Thanks for this video. Coming from a Pixel 3a, when google cancelled support, I switched it to lineageos, and used the pixel for 2 more years. But then the battery was broken, and I found no one who could renew the battery. I now use a FP5 and I am super happy. For our channel we use a gopro because it's handling is much easier and better then a smartphone for taking shots, so yes, I second all your arguments.
It’s funny to hear people complain about the camera, because I would actually prefer if it were even more modular and I could order one without a camera entirely. I still might pick one up since they should be for sale in the US relatively soon. Crazy how all the phone carriers push the cheap crap yet won’t even offer a no-frills flip phone anymore, much to the dismay of my mother when they turned off all the towers for her 3G phone and then didn’t have anything comparable to replace it.
What's your opinion about the LTT review of the FP5? I personally think that most of the extra costs associated with the Fairphones exist purely because all of their structures and certifications exist in a parallel space for a relatively small quantity of phones. Like, if let's say ALL Cobalt was mined under humane conditions, would the 0.5g per device really increase the price per phone that much? Better repairability and unlockable bootloaders could also just be mandated by law for all OEMs. The one thing that should actually be avoidable and doesn't have to be is the software quality of the FPs. You can't ship it with a glorified beta software, fix it after 6 months and then introduce new major bugs two Android updates down the line. I don't think it is entitled to expect it to just work. And I've heard that from many people.

Yeah, agree! It's a huge deal in Germany too because net providers offer deals every year and you don't even own that phone! By the time you have paid it off, you're hooked to a new one, and people don't even know why. But it's basically "the phone is for free with the 1y contract" but then you pay 30-50€/mtl for the damn phone... Could've gotten a phone without a contract and just saved for a year
@@UndineAlmani Exactly! Just crazy if you think about it. The "everyone does it, so it's normal, so I should do it too mentality". It is the same here in the Netherlands. Yeah eventually free for the provider, not for the customer lol.
I have an iPhone 2020 SE which I purchased when the phone was released almost 4 years ago to the day and I’ll be looking to replace it in the next 12 months or so and would I consider a Fairphone, yes I would consider one but in all honesty I’ll end up with a Samsung unless I get another iPhone SE as they are more affordable as I’ve never spent £650 on a phone in my life.
I am considering a Fairphone as my next phone, maybe like 3-5 years in the future. As much as I'd like the headphone jack I feel like I've been pushed to get wireless headphones, it feels too late but nice to have. I bet Fairphone did it to promote their Fairbuds XL. Outside of that, some of us have older speakers/sound systems that use still use 3.5mm. I feel Bluetooth is a big battery drain.

Great video! I despise planned obsolescence in all technology, and we are seeing it creep into everything now even your car. A car has what, 7 years a best? you should be able to use your device for the most part for the life of the hardware whether it be physical life or the technology has moved to a point where your hardware can no longer manage the technology e.g. modern Internet on an i486 . But this is not the case today, we are in a world where the manufacturer tells you to go and buy a new model just because they have decided to drop support. I will single out Apple here because they are one of the worst. but they all do it . remember this is a company that when they shipped a faulty camera on there iphone, their response to complaints was "your using it wrong !"
Same for me!! 486er or even 386 my first PC... And I loved building my own, still remember the day my raid controller died... The good old times. I hate the idea of making things break to sell more. I hope that there's a special place in hell for those who brought up this idea 😜
🤣🤣🤣 I felt bad for a minute 🙈 Good for you!!! 🎉 I actually think any refurbished or used phone is a great first choice. Just any step towards less waste and exploitation
@@UndineAlmani Still using it, still very happy. I'm a tech enthusiast, so this is not about the environment for me. And not really for the fairness. It's the idea. I really feel I own it. I take it apart just because I can. I install 3rd-party software. Because I can. This is how every device should be. It's not easy for me to stick with phones. But this time... I went back to my iPhone for a week and absolutley hated it. Apple completely lost me. I still want to like them, but I just can't anymore. Rainbowcolors don't make a company good. I would like them more if they'd shut up about the environment and social issues. "Big corpo has feelings" - yeah sure.
If the Fairphone was available for North America, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Completely agree with your arguments and am especially happy you mentioned it's a phone, it's not for serious work of any kind.
There's a link where to buy it under one of my other Fairphone videos in the pinned comment. I'm not sure it's still up to date but that is from a DM Fairphone sent me when I asked it they sell it in the Americas.
@@UndineAlmani Thank you very much! I will look into it. EDIT: I did investigate the link (Murena) but they explicitly say it's not available in Canada (where I am). I'll keep on looking and find a way. Soon as I can, I'm switching.
Generally dedicated solutions can provide higher quality. Having a color accurate display would be nice pairing to review content taken with your camera.
I have that. I actually went away from my Eizo because I needed a laptop anyway and then I wanted the most minimal solution,... But I feel like it's ruining my editing process at this point and giving me headaches 🤔
I can't speak for editing because I don't do much creative work but, for development work, I have seen success with using a projector in lower light on a white wall. It's compact, I can put it away easily, and I can use it anywhere.
My opinion is that portability is always better. I don't plan to own a monitor at this time, possibly forever. Digital detox is far easier when you don't depend on an external monitor.
I bought a used Pixel 3a instead of the Fairphone 3 because it was just more affordable at the time and I had barely anything left over to buy a new phone in the first place. If given the chance, I'd probably have gotten a Fairphone 3 for the repairability and the flashability. The 3a isn't repairable at all (hot glue yay) but at least it's flashable. LineageOS 21 is a life saver.
Lineage is so cool! I hope it stays well maintained. I wanted the Fairphone from FP1 but could never afford one. I saved up for it for quite a while, because I just didn't think I deserved this product before something else, it felt lavish... But I'm so glad I got one cause it's the best phone I ever had. Zero regrets. And I also think that every other phone can be sustainable too in a way. If used for a long time, resold, disposed of properly, repaired when needed and possibly etc. 👍🏼
@@UndineAlmani Lineage itself will keep going despite the former titans fading out slowly. ParanoidAndroid got poached by Oppo, OmniRom barely supports any devices anymore, AOKP shut down, etc. They seem to have pivoted from adding a lot of new features more towards providing a relatively stable base though from what I can tell. I definitely miss the days of ROMs coming out with new and innovative features. Although some Google actually quietly nicked and put into mainline Android.... Others, for some reason, not. I still use long press to skip on the volume rockers or the volume reorientation. The PIE-Menu though, where has that gone? Android gesture navigation is utter shite... I still use a navbar instead, but I'd rather be using PIE. Anyway, Lineage will probably be the last one standing given its size, although which and how many devices will be maintained, that's a different story. There haven't been any nightlies for the 3a since February now, so I'm kind of worried I'm at the end of the line for my phone and Lineage.
I'm still using a pixel 5. I'm just happy there is official repair parts available. In my opinion the glueing it together isn't that big of a deal but turning a screw requires a lot less finesse and comes with less pucker factor. The main disappointment with the pixel 5 I have is the USB port is soldered to the main board. We'll see how long it can last. My storage is starting to fill up. It's time to transfer some stuff to the computer.
@@UndineAlmani It’s good, in that it feels true, how much it pans out in reality I don’t know. That was just in regards to why (some) people just constantly buy the cheaper option that requires more frequent replacement.
Come on, I love using a device for a long time, and I love good cameras, but let's be fair, if you go to a 4 or 7 day festival, you are NOT a professional use so you make no money, would you carry a 3000 Euro A6700 with lens and care about it while trying to have fun, or an iPhone that you put in your pocket and takes pictures very close to an A6700? Or how about when you are hiking on a mountain, riding a bike? do you carry an APSC camera instead of a phone? Yes I do consider a fair phone for my next phone, but let's not pretend there is no reason to have a good camera in a phone, then a dedicated camera, for a non-pro users.
Oh noes 😆 😆 😆 I read a really stupid comment before this one where somebody was basically using poor people as a strawman and I hate that kinda thing... But now it's weeks later and I actually calmed down so I better not watch it again lol... I already see some people freak out cause they can't watch the whole thing and wait for the moderate points to be made, but I also feel like ok fuck them... 😅😅😅
If it's available in the US and after I run my current phone down, I'll consider it. Also I don't understand the "poor people can't afford it so I won't get it" or "It's not good enough" argument at all. It undermines how capitalism is supposed to drive technological progress. People like a product and buy it, so the company has more money to invest to provide cheaper and/or better goods. Like it's not even *good* consumerist thinking
💯 and it's also so weird how we have these top tier claims only towards tech items... But most people can't even tell the difference and they're not doing the same stuff with their car or clothes or appliances I think. That essentially only works so well because it's built on the backs of actual poor folks, otherwise most people wouldn't be able to afford an iPhone. Btw. FP is available in the US, they sent me this link to share: murena.com/america/shop/smartphones/brand-new/murena-fairphone-4/
@@UndineAlmani Good point. I usually think of time = money in buying things. I find that the investment tends to scale better with things I like. And thank you for sharing the link! I don't necessarily need a new phone but I don't mind being a consumerist sometimes, for a good cause if nothing else lol
Companies keep "teaching" us that if we don't have the latest and greatest, we are not "cool" anymore, and people get extremely biased towards phones being reviewed and compared against each other. There are people who actually need/want the best phones because they actually need it (they all are tech literate and know how to get around limitations of the phones), but those are probably around 1% of people who buy them. I personally have never bought a phone that was more than 300$ (some of which are Xiaomi's), even though I could afford them. I chose not to, but all the phones that I bought still work to this day: I still use one, one I fixed, installed new Android and gave to my dad (his phone had Android 5, but it still worked. Only reason he wants a new one because 5 is "obsolete" and some apps refuse to work) and the last one I have as a backup in case the current one breaks. They all still make good enough photos and work well enough that I won't mind using them at all. All of them I have been repairing if something broke. It honestly keeps surprising me how dumb some people are with their financial decisions.
If phones didn't come with contracts "for free", I think Apple wouldn't sell half as many phones as they do. They are kinda forced down our throats. Very few people actually care about new phones or new features. But when they are presented with a choice every 1-2 years, then of course they want "the best". Those people will also tell you, that the iPhone 15 Pro Max also only cost $299.
THIS. It was the same for me, also had one Xiaomi hand me down. The fairphone was the first real smart phone I bought for myself and not used. I partially did it also to show it on the channel and debunk some myths about it, but I would've also bought it if I didn't make the videos. Anyway, every reused, repaired or up/recycled piece of equipment is a good one!
@@UndineAlmani I haven't bought any fair products, but I make damn sure the "not fair" ones that I buy will last me a long time and I intend taking care of them. Buying used helps, too.
@dotaallstars8081 my husband has been using it for over a year and he says it's okay. I don't like the standard keyboard but you can get some Google one if you want. It was definitely easy to install because FP is kinda made for that.
Honestly this video make me angry and can be summerize as wannabe boomer yells at cloud. Yeah argument about poor people cannot afford it is stupid But saying get a job and eat less avocado toasts? Seriously? Lole seriously? For not wanting to buy a gimmick phone? Argument: A) Phone should just be phone. Well maybe I want something more as I dont want to drag with me everyday a dslr, a big notebook and whatever else my phone is replacing. B) Fairphone is fair. That is just a gimmick, the worker and resource exploitation wont be solved by a consumer action but by a political one. Especially as EVERYTHING else is similarly exploitative (also the camera and laptop that you want everybody to drag with them are also definitely not fair). C) Why we need a good camera in the phone when its not amazing. Well because we dont drag a dslr with us constantly and most people want a good enough pictures offered by a good phones. No offense but this video feels like a know-it-all run of the mill "alt" westerner.
WTF? Did you watch the whole video actually? Cause it doesn't seem like you get ANY of my points. And at none of them I said get a DSLR. What the actual fuck.

I'll check that out later! Physical limits like the Abbe limit/aperture/material properties are hard limits and the reason why even normal fast lenses for cameras are so expensive. I've designed optics for a living, so it always baffles me when people argue an average phone cam could be as good as an average camera with a lens... 🙈
Hauptsache nicht ständig was neues...
my Fairphone 4 can't do voicemail (I have to call in to listen to messages), can't connect to my car's bluetooth (WTF?), and can't do touchless pay. Adding insult to injury, Murena Fairphone has the worst customer service I've ever had. There's no phone number to call them, forcing us to send an email, then wait a week for them to reply (if they reply at all).
Please don't spam on my videos. I've answered your other comment, which is an exact copy of this one and has not much to do with the video. If you have an issue with your model, go and talk to FP. I had none of these problems with my FP4, and the customer service in Europe is just fine. So maybe that's a problem with your service provider, but I can't talk about that, cause it's literally an ocean apart
@@UndineAlmani I don’t think you know what SPAM is. You’re interested in reaching potential Fairphone users, and so am I. I have in fact posted that same comment on every Fairphone review I could find on TH-cam. Knowledge is power.
And I don't think you know what knowledge is. Your single case of "uh, maybe a hardware issue, maybe I'm unable to connect my Bluetooth, Murena is bad, let's bash Fairphone m, bro" that you didn't further investigate isn't "knowledge".
@@UndineAlmani the words you've quoted above are what Murena Fairphone has written to me in an email. And none of the problems are a "maybe". I CAN"T use visual voicemail. I CAN"T use the phone with my car's bluetooth, and I CAN"T use the phone with Google Pay -- no "maybe's about it". I investigate these issues daily while waiting for Fairphone to take their sweet time to email me back. And for a non-native english speaker, you've done a good job of absorbing american english colloquialisms, but you really shouldn't try being insulting with them. You really shouldn't try being insulting at all.
That really doesn't matter. You can't bash a company as a whole and act like you're giving some warning or PSA to those poor users out there under my video, in my comments section, which is not the place for that. Go to your vendor or to FP forums for that. Not cool. You left a pissy comment, I said okay, that sucks, and btw they sell FPs on shitty little phone stores here too. The one I looked at had such bad service, the guy was standing outside smoking, and came inside after leaving me waiting for 5 min, then basically told me FP is stupid and I am stupid and I should buy some 1000 bucks flagship Samsung. So? Why would I bring that to a video about a Samsung phone? Has nothing to do with that. Also, again, maybe just a Monday model. We are done at this point anyway, because I can't help you with your complaint or your people issues. I won't bash FP with you based on your single experience (I will, like I did with the camera software a while back). But overall, that's stupid. And I don't give a shit if you don't like my language. Especially since I answered you without any swearing here and under the other comment. I wasted my time that I could've spent doing something for my daughter, so that you can tell me how to speak? No thanks. Be pissed at your phone. I'd be pissed too. But that has nothing to do with me, and you brought your issues to the wrong place. If you want them heard, bring it up to the FP forums. I dealt with FP support too, they are slow. So is my car dealer. (Much slower actually.) I ordered the spare parts I needed on ebay and the FP site directly, and you can't do that with any other phone as easily as with FP. I have gotten much more positive feedback than negative on the phones over the years, the only thing people complain about frequently is the missing mic jack and audio quality. But your case is pretty unique, so there must be something wrong with your model, which is a warranty issue. Do you bring other warranty issues to some random comments section too? (That was a rhetorical question, I really don't care.)

I really wanted to buy Fairphone, but it doesn't have 3.5 jack, therefore screw them. I understand that they want to sell their fairbuds, but for me it's a killer. I can accept a higher price for lower overall performance, but I will not accept higher price for the low performing shit that doesn't hqve basic features. Sorry
Yes, I get that... I don't want their earbuds either but I don't need a mic jack, so for me it is okay. But I think it was a shit move. I am not sure they did it because if the earbuds though, I think it actually reduces the cost of the phone...
@@UndineAlmaniRealistically, I don't see any reason, other then trying to forcefully market their earbuds. The phone itself is already overpriced enough, so potential buyer will not notice even couple of euros difference. These 3.5 jacks are so cheap, that cutting cost reason sounds like "we made microusb instead of usb-c because it was cheaper". They really think, that people are naive and don't understand that it's a 50cents difference at max. I'm very frustrated because of that, sorry, it was the go to phone for me to buy cause of political reasons, but they are not trustworthy. Talking about environment then forcing people to buy more headphones with batteries in them. Not to mention, that bluetooth itself cuts the quality of the sound
Btw, other companies that stopped including 3.5 after apples shitmove are not pretending to be enviromentally freandly, which is exactly opposite stance from fairphone
@oleksandrkudryavtsev5736 I don't think that's the same. No question, the move is weird..but they're still more sustainable. Or are they saying it's more sustainable not to have it now??
Most phones can play wired audio through USB-C. You don't need to buy their earbuds, you should be able to use any third-party headphones with USB-C or a USB-C adapter
There is a difference between repairable and self repairable. Fairphone is a small company trying to build an image around self repair. They use trickery regarding longevity with industry processors nobody else uses, so their small team needs ages for security patches. A no go. And parts (beside the battery that lasts normally years) that nobody want to change, as a camera. Would be interesting that like at Framework the mobo is is replaceable but no avail. So they effectively do nothing special here beside advertising a false good conscience. A battery change for my already four year old iPhone next year will cost a mere 99 Euros including the work - which is then more than enough for the rest of it’s lifetime which is as long as that of a Fairphone…. The „futureproof“ argument is used by people which lie to themselves spending not enough money at the start… And at last you have to get a key from fairphone to be able to unlock the boot loader !?!
@@UndineAlmani I wish you luck. Especially with the fake longevity of the FF devices… I think your well meant wishful thinking overestimates the influence such companies will have outside the conscience pampering bubble.
@HjalmarHammarsson Oh, my bubble... That must be it 🤣 I don't know what your hands on experience with FP is, I assume exactly zero. But we had to do one repair, which was no issue at all. FP3 lived longer so far than any other phone I had, because 100% of those cheap ones were just filled with updates and bloatware after a year and hard to install a custom ROM on on top. The FP is really a straight forward device in all aspects, and I have no issues to get parts in Europe whatsoever. The support is slow, that's the only issue I've ever had. I think it's fine to criticize them for some things, but these obviously "read somewhere and half made up" reddit statements, lol, that's silly
@@UndineAlmani Don't assume. Have had a FP3 and a 4er for years. One from my company. As I can (technical informatics, u know?) I rooted them with a diversitiy of ROMs. Because the original system was not certifiable. So no MDM and company approved software on it possible. I do not know what you do with your phones, I have no repairs needed with any of my phones. Even the iPhone 4 from 2011/12(?) has it's first battery. An when you open the FP you see that the board is unique and fixed, the processor you can research and find. I've done IoT (and even before it was called so) for some decades so I know the business.
OKAY! I'LL BUY A FAIRPHONE NOW! PLEASE STOP!! 😭😭
edit: I actually did btw...
🤣🤣🤣 I felt bad for a minute 🙈 Good for you!!! 🎉 I actually think any refurbished or used phone is a great first choice. Just any step towards less waste and exploitation
that's fair from you to point out the old and unused phone in the drawer actually is the most fair phone
"Fuck your camera!" Holy shit, I love this woman.
@meowcula oh no 😔 I thought it was their North America partner. I'll ask them again!
Should I get a real monitor?
Generally dedicated solutions can provide higher quality. Having a color accurate display would be nice pairing to review content taken with your camera.
It's definitely worth it
I have that.
"phone-based solutions are not real solutions" love it
I don't know why but i'm reminded of Sam Vimes' "Boots" theory of socioeconomic unfairness.
Hmmm... I will look that up now I guess 😅
I wouldn't make you angry Undine, you look scary
@@bombombalu I've actually haven't thought about that. Where I live, contracts aren't a thing.
I would buy it, but can’t install grapheneOS on it
How about Lineage?
@@UndineAlmani have you tested? That would be very compelling
@dotaallstars8081 my husband has been using it for over a year and he says it's okay. I don't like the standard keyboard but you can get some Google one if you want. It was definitely easy to install because FP is kinda made for that.
@@UndineAlmani please do a review on it. Would love to hear your thoughts on it!/
The future of technology is ethics.
Honestly this video make me angry and can be summerize as wannabe boomer yells at cloud. Yeah argument about poor people cannot afford it is stupid
But saying get a job and eat less avocado toasts? Seriously? Lole seriously? For not wanting to buy a gimmick phone?
Argument:
A) Phone should just be phone.

More bad news: Fairphone is not compatible with Google Chrome

though those arguments about physical sizes and limitations sound logical
Eine Alternative ist Shiftphone aus Deutschland ;-)

The „futureproof“ argument is used by people which lie to themselves spending not enough money at the start…
And at last you have to get a key from fairphone to be able to unlock the boot loader !?!
I'm kinda in it for the fairness aspect primarily. Secondly the replaceable battery and camera actually
