact reverse.

    Hi. I have installed the 5.5FHD screen, V3 board and new 2.8 touch screen. Updated the firmware and used your Chitubox profile but my Photon won't read the print files. Do I need to update something?

    • @HiroCreations

      What file are you exporting in chitubox? It seems like with the newer firmware updates that .ctb slices is the only files that the V3 will read and accept now.

    So i bought the 5.5 FHD Mono upgrade for my Photon (i thought i had the OG one), but it seems like I had the newer second version? Does this mean to make it work I need to buy the new 2.8" Screen and V3 Chitu Mobo?
    Thanks!

    • @HiroCreations
      @HiroCreations  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is the control board PCB green and have an anycubic logo written on it? If so, that's the newer fauxton/photon S type board which won't work at all with the screen. You sadly would have to swap to a Chituboard v3 and 2.8" touchscreen.

  • @JavierLopezElMagnate

    Hey there... So I went ahead and swapped screens, my OG photon's screen had blemishes on it. Used your instructions, but i'm having an issue with the firmware. I've tried a couple of USB drives, tried putting the .cdb file but my printer doesn't see this particular file. Anything else is fine though. I went back to anycubic's site and noticed their firmware files are .bin. Wondering if i'm supposed to change the extension?

    • @HiroCreations
      @HiroCreations  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wierd, bin files are the standard for making changes to the UI menu or bootup logo image. CBD should be the core firmware files for making changes to the FPGA. I'd recommend reaching out to Chitu support and see what they have to say as the files should be visible and executable.
